I had the pleasure of encountering David before he passed away; I worked in telephone banking and David rang in with an account enquiry. On noticing his name, I exclaimed “Now THERE’S a name!!” to which David enquired “ Oh yes, how’s that?” I replied “David Nobbs penned the best television comedy of all time- The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin, starring Leonard Rossiter!” David humbly replied “Yes, that’s me.” I told David “You’re an absolute genius sir- I’ve never laughed at a comedy on television so much before or since! It’s an honour to meet you!” David was quite pleased at this, I answered his account queries and reiterated my admiration, and he went on his way.
