Image captions

edit

Hi, Andrey! Not really a big deal, but since this seems to be a part of your cleanup routine, I wanted to point out that the Wikipedia style guidelines explicitly state that image captions which do not form complete sentences should not end in a period. Thanks for all the other cleanup you are doing, though :) Cheers,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); March 5, 2018; 16:59 (UTC)

Hi. Thanks for pointing that out. I'm probably going to look over all the federal subject pages a few times, so I'll keep it in mind next time I see it. -AndreyKva (talk) 20:22, 5 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

National varieties of English

edit

Information icon  Hello. In a recent edit to the page Mariano Moreno, you changed one or more words or styles from one national variety of English to another. Because Wikipedia has readers from all over the world, our policy is to respect national varieties of English in Wikipedia articles.

For a subject exclusively related to the United Kingdom (for example, a famous British person), use British English. For something related to the United States in the same way, use American English. For something related to another English-speaking country, such as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, India, or Pakistan use the variety of English used there. For an international topic, use the form of English that the original author of the article used.

In view of that, please don't change articles from one version of English to another, even if you don't normally use the version in which the article is written. Respect other people's versions of English. They, in turn, should respect yours. Other general guidelines on how Wikipedia articles are written can be found in the Manual of Style. If you have any questions about this, you can ask me on my talk page or visit the help desk. Thank you. Alexf(talk) 19:54, 7 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

The article Mariano Moreno used both American and British English.

I've counted the instances where each variety was used. British English spellings were used 6 times (labour, afterwards, favourable, honours, antagonised, afterwards). American English spellings were used 10 times (favoring, honor, counselor, channeled, labeled, counselors, neighboring, favor, neighboring, traveled).

As such, the article already leaned towards American English, which is why I changed those 6 British instances in order to standardize the language used throughout the article (an article using spellings from two different English varieties is problematic). If anything, changing it to British English would be a bigger change.

Whenever I edit an article, I always keep in mind the different varieties of English and consider which would be appropriate to use in the article. Even though I personally use American English, I don't have any personal bias towards it. I didn't make this change without considering it first.

If you disagree with the change I've made, you should go ahead and edit the article to exclusively use British English. AndreyKva (talk) 23:37, 7 June 2018 (UTC)

Ok then. -- Alexf(talk) 23:50, 7 June 2018 (UTC)
  • Hi there. With regard to your edit at Federal subjects of Russia - Please see MOS:RETAIN, which states "When an English variety's consistent usage has been established in an article, maintain it in the absence of consensus to the contrary. With few exceptions (e.g., when a topic has strong national ties or a term/spelling carries less ambiguity), there is no valid reason for such a change" AusLondonder (talk) 04:40, 27 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Buryaia religion

edit

Hi,

What was wrong with adding the percentage of Muslims in Buryatia? I based it on this sentence:"Islam is followed by immigrant groups like Azeris and Uzbeks, who constitute another 0.7% of the population."

Take care :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Museagle (talkcontribs) 12:17, 10 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

1. The bar chart is based on statistics from the Sreda Arena Atlas survey. The survey shows that less than 0.5% of the population of Buryatia follow Islam.
2. Adding 0.7% to the chart makes it mathematically wrong. If you add up all of the groups on the bar chart, you'll get 100%. If you add in 0.7%, it makes it 100.7%.
3. Not every Azerbaijani or Uzbek in Buryatia is necessarily a Muslim.

MOS:LQ & dates

edit

Hello AndreyKva, thank you for you recent cleanup of language on various video game article. While the changes are most helpful, I'd like to address two specific recurring problems:

  • It seems like you are not following MOS:LQ. Basically, if a quote does not contain a full sentence, it should not end in a comma or full stop. If a comma or full stop is adjacent to such a quote, it is placed outside the quotation marks. Should the quote, however, include full sentences, the full stop is placed within the quotation marks.
  • In some cases, you are changing the likes of "in April 2008" to "on April 2008". Note that April only has 30 days, so "April 2008" denotes a month+year combination. In English, you can do something at a time, on a day, and in a month/year, so the "in April 2008" phrasing should remain.

Thanks, and happy editing! Lordtobi () 05:39, 24 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Similarly I've noticed a few cases where you tagged an article with a date format, but it is using a different date format or you did not make an effort to unify the dates. Please make sure any maintenance templates you place have actually be checked. -- ferret (talk) 00:28, 25 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Alexey Dobrovolsky

edit

Hi AndreyKva. You added the short form references "Shnirelman 2021", "Klein 2004", "Prokofiev, Filatov, Coskello 2006", and "Shizhensky 2009" to Alexey Dobrovolsky, but none of these have any full cite to link with. Could you add the required full cite site to the "Literature" section, or let me know what works these refer to? -- LCU ActivelyDisinterested transmissions °co-ords° 12:28, 9 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi ActivelyDisinterested, I was still working on the page when you messaged me. I'm finished now and I think I've fixed all of that now. If you have any more issues with the page, please don't hesitate to reach out :) AndreyKva (talk) 13:55, 9 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
I made a couple of corrections. Can I suggest turning on the error messages, they're off by default, you can see how at the top of the category Category:Harv and Sfn no-target errors. -- LCU ActivelyDisinterested transmissions °co-ords° 14:18, 9 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Ah, thank you! I have the errors turned on, but I missed them as it's pretty late here and I'm planning on touching up the page tomorrow. AndreyKva (talk) 14:20, 9 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
No problems, I've been trying to clear some of these errors down. I've just started clearing "E", so articles that are alphabetically lower stick out. -- LCU ActivelyDisinterested transmissions °co-ords° 14:24, 9 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Undefined sfn reference in Modern paganism

edit

Hi, in this edit on 14 March you introduced {{sfn|McCann|1990|p=75-79}} but did not define the source. This means that nobody can look it up, and also causes the article to be in Category:Harv and Sfn no-target errors. If you could fix this that would be great. Copying/translating content within Wikipedias requires attribution

edit

Hi. I see in a recent addition to Vladimir Kirpichnikov (general) you included material copied/translated from the Russian Wikipedia. That's okay, but you have to give attribution so that our readers are made aware that you copied the prose rather than wrote it yourself. It's also required under the terms of the license. I've added the attribution for this particular instance. Please make sure that you follow this licensing requirement when copying from compatibly-licensed material in the future. — Diannaa (talk) 14:14, 28 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for letting me know. I will do that from now on. Apologies for not having done that before. -AndreyKva (talk) 23:44, 28 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
By the way, I'm going through the pages I previously edited with content from the Russian Wikipedia to add the {{translated page|ru||small=no}} template, but it would take a while. Do you know if there's a way to automate the process (add the template, fill it with the title of the Russian article)? -AndreyKva (talk) 23:50, 28 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
I don't think there's a way to automate that process. — Diannaa (talk) 01:11, 29 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi,
It's a different one: https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%A9%D0%B5%D1%80%D0%B1%D0%B0%D0%BA%D0%BE%D0%B2,_%D0%92%D0%BB%D0%B0%D0%B4%D0%B8%D0%BC%D0%B8%D1%80_%D0%98%D0%B2%D0%B0%D0%BD%D0%BE%D0%B2%D0%B8%D1%87_(%D0%BF%D0%B8%D1%81%D0%B0%D1%82%D0%B5%D0%BB%D1%8C)
He does not have an English article.
I fixed the link in the Yemelyanov article to point to that Russian article instead of Vladimir Shcherbakov.

Thank you. Last thing I want to do is link the wrong one.
