In many of the more relaxed civilizations on the Outer Eastern Rim of the Galaxy, the Hitch Hiker's Guide has already supplanted the great Encyclopedia Galactica as the standard repository of all knowledge and wisdom, for though it has many omissions and contains much that is apocryphal, or at least wildly inaccurate, it scores over the older, more pedestrian work in two important respects. First, it is slightly cheaper; and secondly it has the words DON'T PANIC inscribed in large friendly letters on its cover.

Hi there,
My name is Andrew Lau and I'm based in Sydney, Australia. I've been on Wikipedia since October 2003, but I didn't start becoming a Wikipedian until 2006. My nickname comes from having played as a sniper in QuakeWorld Team Fortress many, many years ago.

But it's got the public playing the encyclopedia game. To extend the analogy, it's also like playing a game in the sense that playing it has no consequences.

Wikipedia often does feel like a game of no consequence from time to time with the endless hours of bias, edit-warring, fancruft, lies, spam, vanity and vandalism to deal with, but I'm still here helping out behind the scenes. Why? Because deep down I believe that information wants to be free and I feel that it's my duty to make sure that this place doesn't fall apart while this great project tries to document everything notable known to humanity.
I just hope I don't forget to bring my towel…

The RickK Anti-Vandalism Barnstar
I award you this barnstar as recognition of the fine work you did in trying to explain to 66.133.207.244 about why his posts on genetics aren't acceptable on Wikipedia - you managed to deal with what could have ended up as a huge post-war with a cool head. Thank you! -Killfest2 04:58, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

For highly diligent patrolling of requests for unblock and excellent work in putting together the {{unblock-auto}} template which saves busy admins time and blocked editors pain, I'm honored to present you with this Working Man's Barnstar. Just as we must be steadfast in deterring vandalism, we should be equally vigilant in preserving the ability of good users to edit Wikipedia. On behalf of the community, thank you.
