- A taxonomic genus within the family Pinaceae – certain coniferous trees, the true firs, characterized by the erect cones and the flattened, needlelike, sessile leaves not jointed at the base. They are natives of north temperate regions and are related to the cedars (Cedrus) and hemlocks (Tsuga).
