===Etymology 2===
{{ko-etym-native|ss|돈|twontwŏn}}

The etymology beyond Middle Korean is unknown. Seo Jae-geuk proposes that this is the {{m|oko|隱|tr=*-n}} nominalization of an ancestor of modern {{ko-l|되다|to measure in containers}}; the ''{{w|Jilin leishi}}'' gives the ancestral form of the Middle Korean unit of volume {{okm-inline|되|twoy}}, from which this verb derives, as */to/. Thus {{lang|ko|돈}} would originally have meant "that which is measured, counted".<ref name="Hangukhangnonjip" />
