JCarriker served as an editor and admin at Wikipedia for a number of years, departing in September 2006. He contributed a number of articles about people, places, or buildings, including the Marshall, Texas article, which is the oldest surviving featured city article and the one that has been featured the longest. The Marshall article was cited as a model by users wanting to work up city articles to featured status, and thus has influenced many other articles styles; as such, it was probably his most important work.

JCarriker was also a member of the Association of Members' Advocates and the Mediation Committee and was instrumental in the founding of the WikiProjects dedicated to Texas, Ancient Egypt, and U.S. regions. He also founded the defunct and controversial organization Esperanza.
