Vasfi Egeli
editAli Vasfi Egeli (1890-Istanbul-10 April, 1962, Istanbul) was a Turkish architect whose most prominent work is Şişli Mosque in Istanbul.
Life and Work
editHe was born in 1890 in the Şehzadebaşı district of Istanbul and graduated from the architecture department of Sanayi-i Nefise Mekebi Alisi in 1913. After graduating, he started to work in the Ministry of Foundations but, due to the outbreak of the First World War, he was drafted into the military. He worked in the map department throughout the war, but returned to his old job afterwards. During this period he also worked with Mimar Kemaleddin Bey and Nihat Nigizberk.
After Nihat Nigizberk retired, he became the Chief Architect of the Istanbul Foundations. During this period he took part in restoration work on several historic monuments in Istanbul and worked to protect the area surrounding Eyüp Mosque.
During his career he planned and implemented many mosque projects including the Feneryolu Mosque which he designed in 1947 and the Şifa Mosque in Moda. But the most important and architecturally significant of his works was the Şişli Mosque which he designed in 1949. It stands at the junction of Halaskargazi and Abide-i Hürriyet Streets in Şişli and is considered one of the most important mosques designed in the Second National Architecture style.
He died in Moda in 1962 at his home in Moda Caddesi, Istanbul.
