Copy-editing request
editHi, I noticed you are a pretty experienced copy-editor. I wondered if you could take a look at the Gregory House article, various users have been contributing to the page. It has been listed for FA candidatecy multiple times but has not been promoted yet, I think it would be nice if the article could be copy-edited before I list it for a peer review. It would be appreciated if you would take a look, but don't feel obligated to do anything. --Music26/11 15:52, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

Hiya Tanankyo
editMy current project on Wikipedia is increasing the quality and quantity of copyediting. We have people who are good with AP Stylebook and Websters, but we have very few people participating in article reviews who have many years of professional copyediting experience, and I'm wondering ... why? Some copyeditors have switched jobs, or are retired, or aren't sufficiently challenged, and wouldn't mind doing a little volunteer copyediting, and it would be nice to have more professionals in the mix. If you're interested in doing more, great; if not, this is just an informal survey, and I'd appreciate your ideas on what would attract more professional copyeditors.
Dan
- Hey, Dan. Sorry about the length of time it has taken me to reply to your question, but I'll see if I can't shed some light. Personally, I decided to get more active on Wikipedia because the glut of grammar and punctuation errors was starting to grate on the English Major inside me. I had been making a lot of unsigned edits, and a friend finally convinced me that having a user profile would get my edits taken more seriously. As far as attracting more professionals to the mix, there's not a lot to be done. Anyone who is interested in making Wikipedia a better resource will, ideally, jump onboard and heave-to, though, to be honest, the learning curve involved in familiarizing oneself with the behind-the-scenes action here is, in a word, daunting. Perhaps you'd find some more response if the need for decent editors was made plain, or if there was some kind of test required of a person who is interested. The test would serve to show that Wikipedia is serious about the quality of editing it expects. I'm not sure if this helps at all, but I wish you the best in your quest to find good copyeditors.
- "That Wikipedia is serious about the quality": I didn't follow, tell me more. Let's assume that the learning curve is small; people who already follow some kind of style guide in their day job are very much needed on Wikipedia, so I (and others) can always go behind your work looking to see if there is some guideline or policy point that you didn't know about. When you say you want Wikipedia to be serious, do you mean you want to be operating in a community of people that perform at a certain standard, rather than just editing random articles? There are over 2.5M articles, we can't fix all of them, but we can focus on the >2K Featured Articles, or the Good Articles, or the 30K articles on the DVD. - Dan Dank55 (send/receive) 00:56, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
- I guess what I'm getting at with the remark about being serious about quality is that right now, anyone online can make a change to an article. This, I know, leads to a lot of vandalism, and it can also be off-putting to copy-editors who take pride in their work; if necessary edits made in good faith to better an article can be reversed by a prankster, a zealous writer, or anyone else for any reason, the editor may think twice about donating their time. At least making sure contributors are required to have an account and be signed in before being able to make revisions would go a long way to show that Wikipedia is trying to make sure users are responsible, or at least trackable by something other than their IP address. tanankyo (talk) 00:38, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
- First, the Wikipedia DVD Version 0.7 is coming out soon with around 30000 articles, and of course, the articles can't be vandalized once they're selected for the DVD, so if you want to copyedit articles for next year's DVD, stick around. Second, we never delete anything, so even if you believe the quality of a page degrades after you work on it, you can always show people the version that you copyedited by pulling up the history. Third, banning anonymous editing is not going to happen, because of the arguments at WP:PEREN#Prohibit anonymous users from editing, and because we're quite familiar with the results. It's been done many times on Wikipedia (every time we "semi-protect" articles) and on other sites. It's hard to argue with success, and we're the top content site in the world ... there are 4 sites with more hits, such as google.com, but people are usually using them to get to someplace else. - Dan Dank55 (send/receive) 02:22, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for the link to the page about anonymous editing; I had no idea this is as old an idea as it appears to be with Wikipedia, and it's gratifying to know that the system has been tried and seen to fail. I apologize for beating the dead horse, as it were, but I can only plead ignorance. That said, and to get back to the original push of our conversation (the attraction of quality copy-editors), I think attracting editors isn't the problem, but rather keeping them around. This article I just read on MSN will hopefully address the problem: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28037910/from/ET/. As I mentioned before, the learning curve, not for the Wiki Formatting Manual, but for the nuts-and-bolts of working with an article, is daunting. A lot of people, myself included, who know English grammar and usage well, may not be able to easily wrap their heads around the myriad coding and tagging requirements to making an article appear correctly on Wikipedia. Making the editing process more user friendly will go a long way toward retaining individuals who are skilled at editing but don't want to spend an inordinate amount of time familiarizing themselves with the minutiae of html coding. tanankyo (talk) 03:02, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, that's a very reasonable objection. I'm hoping we can find a way to make it easier for people to copyedit the articles that are being reviewed for Featured Article or Good Article status without too much sweat. - Dan Dank55 (send/receive) 03:13, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
- So do I, though with my luck, I'll just be getting used to reading around the coding when the changes go into effect. Ah, well; isn't progress great! Thanks again for the insights, and if I can ever be of any help, please let me know. tanankyo (talk) 03:31, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

