Why was no mention made of the racism promoted by Burnham against the East Indians of Guyana? This article was poorly researched
You should provide evidence to support your claims. And your statement about the 'greatest tragedy' etc. would be considered opinion not fact.

Keep in mind this is just a matter of oppinion , and that we all have . There is no proven fact that Burnham was a racist or byas , Burnham did lead Guyana and did it his way , he also had Indians in various goverment position . As i could remember clearly when Burnham was alive guyana was a place we could have call our home , the economy was good free medical , free education with books free land free water , the only bad thing i know that he did was stop all imported food ,His reason for changing course was to strenghten the economy of the country , we were heading in a direction that would have cripple every poor man . He made that decision based on the wealth of the country , Guyana is a very rich country rich in mineral ,bauxite , food and oil untouch. Today i learn that most of the food was junk, the international market was shipping the poorest grade of food to us , i am glad he banned some of those stuff , I am currently Living in the USA and i've seen all kind of illness in this country and most of them came from the intake of the food the grew up on , When Burnham expire in 1985 his successor brought back all the things Burnham banned and that was the down spiral for guyana ,Now everything change ,we have poor medical , poor education standard ,high crime , paying for water ,no more free land and a bunch of thieves in the goverment sector , even the police is thieves go figure that. These comments are vicious and may incite a bad image on LFS Burnham. Many people may have his/her respective opinion on Burnham's diplomacy, though good or bad, wikipedia.org isn’t designed to share opinions but facts. It would be fitting for Mr. Wilson to create his personal site to bash whoever he desires. Lord Darksycthe (talk) 16:24, 8 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Claims are not supported

edit

This article paints an accurate description of guyana under burhum leadership. he was clearly just like the uganda "president for life" idi amein dada who took his country from a well organized structure and threw it into kaos. neither of these guys knew anything about economics and both were racists. I was a child in burham times and seen for myself how bad things were in guyana during the 1970's . this article is very accurate and actually paints a good picture of him in my opinion. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.233.84.53 (talk) 02:40, 17 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Quite a few claims are made in the article, but no effort is made to cite the sources that support these claims. Specific claims made;

- Burnham and Jagan disagreed over the latter's Communist leanings. - Burnham sought to undermine the Jagan government via CIA financed strikes. - The purpose of proportional representation was to prevent the PPP from winning. - Burnham is responsible for the Jonestown murders. - Burnham's reign was characterized by racial injustice and massive corruption. - Burnham's ideology was triggered by .... Actually that statement doesn't make sense. - Goods were stashed in Trinidad and Tobago for Burnham's use - Guyana's population was reduced by 50%. This one is demonstrably false. - Burnham was a visionary. Opinion. - Burnham's vision was to establish an egalitarian society ...... - Burnham's successful efforts .... - Guyana is in decline due to foreign intervention in its domestic affairs.

72.88.175.227 22:52, 21 February 2007 (UTC)==Political battle== I think you should not have your political disagreement on wikipedia. Many of the claims made are either false, or misleading. While I accept that Burnham is a polarizing force in Guyanese society, I don't think you should be foisting this crap on unsuspecting people.Reply

I very much agree with the above post. The more of this article I read the more incredulous I became about its truth. There are many parts that are simply someone's personal opinion about this man and that is not at all what this site is for. What further causes concern is the utter lack of source for this article so I think a major overhaul of this page is necessary. I will do my best to do some research on the subject. Of course anyone is welcome to clean up but you must have sources that support what you say. Rajrajmarley (talk) 09:30, 11 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

I'm afraid I'll have to disagree with your comment on Burnham's polarizing force in Guyanese society. Please re-read 'A Short History of The Guyanese People' by Vere T Daly pg303. Jagan was the one who used to Hindi word 'apanjaht', which means 'support your own race'.Lord Darksycthe (talk) 14:47, 9 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Reworked article

edit

Previous article was not very objective and contained personal interpretations. I totally reworked pulling out the facts as best as possible. It now needs to be expanded.) Roopster 15:03, 25 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Banned items and internal food Production

edit

Most and some dont have the same meaning. According to the information...he banned some items ...no he Banned all if not most imported food items. and this was the mid 1970's. I'm sure no where in the word in the mid 70's were there even talking about healty food except the U.S....and even that I doubt.

This was period when mass migration out of Guyana stated. People were starting to leave because they couldn't get basic food items. Getting a can of canned sardines or corned beef was back market.

"Burnham believed that his people and his country were more than capable of producing these same foods (a healthier version) being a country rich in natural resources, a land of many waters, there was no reason for Guyana as a nation to be importing such foods."

Forgot!!!

edit

while he did a nice job of trying improve the health (hospital...free still I think, for whatever little it can provide these days) and sustain free public school education and then university....

We forgot the main part of his biography...where he took over a country that was not in too bad shape after the British left...and ran it into the ground.

Burnham was a racist against everyone except his family. Don't forget he also successfully set up a bomb blast for Walter Rodney, a well known known Black Guyanese University professor who was also talking out against him. He became someone that most normal people feared.

He engage in Stalinist? imagery and propaganda (see his photo on this page), and was feared by most of opponents, and the public — Preceding unsigned comment added by Starbwoy (talkcontribs) 01:52, 15 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

1. He made university education totally free 2. Made hospitals free (few or no countries in the Caribbean have this) 2. He maintained a strong education system, for a poor counry.Starbwoy (talk) 20:18, 20 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Here we go again! was revised and most info was removed

edit

People keep changing the information trying to leave out all the bad "stuff". this man was in power for over 30 years yet the info is like an 4 year term MP. it does not matter how many coats of paint you try to slap on this article regarding this man, the rust will still show through, and the re visors don't want the rust showing through so it will never be a balanced article. - "Burnham was one of the founding leaders of the People's Progressive Party (PPP), which was launched on January 1, 1950; the Indo-Guyanese labor leader Cheddi Jagan became PPP Leader, while Burnham became its Chairman.[1] In 1952, Burnham became the president of the party's affiliated trade union, the British Guiana Labour Union, in 1952. In 1953, the PPP won 18 of 24 seats in the first election permitted by the British colonial government. In the short-lived PPP government that followed, Burnham served as Minister of Education.[2]" - The article is trying to put Jagan as the communist...while BOTH of them were very far left leaning SOCIALISTS....Thats why they were in the SAME PARTY. BURNHAM left and formed the other party because he was cajoled and propped and promised "things" by the British...but it was in fact the Americans who were pulling all the strings..including the strings of the British government/colonial government officeStarbwoy (talk) 00:08, 13 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
