Bear Surprise gained an enormous popularity in Russian Internet under the name Превед (Preved).

If this makes sense to you and it should be in the article, could you put it back with some context? --203.206.79.202 11:43, 7 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Latest Interview

It's really sad, he doesn't even paint or clean his apartment anymore, he just sits in it feeling helpless http://www.joe-mammy.com/pages/features/john-lurie-3/lurie.htm probably should mention some of this stuff —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.245.74.248 (talk) 07:20, 11 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

desired addition

edit

This is being presented and I am a bit unsure what to do wit it, the cite seems a bit reliablish but the addition seems poorly explained. thoughts ...

In 2002, John Lurie became ill with Advanced Lyme Disease which made him unable to perform music. During the last two years Lurie has lived under considerable duress because of a stalker situation addressed in this article: http://www.jambands.com/features/2011/02/01/john-lurie-sustains/

It leaves me asking stalker? whats that all about - is this something we should be reporting here, are there reports of this in mainstream publications? Off2riorob (talk) 17:50, 14 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

I added Lurie's belief that he has Lyme disease, reported many times by Lurie himself in interviews. I have not added the stalker; I'm not sure about it yet. I will continue to look at the sources to see if the stalker merits a mention. Binksternet (talk) 01:00, 15 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I added the bit about the stalker, but I cannot determine anything approaching the truth of the matter, so I left it undescribed and up-in-the-air. Curious readers can go to the sources and try to sift through the opinions. Binksternet (talk) 16:08, 15 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
Yes, it is a story of dubious value, but such stuff gets discussed and reported and as such at least it is well presented. Without additional reports in mainstream sources I will be looking to this addition as a focus point for stability. Best regards and thanks for your improvements to the BLP.Off2riorob (talk) 16:16, 15 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
The last paragraph about the stalker makes no sense and adds nothing to the article. I would delete the whole thing unless someone can make sense of it. What's the point, anyway? imho Nickrz (talk) 22:38, 3 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
The paragraph means a great deal to Lurie, his friends and his enemies. The dispute between Lurie and Perry dragged a lot of New Yorkers into an argument, a notable one. Earlier, Perry's crew was trying to paint Lurie black in this article but their sources had very low reliability: blogs and online discussion boards. Better sources were available to clear Lurie's name, and Lurie is very concerned that these sources are given a voice. Check out these earlier discussions for some of the historic back and forth: User talk:Binksternet/Archive13#John Lurie, Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons/Noticeboard/Archive109#John_Lurie, Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons/Noticeboard/Archive114#John_Lurie_stalker, Wikipedia:Editor_assistance/Requests/Archive_97#lurie_dispute, Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/3RRArchive154#Lurielurie_reported_by_User:The_Interior_.28Result:_24h.29.
Hope that helps! Binksternet (talk) 23:29, 3 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Chronic Lyme disease

edit

The opening paragraph currently flatly states that he has chronic Lyme disease. I believe this should be changed to saying that he believes he has that disease, since as its wikipedia page states, most doctors do not consider that to be a useful diagnosis. The personal life section also states that eight doctors confirm the diagnosis, but I could not find that information in the given links. Subcelestial (talk) 21:17, 29 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

I think a greater degree of certainty is appropriate. Lurie got confusing diagnoses but then a consensus emerged among the doctors. Here's the cited source: Rick Moody writes about the conclusion, "...having by now been diagnosed by eight different purveyors of contemporary medicine with chronic Lyme Disease." Seems solid to me. Syrian ancestry?

edit

His face doesn't look Anglo-Saxon. He looks more like mix of Arabian (probably Syrian) and White. The name "Lurie" sounds English enough, but his face. I have been to Syria and a lot of people there look very similar. Can someone confirm Lurie is of Syrian descent? 93.219.170.174 (talk) 05:55, 23 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

(10 years later) It's not very encyclopedic that the current version of this article includes no information about Lurie's family background or ethnic heritage. 173.88.246.138 (talk) 17:45, 4 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
This article states that Lurie is a "half-Welsh, half-Russian-American Jew." Source: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2010/08/16/sleeping-with-weapons 173.88.246.138 (talk) 17:53, 4 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
This additional article clarifies that Lurie's mother was Welsh and his father was half Jewish and half Sicilian. Source: https://www.villagevoice.com/2020/01/28/john-lurie-growing-up-in-public/ 173.88.246.138 (talk) 18:06, 4 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Chronic Lyme disease (again)

edit

As the person said 9 years ago the article on CLD basically says it's not a real disease. The article should reflect that. I will change it. Sirhissofloxley (talk) 18:39, 3 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Where does he live?

edit

Does Lurie now live on a Caribbean island? If so, why not mention that in the article? 173.88.246.138 (talk) 17:45, 4 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