editHi Tanankyo, I have an article that needs copyediting as the main reason that is preventing it from becoming Featured Article, and I was recommended from \ / that you are a fantastic copyeditor. The article could certainly use some help and it would be great if you can go through it. An accompanying peer review is ongoing for the article; please feel free to comment on how the article can be improved. - Cheers, Mailer Diablo 07:22, 21 December 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for copyediting the article! That was nice work. One thing, was the three dashes at the start of the article meant to do something? Other editors are asking about it. I intend to propose a rewritten lead on the peer review itself, so that it can be reviewed again by everyone before putting it up. Merry Christmas! - Cheers, Mailer Diablo 15:28, 24 December 2008 (UTC)
- You are very welcome! In regards to the three dashes at the top of the article, if I put those there, I apologize; I didn't mean to. I know I was having a wee issue with copy/pasting a dash to remedy an incorrectly handled one in the article, so it may have been me. Good luck with the rewritten lead! Happy Holidays, tanankyo (talk) 20:26, 24 December 2008 (UTC)
- The lead has been further shortened. If you don't mind, could you look it through once and see if it's grammatically correct. Please feel free to leave any specific feedback on the Peer Review if you'd like. Thank you once again, Mailer Diablo 15:24, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
- I've cut the sentence into two. Does it sound better now? - Best regards, Mailer Diablo 03:02, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Dear WikiProject Video games member,
You are receiving this message because you have either Category:WikiProject Video games members or {{User WPVG}} somewhere in your userspace and you have edited Wikipedia in recent months.
The Video games project has created a member list to provide a clearer picture of its active membership.
All members have currently been placed in the "Inactive" section by default. Please remove your username from the "Inactive" listing and place it under the "Active" listing if you plan on regularly:
- Editing video game-related pages in the Article namespace
- Participating in video game-related discussions in the Project namespace (WT:VG, WP:AfD, WP:GAN, etc.)
Ideally, members are encouraged to do both, but either one meets our criteria of inclusion. Members still listed inactive at the beginning of November 2009 may be removed. You may re-add yourself to the active list at any time. Thank you for your help, and we look forward to working with you.

Grab some glory, and a barnstar
editHi, I'd like to invite you to participate in the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. In May, about 30 editors helped remove the {{copyedit}} tag from 1175 articles. The backlog is still over 7500 articles, and extends back to the beginning of 2008! We really need your help to reduce it. Copyediting just a couple articles can qualify you for a barnstar. Serious copyeditors can win prestigious and exclusive rewards. See the event page for more information. And thanks for your consideration. ɳorɑfʈ Talk! 15:23, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive Wrap-up
editGreetings from the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated in the drive! Over 100 editors—including Jimbo Wales—signed up this time (nearly triple the participants of the May drive). This benefited the Guild as well as the articles in need of copy editing. You can see from the comparison graphs that we increased the number of completed copyedits substantially. Unfortunately, we were not able to meet our goal of completely wiping out 2008 from the queue. We also were not able to reduce the backlog to less than 6,000 articles. We suspect people were busy with real life summertime things, at least in the northern hemisphere! We were able to remove the months of January, February, March, April, and May from the backlog, and we almost wiped out the month of June. We reduced the backlog by 1,289 articles (17%), so all in all it was a very successful drive, and we will be holding another event soon. We'll come up with some new ideas to try to keep things fresh and interesting. Keep up the good work, everybody!

