The changing boundaries of Stockport

edit
  • There was an ancient parish of Stockport, the first mention of which appears to be 1558.
  • Stockport was established as the County Borough of Stockport in 1889.
  • In 1894, Stockport Rural District was also established.
  • Subsequent years saw boundary changes that meant that Stockport encroached upon areas that were in Cheshire and areas that were in Lancashire.
  • County Boundaries may or may not have been altered as well, which is to be established.
  • The years of interest are those up to 1974, when Stockport and adjacent areas were transferred to Metropolitan Borough of Stockport in Greater Manchester.
