In the video game Deus Ex, black helicopters are a main plot element. Maybe this could be mentioned? 75.177.11.11 (talk) 13:50, 22 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

The black helicopter phenomenon may have only attracted mainstream visibility in the 1990s, but I know I heard the concept mentioned (in the context of both UFOs / Men In Black / cattle mutilations and 'One World Government' conspiracy in the 1980s.

I'd like to know what those pre-1990s sources were. Natecull (talk) 20:17, 12 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

The earliest reference to United Nations black helicopters I clearly recall was in the awful miniseries Amerika, so I was rather bemused when they showed up years later in conspiracy theories. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 4.242.60.75 (talk) 05:31, 10 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

what I am about to say is very OR. I ran an RPG game in the eerly eightes (1983 to be exact) that featured Black Choppers. I did not origionate this ides, but I can't rember where i stole it from. [[Slatersteven (talk) 22:28, 23 December 2008 (UTC)]]Reply

Noted that mercenary groups such as Blackwater appear to have black helicopters. Patricia Hurst was pictured near a black helicopter, also. The movie "Capricorn One" has 2 black helicopters tracking down one of the escaped "astronauts"

I'm going to remove the bit about phone-tapping. The reference is just a poor picture of two different helicopters in a field. 71.59.123.192 (talk) 19:17, 22 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Color vs aircraft registration

edit

Isn’t the main point about the concept of “black helicopters” not their exact shade of color but that they’re allegedly unmarked? Missing aircraft registration, in turn, would make it difficult to track down their owner or prove which oppressive or secretive organization was supposedly using them. — Jukka Aho (talk)

Actualy I felt it was the colour as such. But then it has rather changed over the years.Slatersteven (talk) 19:12, 26 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
    • Indeed, I couldn't get very far into this article. It seems more like a long rant mocking those who think the gobermint is out to get them then an actual entry about Black Helicopters. I've always been under the impression that "Black Helicopter" ment an unmarked, jet black helicopter without registration or flight plan. I'm also not sure why the article suggests this conspiracy theroy is the sole properity of the militia movement. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.159.89.194 (talk) 19:02, 29 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
      • Yeah, this article is way too ridiculing and biased. I have actually seen eight of these black unmarked helicopters myself 14 years ago with my mother. We were on our apartment balcony that overlooked the main road, and these choppers just came flying by terribly low. I could have thrown a rock at them and dinged the paint job; that's how low they were. Now surely that's breaking a few air traffic laws? This article needs a complete rewrite as I currently find it offensive when recalling my experience. Koji (talk) 06:16, 15 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Why no mention of the crashed "Black Helicopter" during the bin Laden raid in Abbattabad? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.249.10.139 (talk) 00:01, 5 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

All dark colored vehicles look black from a distance

edit

It's worth pointing out that with distance all dark-colored helicopters look black and it's hard to see their identification markings.--Varkman (talk) 04:09, 26 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

A history of "black helicopters".

edit

Why is there no mention in this article of the stealth helicopters used in the Bin Laden raid? There are documents on the Defense Technology information center for "stealth helicopters" dated 1978. http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/a058906.pdf

The article reads like a conspiracy theory "debunk" and yet here we are with a history of making actual quiet black helicopters.

In interview with Marc Maron, Obama says that Black Helicopters do exist

edit

Obama says that Black Helicopters do exist: http://potus.wtfpod.com/podcast/episodes/episode_613_-_president_barack_obama/ He said "There are black helicopters, but we generally don’t deploy them [...] we deploy them against bin Laden but we generally don’t deploy them on U.S. soil.”

As far as I could tell, he wasn't saying it in jest, and was entirely earnest.84.94.196.2 (talk) 21:49, 23 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Removal of five out of six paragraphs in the "Possible explanations" section

edit

I object to this deletion because it was made to impose an arbitrary requirement which is not part of policies, guidelines, or even essays. WP:NPOV and WP:FALSEBALANCE require that fringe statements be balanced by mainstream views whether they mention the fringe position or not. There is no requirement that conspiracy theories can only be debunked with sources mentioning them. @EvergreenFir: do you still believe there is? If so, in which specific part of a policy or other rule? EllenCT (talk) 02:01, 18 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Are you serious? Some of those bulletpoints weren't even sourced! This is just WP:IDHT at this point. Go read the examples of WP:OR again if you are sincerely confused. EvergreenFir (talk) 02:05, 18 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Of course I'm serious. I think you've made up a requirement which has never existed in any rule, doubled down on it, and emboldened by a pile-on against me by other people who can't actually point to any articulation of the rule you are trying to impose either, you're just trying to save face. I am going to continue to ask that you show us what rule requires that conspiracy theories can only be debunked with sources mentioning them, for as long as you continue to claim that such a rule exists. EllenCT (talk) 04:06, 18 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
The citations (for those that did have them) were relevant in the context of "The US government operating black helicopters". I don't think your change improves the article, which should be the main goal here. If you look at this articles history I have attempted to improve this section already because I had the same concerns you have. However, I agree with EllenCT that these "real" black helicopters are important to balance this page. Murchison-Eye (talk) 03:31, 18 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

First sentence

edit

I think something is missing or mis-worded in the first sentence: "In the United States militia movement, black helicopter is a symbol and an alleged conspiratorial military takeover of the United States". Should it be "a symbol of an alleged.."? I'm not familiar enough with the conspiracy theory to be sure how it should be worded, but it doesn't make sense the way it is. Schazjmd (talk) 00:14, 25 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

I could see a number of possible ways this was meant to be worded, but yes your way is as good as any other, does look like a typo.Slatersteven (talk) 09:10, 25 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, I'll make the update, and others can tweak it as necessary. Schazjmd (talk) 21:45, 25 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Scope of article

edit

This is kind of a mashup at this point. It starts by talking about the conspiracy theory black helicopters, then it morphs into literal black helicopters, then a pop culture section, half of which are just helicopters that happen to be painted black. What is the actual topic here? Niteshift36 (talk) 19:12, 5 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

I think the problem is, it is all of those things. MAybe we can leave out most of the real-world examples, as really this is about cultural phenomena. Slatersteven (talk) 15:45, 29 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • Having helicopters merely painted black seems like a ridiculous reason for an article. And listing any helicopter painted black in a movie or TV show (I'm looking at you Airwolf) seems even more ridiculous. Why not a list of movies that use black SUV's? To me, the only real encyclopedic topic is the conspiracy theory part of it. Niteshift36 (talk) 14:55, 30 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
But the pop culture references are inspired by that conspiracy theory. Slatersteven (talk) 15:41, 30 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • And if we can show a connection, sure. For example, the use in the movie Amerika, seems relevant. The mention that a character uses a black helicopter in the game Deus Ex or the generic black bad guy helicopters of Airwolf, do not seem inspired by it.
