Summary
DescriptionAtticN4Det.jpg |
English: Evidence of Commodus's damnatio in the "Clementia" panel of the Arch of Constantine. The center of three standards in the photo (an imago) holds two portrait images. The uppermost of these is in good condition, but the face on the lower one is completely worn or chiseled away. Differential erosion seems unlikely as a cause, given its position in the panel and the relative integrity of the image above it. The subject of the lower portrait appears to be cuirassed and includes a paludamentum, the cloak worn by a Roman general. The two portraits probably originally showed Marcus Aurelius and Commodus, with Commodus having been intentionally obliterated. |
