Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Coordinators/2019/2

Overview

edit

The project coordinators are responsible for maintaining the procedural and administrative aspects of the project. They are the designated points of contact for procedural issues and are responsible for ensuring the project as a whole is properly informed of them.

Here are some examples of coordinator duties: the coordinators manage the proposal and creation of new task forces; ensure project announcements and task lists are kept up-to-date; initiate drafting of guidelines needed by the project; organize the category system; oversee the recruitment of new members, including the use of project notices and other advertising methods; create and maintain any collaborative projects; maintain the project page and the various guidelines on it in a clean and easy-to-use state; monitor technical policies and ensure project templates satisfy them; and assist in organizing and promoting any Backlog Elimination Drives and Blitzes.

They are also expected to generally assist project members with any questions or concerns.

The coordinator positions do not confer any executive power.

Positions

edit
  • Lead Coordinator (one open position): will have overall responsibility for procedural and administrative matters within the project.
  • Coordinator (2–4 open positions): will assist the Lead Coordinator by focusing on specific areas within the project that require special attention. These areas will be selected based on need and interest among the coordinators.

Election process

edit
  • The nomination process ran for two weeks from June 01, 00:01 UTC until June 15, 23:59 UTC.
  • The election process ran for two weeks from June 16, 00:01 UTC until June 30, 23:59 UTC.
  • Any member of the project may nominate themselves for either position by creating a new section under Nominations below and copying the sample form below. Nominees only interested in one position should indicate this when adding their names. Candidates need not make extensive statements if they do not wish to do so.
  • The elections will be conducted using simple approval voting. Any member of the project may support a nominee for either position. If the nominee is running for both positions and you wish to support them for only one, please make a note to that effect as part of your vote.
  • Both project members and interested outside parties are encouraged to ask questions of the nominees or to make general comments.

Miniapolis

Miniapolis (talk · contribs) • Interested in coordinator position only.

Well, somebody has to get the show on the road. I've been doing this a while and am fine with continuing as lead coordinator, dropping back to coordinator or just copyediting (which I love the most, but someone has to keep the GOCE going :-)). We always need help with the administrative side of the Guild; I've been fortunate to have plenty from Baffle, Jonesey, Reidgreg and Tdslk, making everyone's job easier. I look forward to another six months of fun helping to improve the encyclopedia.

Twofingered Typist

Twofingered Typist (talk · contribs) • Interested in Coordinator position only.

I have been editing since December 2014, largely articles from the GOCE Requests list. I have also been actively involved in nearly all of the Copy Edit Blitzes and Backlog Elimination Drives since then, as well as doing a little work on WikiProject Canada articles. I would like to offer myself as a candidate with the aim of doing my part in keeping the Guild's work moving forward and with whatever else I can do to help out. Thank you.

Reidgreg

edit

Reidgreg (talk · contribs) • Interested in either position.

I've been a bit busy with article promotions at the beginning and end of this term, and am grateful to the coordinator team for picking up the slack. I should be alright for the second half of the year and would like to again serve as coordinator or take a turn as lead – unless someone else wants the big chair. Thanks.

Comments and questions

  1. Self-comment: I've been somewhat limited in my contributions as a dial-up user but recently upgraded to fibre optic, which represents a 25-year jump in technology and perhaps 10,000 times improvement in bandwidth. My editing patterns may shift somewhat as I'll be doing more online editing and research, and using more tools. I expect to shift away from copy editing somewhat (which I tended to do offline) but hope to be more present on talk pages and with maintenance tasks. – Reidgreg (talk) 12:40, 20 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
In case you miss it, here's that wonderful sound again. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 03:51, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome. There's an instrumental song I like that samples modem sounds and the sound of typing alongside a string quartet. Google "Fax me" "Yoko Kanno". – Reidgreg (talk) 13:41, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Jonesey95

edit

Jonesey95 (talk · contribs) • Interested in Coordinator position only.

Here I am again, happy to serve if you'll have me. I have been a Coordinator for the last six years, and the Lead Coordinator for half of that. A little bit of drama is unavoidable here on Wikipedia, but I like to think that our Coordinators over the last few years have done their best to keep the GOCE a professional working environment, and we have an impressive backlog reduction to show for it. I'm happy to continue that work.
I have a long wikibreak coming up over the next two months (road trip!), so I won't be around for the voting, or for the first month of the upcoming term (I'm going to try to sneak a bit of internet access to keep my six-year drive/blitz participation streak alive, though). If you want to leave me off the Coordinator list for six months, I absolutely will not take offense, and I will continue to participate when I return.

Tdslk

Tdslk (talk · contribs) • Interested in Coordinator position only.

I've been around the Guild since 2010, and a coordinator since 2016. My personal schedule for the second half of the year looks relatively light, so I'm happy to keep lending a hand to make things run smoothly in my favorite corner of Wikipedia.

Baffle gab1978 (talk · contribs) • Interested in Coordinator position only.

Thanks to my fellow coordinators for their help and support over the past years. I'm happy to wear the juice serve for another term; I have no wish to be lead though. As well as copy-editing, My main focus at the GOCE is keeping the ever-busy Requests page tidy, archiving requests, checking their suitability, discussing where necessary, and performing other small tasks in Guildspace such as setting up Drive and Blitz pages. I consider communication to be important so I like to get newsletters sent out quarterly. Due to current events I'm not editing the encyclopaedia, as of my timestamp. 1. Many thanks for all your help. FWIW, I'm trying to distinguish between continuing to improve the encyclopedia and detaching from a bureaucracy which may have lost its way; time will tell how this plays out. Miniapolis 00:52, 16 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  1. I hadn't been aware of the latest controversy before following your link. It has been an interesting read over the past few evenings. Are you planning to return to editing if there is an acceptable resolution to the issue? If so, I would absolutely support you as a coordinator, but if not then I don't think we should have a permanently inactive coordinator. Tdslk (talk) 06:11, 20 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for asking and reading, Tdslk. I appreciate and understand your comments. I've now returned to mainspace editing—protest without power is not effective—but I would have continued my behind-the-scenes GOCE work. I shall make my protest on my talk page and its edit notice. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 03:51, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Whew! I was afraid of losing you and Jonesey at the new term. I'm hoping the next Signpost will have a good summary of where things are going. – Reidgreg (talk) 13:41, 23 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it has a good, balanced update. We each have to decide how we're going to deal with this. Miniapolis 23:43, 30 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Results

edit

Reidgreg was chosen as lead coordinator, to be assisted by coordinators Baffle gab1978, Miniapolis, Tdslk, and first-time coordinator Twofingered Typist. Long-time stalwart Jonesey95 received the Guild's full support to take a respite after serving for twelve consecutive terms, most often as lead.

Thanks to all who participated in the election! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Reidgreg (talkcontribs) 12:14, 2 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
