12th amendment

edit

I do not understand the phrase about electors cannot vote for president or VP if one of them is from the same state. Does that mean if that electors from texas could not vote for Bush because he is from texas? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dubo1234 (talkcontribs) 19:27, 5 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

No as far as I know - it means that electors cannot vote for President and Vice President from the same state that they are representing. "No elector may cast votes for Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates who both inhabit the same state as that elector (Habitation Clause). It is, however, possible for an elector to cast to vote for one candidate that is from the same state as that elector." --Dumarest (talk) 19:59, 6 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Log move

edit

This morning, on my look at 'mywatch', a whole lot of log moves. Below is the text of one:

"(Move log); 02:19 . . Cull Tremayne (Talk | contribs) moved Talk:African American to Talk:.ԋ. .а. .Ҩ. .Ҩ. .е. .ґ? (Niggers are pwnt by Grаwр’s mаssive сοсk. Also, go to..."

And several more with that same'nigger' material. What gives? Can this be a valid real log move?? --Dumarest (talk) 12:55, 6 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hey Dumarest, "Grawp" is a pagemove vandal here, and that was either him or a "wannabe". That move was vandalism and was probably reverted on site. If you want to know anymore let me know. --Coffee // talk // ark // 13:05, 6 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Harry Potter archive pages

edit

This seems to be an Admin question/problem. And maybe I should not have done all I did. For my user page, wanted a picture of self as Dumbledore - upload - hey, the upload page says there used to be an image with the same name, Dumbledore.jpg, that had been deleted, so I just went ahead. But when done, I noted that several pages were linked to that 'deleted' 'Dumbledore.jpg' image. So, I went to them, and 'fixed' them so that this unrelated image would not come up on a page where a now deleted image used to be. Fine, except that two of the pages are archives, and I gather I should not edit them - that is an Admin job if it is to be done. The pages are Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Harry Potter/Archives 6 and 8.

What I should have done, now too late, is not use that deleted image name for my uploaded image. Oh well, live and learn! --Dumarest (talk) 20:43, 27 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Don't worry about it! :) In this case, I'd say it would be safe to change the above yourself. Cheers, Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :) 20:48, 27 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
Just like MoP said, its not a problem for you to change those pages yourself. I wanted to add, however, that if you'd like to change the name of the image to avoid confusion, you can request that the image under its current name be deleted by adding {{db-author}} to the image page, and then uploading the image again under a different name. --NickContact/Contribs 20:51, 27 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

I goofed - making a second archive of this. It is garbage, and should be deleted, but I gather I cannot do that. --Dumarest (talk) 18:23, 28 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Janis Joplin talk page archive

edit

Check out the talk page for Janis Joplin. A recent change archived the page, but it seems to me that what was done was replacing a previous archive with a new one, rather that doing an archive-2. Can't be sure of this but could this be checked?? --Dumarest (talk) 11:27, 11 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hello Dumarest, here is the edit removing the content from the talk page: 1 and here is the one putting it into the archive: 2, you can find a list of all the archives of a talkpage at the top of each talkpage, hope this helps SpitfireTally-ho! 11:35, 11 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
If you click this link: here you can see on the right of your screen an example of what an archive box looks like, so you can recognize it next time, if I'm not making sense in anything I've said just ask. All the best SpitfireTally-ho!
(edit conflict; maybe my answer clarifies, so here goes...)
Looks OK to me. The old stuff is in Talk:Janis_Joplin/Archive_1, and there is a link to that at the top of the talk page.
LaVidaLoca (talk · contribs) removed the stuff from the talk page with this edit, and put it into the archive with this edit.
There was then a slight confusion, as Dumarest (talk · contribs) said 'Sorry, I can't find any such archive, so reverted.' - and put the stuff back, here.
LaVidaLoca (talk · contribs) then corrected the date in the archive link at the top of the talk page, and removed the archived material again, with this edit.
So - all appears to be in order.

