Talk:Wedding vow renewal ceremony

Notability

edit

I'm not sold on the idea that this is notable enough for an entry. Outside of the usual wedding industry stuff I have only found 3 good sources. One is the Otnes and Pleck source already used (which has all of two pages on the subject), and the others are two journal articles, both by two other scholars (Brainwaith and Baxter), which I am going to have a look at in the next few days. Like most things that are potentially profitable to the wedding industry, this phenomenon has most likely been blown out of proportion in the popular "how to" book market and other tentacles of the industry. Rebecca Mead also mentions vow renewals at the end of One Perfect Day: The Selling of the American Wedding. In her very brief discussion, which is really meant to illustrate another point and is mostly anecdotal and reflective, she expresses the tension between manufactured commercial nature of these events and the felt authenticity of their practitioners. Unfortunately I found little of use there for an encyclopedia entry.Griswaldo (talk) 13:03, 19 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

I didn't start the article in order to promote or validate the ceremonies, just to say that they exist. I'm sure to lots of people they are important. One thing I found out is that they often figure in the plots of TV shows. Borock (talk) 14:22, 19 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
I didn't think you did. I'm just noting that when you google this you'll get thousands of hits, all tracing back to wedding industry information of some sort of another. There is very little coverage in reliable sources. That is a problem when one wants to write an encyclopedia entry. Cheers.Griswaldo (talk) 14:57, 19 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Dummie source?

edit

I think "Wedding Planning for Dummies", although not the greatest, is an okay source for information on the reasons people have for holding wedding renewal ceremonies. This is a report on what is going on in the culture, and it does not require any great scholarship to give that information. My impression of the Dummie books is that they are written by people with some expertise in the field and are well researched. Borock (talk) 11:48, 23 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
