| Description |
English: The M1 Garand was the standard service rifle for all U.S. forces during the Second World War. It was the first semi-automatic rifle to be employed on a large scale. Semi-automatic means that the weapon does not have to be manualy reloaded after each shot. Instead, the mechanism of the rifle does this automatically as long as there are rounds in the magazine. This meant that more shots could be fired in a shorter period of time; a major advantage on the battlefield. Photographed in the collection of the National Liberation Museum 1944-1945.
Nederlands: De M1 Garand was het standaard dienstgeweer van de Amerikaanse strijdkrachten tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Het was het eerste semi-automatische geweer dat op grote schaal werd gebruikt. Dit betekende dat het geweer niet na elk schot handmatig moest worden geladen maar dat het mechanisme van het geweer dit deed totdat het magazijn leeg was. Dit zorgde ervoor dat er meer schoten konden worden gelost in een kortere periode, een belangrijk voordeel tijdens een gevecht.