(edit conflict)Sorry, I should have read your question, the user just added what they archived to the bottom of the existing archive, as you can see here: 1, they did not overwrite anything, all the best SpitfireTally-ho! 11:41, 11 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Mea culpa - I realized that the talk page had been there for a number of years, and the first item in the archived talk was dated 2007 - but I now see that the topics in that archived page are not in date order - later entries were put at the top not the bottom - and I see that earlier entries are there and that in fact the current archive seems to include all the material. --Dumarest (talk) 14:10, 11 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Still curious why the block. A guess - I recently changed my e-mail address and the old one was the one in my Wiki profile - so maybe my more recent posts, the e-mail being different from the listed, caused the block?. I have changed it to the new address. --Dumarest (talk) 11:25, 6 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Paul Revere

edit

Dear Dumarest,

Regarding the Paul Revere question you raised in the Bangor, Maine article, there's a second reference just behind the first one which states the matter clearly - a 2009 U. of So. Carolina Press book by Louis Arthur Norton ("Captains Contentious, pp. 81-82). Its not new information, but Norton tells the story in detail, including the part about escaping into the woods.

Take Care,

Buskahegian

Still remains a question. The main reference states, "an expedition organized by the likes of Paul Revere, who claimed it would be short, not too difficult nor too risky". Not even Paul Revere himself.
The link on the first page, to an "American account" does not mention Paul Revere specifically at the battle, but notes a later Committee of Enquiry in which Revere "suffered a blow to his reputation". He was evidently the Artillery Commander, and the vessels with artillery apparently were not among those that moved up the river and from which the men ended up in the forest.
As to the second reference, Google books could not show pages 80-82, so I cannot comment. I would like to see those pages, or a firm reference that supports the line "Paul Revere was among the survivors who fled into the woods".
Dumarest

Dear Dumarest,

The book should be at your local library, or certainly the nearest university library. If you can't obtain a copy, and are still concerned, you could always email the author, who's a noted naval historian and university professor. The reference is quite explicit about Revere retreating into the forest.

Redirect editing

edit

The following is copied from the noted Wiki item:

"Chorizo From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

 (Redirected from Longganisa)

Jump to:navigation, search "Longganisa" redirects here. You might want to see Longaniza."

Basically, longganisa is a Philippine spelling, the actual relevant page is longanisa. That redirect ought to be to longanisa, not chorizo. But I do not know how to edit Wiki to carry out that change. --Dumarest (talk) 14:53, 14 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Where you see (Redirected from Longganisa) on the top of the page, click on the link to Longganisa. That will take you to a page where you can edit the redirect. Edit that page and change Chorizo to the article you wish Longganisa to redirect to. For more information on redirects, you can go to Wikipedia:Redirect. Please let me know if there are any more questions. Thanks! --Mysdaao talk 15:22, 14 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Sickle Cell Disease Article

edit

Hello Dumarest - I am a graduate student at Suffolk University in Boston, MA getting my masters in Women's Health. My specialty is advocacy for Women of color with Sickle Cell Disease - women of african descent, and we have an ongoing assignment in our sociology class to critique an article on Wiki dealing with a woman's health issue. I naturally chose sickle Cell Disease and was astounded by the quality of the article. In my opinion there are some major issues with the article. I won't go too deep into it however I wanted to ask you a more specific question because it appears as if you contribute often to this article. Is it possible to get the beginning of the article changed to reflect the definition of the term Sickle Cell Disease. I have posted a request for edit on the disease talk page, but haven't gotten any responses yet. My next step will be to make the changes and see if my contribution sticks. I guess my question to you is - do you think my assessment is sound and sensible? Plus will I be likely to get my contribution published? Also any tips for a wiki novice? If you go to the Sickle Cell Disease vs. Sickle Cell Anemia section you'll be able to read my rationale behind wanting to change the first sentence and possibly the paragraph. Please furnish your thoughts - thank you! --MTD2010 (talk) 20:52, 25 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

