Under Etymology, it says: 'Related to Dutch gang (“hallway”) and Norwegian gang (“hallway”).' I speak Norwegian (not Dutch), but it seems more likely to be related to another meaning of the Norwegian word gang: the act of walking. In fact, the Norwegian word for walkway is "gangvei". Experimenting a bit with Google Translator, it also seems that the word gang in Dutch also can mean things to do with walking or passing, such as "aan de gang" (in progress) and "in volle gang" (in full swing).
