Readings & Assignments

For Sep 7:
- read New Yorker article Know It All and Wikipedia:Tutorial
- Create an account and add your name to the Students list below
- Edit your user page so that it has something on it
- Make at least one article edit - fix a spelling mistake, remove some vandalism, or some other small but useful contribution

For Sep 14:
- Read Wikipedia:Five pillars
- Make 4 productive edits to articles - they can be grammar or spelling fixes, formatting, vandalism reverting, whatever.

For Sep 21:
- Read "The Faith-Based Encyclopedia"
- Continue editing
- Look around at some of the behind-the-scenes pages, such as WP:Wikipedia Signpost and WP:Village Pump

For Sep 28:
- Read Wikipedia:Verifiability
- Choose an article from Category:History of Buffalo, New York and research the topic - find some new, useful, verifiable information to add. See Wikipedia:Citing sources for detailed instructions on citing a reference.

For Oct 5:
- Read Samuels' "Illustrated Story of Copyright", Chapter 1 and Templeton's 10 Big Myths about copyright explained
- Continue editing
- Find some wikipedia content (text or an image) that you think is a copyright infringement, or that you're just unsure about the correct handling of its copyright. Bring its page name / URL to class.

For Oct 12:
- Read William Patry's "Protecting the Idle Rich"
- Upload an image to Wikipedia or to Wikimedia Commons. It should be something you created (not based on someone else's work), or clearly public domain (e.g. published in the U.S. prior to 1923). Try to find something useful for an article, but if you can't, an image for your user page is also acceptable.

For Oct 19:
- Read "Bound by Law?"
- Upload an image if you haven't already. Make sure your images are properly described and tagged. Include something like the following (replacing "WHAT THIS IS A PHOTO OF", "YOUR_USER_NAME" and the date by the appropriate information):

For Oct 26:
- Read The dotCommunist Manifesto.
- Upload a useful, historical image from a public domain source, such as the University of Maryland yearbooks (1970 or before), or the Library of Congress's Bain Collection or FSA Collection. Make sure you properly include the source and copyright information. Try to avoid uploading a photo that someone else has already uploaded.
  - Examples: File:Alan Pastrana.jpg, File:Ggbain.jpg, File:3c29107v.jpg

For Nov 2:
- Read "Creative Types: A Lot in Common" and Creative Commons' licenses summary.
- Fix problems with your previous uploads or edits.

For Nov 9:
- Read GNU & The Free Software Foundation Engineering Tech Talk at Google (primarily up through section 13; read the rest if you're interested)
- Find & try a piece of free software, such as OpenOffice, GIMP, Audacity, Zotero, Perl/Python/PHP, etc

For Nov 16:
- Read Chapter 3 of Benkler's Wealth of Networks.
- Do some work on a crowdsourcing project other than Wikipedia - NASA's "Be a Martian", Distributed Proofreaders, or some other similar project that looks interesting.

No class Nov 23

For Nov 30:
- Read "Archives or Assets" and "Online Rebel Publishes Millions of Dollars in U.S. Court Records for Free"

For Dec 7
- Read "The Photographer's Right". Browse the discussions/photos at [1].