I agree with your comments - I could probably edit, but I am almost 10 years retired from a career in sickle cell research, and am not on top of the latest material. I suggest you do the editing - anyone can edit Wikipedia. I look forward to seeing your material. Dumarest (talk) 18:55, 27 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for File:AliListonSI.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:AliListonSI.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 11:27, 23 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

All that is fine, but how do I do what is required?? The image is indeed in material about Ali, but it can be 'validated' as the cover of a special issue of Sports Illustrated, dealing with the fight. Dumarest (talk) 13:24, 23 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

:1 Copy this (to notepad or something)

{{Non-free use rationale
| Description =
| Source =
| Article =
| Portion =
| Low resolution =
| Purpose =
| Replaceability =
| Other information =
}}
2 Go to this link to edit the file page.
3 Paste that in, at the end
4 Fill it in. Give a good description, make sure you put the exact name of the article, and in the 'purpose' just explain why you must use it for this article - why any other (free) pic will not do. In the ;replacability' put 'not replacable'. In 'Low resolution' put 'yes'. In 'Portion' put 'Whole image'.
5 Remove the top line, {{di-no fair use rationale|date=23 March 2010}}
6 Save it
Job done. Have a cup of tea or something.
This will all be easier if you talk to us helpers at the same time, with this link.
Please try it, and ask for more help if you need to.  Chzz  ►  14:22, 23 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Struck, because it has now been deleted.  Chzz  ►  20:33, 4 April 2010 (UTC)Reply
Still think it is a valid image, but I cannot indicate a specific article for the image. It is my contention that the image can be used, as specific to Sports Illustrated, indicating that it is the cover of an issue of the magazine that is specific for the fight, a special issue, relating fair use to the magazine as is indicated in the fair use material. (Dumarest (talk) 11:20, 5 April 2010 (UTC))Reply
I'm sorry, but, the Non-free content requres that the image is used on at least one live article.  Chzz  ►  12:58, 5 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Ice-T

edit

The Ice-T (artist)topic has a to me strange problem. The talk page has two archives, nothing on the current talk page, but no entries since at least 6 months age (on that page there is an indication of an entry only a few days ago??). What happened to that talk?? Dumarest (talk) 16:39, 24 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yes, that is the article. I did the artist thing because when I first seached I got an disambiguation page and that [artist] described the one I wanted.Dumarest (talk) 16:08, 25 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
OK; give me a few minutes to work out what is going on, and I'll write more.  Chzz  ►  16:17, 25 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

I can't see anything wrong, to be honest; an automated system archives the page into Archive 1,2,3, etc whenever a thread is over 168 hours old. When an archive reaches a certain size, it starts a new one (ie "Archive 2", "Archive 3", etc).
There are just the two archives.
The last thing archived was back in September 2009, and there have not been any new sections since then - only minor edits.
You can see everything that happened to the talk page in the page history.
If you do think something is wrong, you can either;
  • Leave a message on my own talk page; OR
  • Use a {{helpme}} - please create a new section at the end of your own talk page, put {{helpme}}, and ask your question - remember to 'sign' your name by putting ~~~~ at the end; OR
  • Talk to us live, with this or this.
The last of those is particularly useful - please try it; pop in now and say hello.  Chzz  ►  17:25, 25 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Adrianne Wadewitz edit-a-thons in Southern New England

As you may have already heard, the Wikipedia community lost an invaluable member of the community last month. Adrianne Wadewitz was a feminist scholar of 18th-Century British literature, and a prolific editor of the site. As part of a worldwide series of tributes, New England Wikimedians, in conjunction with local institutions of higher learning, have created three edit-a-thons that will be occurring in May and June. The events are as follows:

We hope that you will be able to join us, whether you are an experienced editor or are using Wikipedia for the first time.

If you have any questions, please leave a message at Kevin Rutherford's talk page. You can unsubscribe from future notifications for Boston-area events by removing your name from this list.

ArbCom elections are now open!

edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.