Applause for your Montana State Prison article
editHaving looked at the article mentioned, I am impressed! I'd begun to think I was among the very few who know or care much about that subject. What is your interest? Mine revolves around a book I'm composing, where the prison plays a minor but important role. Also as a Deer Lodge boy, I was very close to the prison riot events chronicled so ably in Mr. Giles book as my dad was the police chief. I remember sitting over in the 4-B's watching the mattress burning and (Dick?) Kendall's NG troops. My brother knew Jim Rothe pretty well. Last summer while doing research in the library I chanced across the 1908 SS Post article on the fight in Conley's office. Anyway, if you're so inclined please contact me at my talk site. Regards - John Wilson Jwilsonjwilson (talk) 08:24, 12 September 2010 (UTC)
- Glad to see your response on my page. Thought perhaps you had stopped looking at this. You know, User talk:Mike Cline (and others I imagine) is working on increasing activity in the Montana-related articles on Wikipedia, which was rather moribund til recently I gather. Thanks to his instigation I'm composing Montana Cattle Industry article. I don't doubt that there are many worthy (Montana-related) subjects currently unaddressed here, at least some of which are currently 'stubs' as they call them. Further participation by an author of your ability would be most welcome should you have some interest. Personally, I'd like to see (and hope to produce and/or edit) more on Deer Lodge and the valley, including Anaconda and Butte at least. November copy edit drive
editGreetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!
The Wikipedia Guild of Copy-Editors invites you to participate in the November 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive, a month-long effort to reduce the backlog of articles that require copy-editing. The drive will begin on 1 November at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on 30 November at 23:59 (UTC). The goal for this drive is to reduce the backlog by 10% (approximately 500 articles). We hope to focus our efforts on the oldest three months (January, February, and March 2009) and the newest three months (September, October, and November 2010) of articles in the queue. Sign-up has already begun at the November drive page, and will be open throughout the drive. If you have any questions or concerns, please leave a message on the drive's talk page. Before you begin copy-editing, please carefully read the instructions on the main drive page. Please make sure that you know how to copy-edit, and be familiar with the Wikipedia Manual of Style. Awards and barnstars A range of barnstars will be awarded to active participants, some of which are exclusive to GOCE drives. More information on awards can be found on the main drive page. Thank you; we look forward to meeting you on the drive! |
Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!
We have reached the midway point in our backlog elimination drive, so here is an update. Participation report — The November drive has 53 participants at this point. We had 77 participants in the September drive. In July, 95 people signed up for the drive, and in May we had 36. If you are not participating, it is not too late to join! Progress report — The drive is quite successful so far, as we have already almost reached our target of a 10% reduction in the number of articles in the backlog. We are doing very well at keeping our Requests page clear, as those articles count double for word count for this drive. Please keep in mind the possibility of removing other tags when you are finished with an article. If the article no longer needs {{cleanup}}, {{wikify}}, or other similar maintenance tags, please remove them, as this will make the tasks of other WikiProjects easier to complete. Thanks very much for participating in the Drive, and see you at the finish line!

Wikipedia Campus Ambassadors wanted in Bozeman, Montana
editHi! I'm leaving you this message because you're listed as a member of WikiProject Montana. The Wikipedia Ambassador Program is currently looking for Campus Ambassadors to help with Wikipedia assignments at Montana State University - Bozeman, which will be participating in the Public Policy Initiative for the Spring 2011 semester. The role of Campus Ambassadors will be to provide face-to-face training and support for students on Wikipedia-related skills (how to edit articles, how to add references, etc.). This includes doing in-class presentations, running workshops and labs, possibly holding office hours, and in general providing in-person mentorship for students.
Prior Wikipedia skills are not required for the role, as training will be provided for all Campus Ambassadors (although, of course, being an experienced editor is a plus).
I know Montana is a big state, but if you happen to live near Bozeman and you are interested in being a Wikipedia Campus Ambassador, or know someone else from Bozeman who might be, please email me or leave a message on my talk page.--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 21:37, 3 December 2010 (UTC)

edit Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 backlog elimination drive
Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! The drive is halfway over, so here are some mid-drive stats.
So far, 43 people have signed up for this drive. Of these, 25 have participated. If you signed up for the drive but haven't participated yet, it's not too late! Try to copy edit at least a few articles. Remember, if you have rollover words from the last drive, you will lose them if you do not participate in this drive. If you haven't signed up for the drive yet, you can sign up now.
We have eliminated two months from the backlog – January and February 2009. One of our goals is to eliminate as many months as possible from the 2009 backlog. Please help us reduce the size of this part of the backlog if you haven't already. Another goal is to reduce the entire backlog by 10%, or by 515 articles. Currently, we have eliminated 375 articles from the queue, so if each participant copy edits four more articles, we will reach that goal. Thank you for participating in the January 2011 drive. We anticipate it will be another big success! Your drive coordinators –S Masters (talk), Diannaa (Talk), The UtahraptorTalk to me, and Tea with toast (Talk) |

editGreetings from the Guild of Copy Editors
The latest GOCE backlog elimination drive is under way! It began on 1 July and so far 18 people have signed up to help us reduce the number of articles in need of copyediting. This drive will give a 50% bonus for articles edited from the GOCE requests page. Although we have cleared the backlog of 2009 articles there are still 3,935 articles needing copyediting and any help, no matter how small, would be appreciated. We are appealing to all GOCE members, and any other editors who wish to participate, to come and help us reduce the number of articles needing copyediting, as well as the backlog of requests. If you have not signed up yet, why not take a look at the current signatories and help us by adding your name and copyediting a few articles. Barnstars will be given to anyone who edits more than 4,000 words, with special awards for the top 5 in the categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words". |

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
