Particularly: “Not given etymology by STEDT (chî "put up barrier, impede, obstruct; cover, clothe"), and not mentioned by Luce 1981. Superficial resemblance to the modern forms of Chinese (zhǐ, “to stop, halt”) are not supported by the Old Chinese reconstructions, such as (OC *kjɯʔ).

Whether the "immediately" and "mist" senses are related is unclear, though MED groups them together.”
