According to Lin Yiguang (1920), this character is an ancient form of (OC *keːŋ, *keːŋs). Its bronze inscription form is a pictogram (象形) of vertical threads passing through the top of a loom and has the meaning "to abide by, to comply with". Unrelated to .

Shuowen erroneously analyzes this character as streams of water across land due to its superficial appearence ( in fact represents flowing water).
