Should this article now be moved to Reedham (London) railway station, as the article for Reedham (Norfolk) railway station now exists. The Reedham railway station can then be turned into a disambiguation page. All pages which link to the London station article would have to be changed to avoid the redirect. Any thoughts? (Our Phellap 22:56, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC))

The NR Live Departure Board refers to the station as Reedham (Surrey), but the article says it can be called Reedham (London) or Reedham (GLC) as well - I'd prefer Reedham (London) as it's in a London Borough but maybe we should use the same name as the LDB? But vote yes to moving the page. edd 09:51, 19 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Probably best to call the article Reedham (Surrey) if that's what Network Rail call the station. Reedham (London) and Reedham (GLC) can be redirects if it is also known by those names. (Our Phellap 11:16, 19 Apr 2005 (UTC))
Moved to Reedham (Surrey) railway station. I've put in a redirect from Reedham (London), but dont see the need for one from Reedham GLC (unless that's what printed on tickets) as the GLC no longer exists... edd 14:14, 19 Apr 2005 (UTC)

December, 2005

Not sure what happened between April and December, but what was agreed above certainly wasn't true by then. It looked as if someone had transposed the content of the Reedham (Surrey) railway station back to Reedham railway station, without using the move command (naughty) and not bothered to move this talk page as well, or discuss what they were doing here. I have reverted the changes, and fixed up the redirs. -- Chris j wood 17:10, 23 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Yes. This page should have been at Reedham railway station (London) in the first place. Other stations in London which need disambiguation also use this form: Victoria station (London). MRSC 08:58, 24 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
The only problem with that is that the station is actually called Reedham (Surrey) (see [1]). So Wikipedia article name disambiguation rules are essentially irrelevant; ATOC (or whoever disambiguates British station names these days) has already done the job. But, hey, I only got involved because I was trying to sort out a completely inappropriate disambiguation header on the article on the Norfolk village, so I'll bow to your views. -- Chris j wood 15:47, 24 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
Looking further, I see that the station referred to in the Wikipedia article Victoria station (London) is really called London Victoria ([2]). So maybe the Wikipedia naming standard for London stations is we know better than the people who actually name the stations. :-( -- Chris j wood 15:59, 24 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Reedham railway station (London)Reedham (Surrey) railway station – This station is referred to as Reedham (Surrey) by Network Rail as well as the train operating company which serves it:

This is a more WP:COMMONNAME for the station than the wiki-creation of "Reedham railway station (London)". Lamberhurst (talk) 10:13, 21 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • Support in principle. I did a quick Google search, and while some results came up for London, most of them were for Surrey. In addition, the station's address is in Surrey, as of course is the postcode, which is more evidence in favour of the proposed change. However, we usually put disambiguation brackets at the end of article names, not in the middle. So my choice would be Reedham railway station (Surrey), rather than the one proposed above. Lamberhurst, does this sound reasonable to you? — Mr. Stradivarius ♪ talk ♪ 14:10, 22 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Not really because Reedham railway station (Surrey) is another made-up wiki-creation which bears no relation to how the station is named in reality. Per WP:NATURAL, if the WP:COMMONNAME incorporates a disambiguating term, this should be used in preference to parenthetical disambiguation at the end of an article name. Lamberhurst (talk) 16:52, 22 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
So, to paraphrase User:Chris j wood in the above discussion from 2005, you presume to know better than the responsible national operators? Lamberhurst (talk) 18:09, 23 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Regarding the postcode and postal address - the postcode shows which sorting office handles the mail for that address, and sorting offices can be in another administrative area quite easily (several villages in northern Hampshire have their mail sorted at Newbury, but Highclere, for example, is definitely not in Berkshire). The Post Office use a system of counties that doesn't bear any relation to either geographic or administrative counties, past or present. They're an aid to sorting the mail, no more or less.
Whether Reedham railway station is really in Greater London or not is immaterial; what counts is surely the station's name as it is known by the rail companies. If you go to the National Rail Enquiries Journey Planner, click in the "Station / Postcode" box (either the "From" one or "to", doesn't matter) and key in "Reedham", you get offered a list of two: "Reedham (Norfolk) - [REE]"; "Reedham (Surrey) - [RHM]". London simply isn't mentioned. Surrey is also shown at Station facilities for Reedham (Surrey). --Redrose64 (talk) 23:41, 23 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Although both [3] and [4] use "Reedham (London)". In any case, the common name for this station is "Reedham station". Adding parenthesis in the middle of the article title is against disambiguation policy. MRSC (talk) 06:42, 24 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Neither www.thetrainline.com (formally Trainline.com Limited) nor www.takethetrain.co.uk (formally Click Travel Ltd) are railway companies; they're independent ticket agents. What they call the stations is surely their own business. --Redrose64 (talk) 09:20, 24 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
Although both get their data from http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ according to the websites. MRSC (talk) 14:18, 24 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
