Question

[edit]

One question, are art galleries and art centers considered museums? Well I recently did an article about an art center in Al Ain. I used the museum infobox for the article, since other articles about art centers on Wikipedia use this infobox, an example are the articles on Arlington Arts Center and Woodruff Arts Center. Bkissin who accepted my draft placed the Wikiproject Museums banner on the talk page and placed the "Museums in the United Arab Emirates" category. I plan to do an article on the Nairobi Gallery in Kenya, and I wonder if I should place the museums infobox for that article.-Seb { 💬 Talk + 📝 Edits } 00:29, 10 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

A museum is normally distinguished by a permanent collection of objects. The AlQattara Arts Centre apparently has "a small museum in which archaeological artifacts are stored", so would seem to qualify. —Jonathan Bowen (talk) 14:43, 10 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Jpbowen: By the way, I found an image on Flickr that has a license compatible with Wikipedia, should I place this image in the article Al Qattara Arts Centre?-Seb { 💬 Talk + 📝 Edits } 21:30, 10 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That should be fine if you follow all the "rules"! —Jonathan Bowen (talk) 21:39, 10 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Jpbowen: Thank you very much for adding categories to the Al Qattara Arts Center article, could you do the same for the Skifa Kahla article? Skifa Kahla is a fortification in Mahdia, Tunisia. In the Al Qattara Arts Center article I added two sources in Arabic, they explain a little about the construction of the Al Qattara fort, its construction dates back to the Iron Age.-Seb { 💬 Talk + 📝 Edits } 17:11, 12 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

IGI Global

[edit]

Deb (talk) 16:11, 9 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

For information, I have published with IGI Global in the past, but not since 2011, ten years ago. I am unlikely to again with the controversy around the company. I have never been paid by IGI Global and I have never paid them any money (e.g. for publication). I do not know anyone in the company and I have not contacted them since 2011. In my recent edits of Draft:IGI Global, I have added a "Controversy" section with references, that I believe makes the company "notable" in Wikipedia terms. In the past, some Wikipedia editors have been actively hostile to the company, accusing it of being a "vanity publishing" company and using this as a reason for it to be removed from Wikipedia. However, given that I have never paid any money to the company, this is not my experience. In any case, this is orthogonal to arguments for or against whether it should be on Wikipedia. In fact, I believe the number of independent references generated by the controversy means that it should be on Wikipedia. And I believe that the fact that I have not been in contact with the company for ten years means that I am sufficiently independent for there not to be any serious WP:COI. —Jonathan Bowen (talk) 12:47, 11 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Jpbowen. I am Diannaa and I am a Wikipedia administrator. While normally it's okay to copy from one Wikipedia article to another (as long as proper attribution is provided), it's not okay to paste content from a deleted article into an extant article. That's because the attribution has been lost - the list of contributors in the article history is a record of everyone who contributed to the article, and we need that list to fulfill the "attribution" part of our Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License. Sorry but I have had to remove your addition to Virtual Library museums pages for that reason. — Diannaa (talk) 01:12, 28 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Jpbowen, wondered if you could give your wiki thoughts on this draft: Draft:Department of Biology, University of Oxford. I work for the Uni so I have a COI, but the Department was just launched to replace the old departments of Zoology and Plant Sciences, so I have taken content from there and been as objective as possible when creating the page. 48jkb35m (talk) 16:11, 12 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@48jkb35m the issue seems to be that the department is so new that there are no adequate independent references yet. Has the opening of the department been covered in newspapers, magazines or journals? These would help. otherwise, it would be best to include information on the new department under sections in the pages on the two old departments until the new department has sufficient independent coverage. I hope this helps. 86.187.225.140 (talk) 19:13, 15 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings!

[edit]

Hi there Prof. Bowen. I came across a bunch of documents with your name on them, outlining microprocessors, their pinouts, and instructions sets -- all formatted neatly in ASCII and with scripts to create PostScript and PDF outputs. These have come in handy many times over the last few years as I work with some vintage equipment, and when I found out who you actually were I had to stop by and say hello, and thanks for your excellent work from circa 1985!

Cheers, MrAureliusRTalk! 18:45, 17 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Portrait of Count Stanislas Potocki by David

[edit]

Hello Jonathan! I saw that you have made some really valuable contributions to WP Visual Arts and I am looking for editors interested in collaborating on Portrait of Count Stanislas Potocki, a painting by Jacques-Louis David from 1781. The article has been mostly abandoned for the last two years and I would love to bring it to GA or FA level, though due to academic writing commitments, I might be unable to do it on my own any time soon. And feel free to recommend someone else if this is not something you would be interested in participating. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts! Many thanks. Your contributed article, University don

[edit]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Hello, I noticed that you recently created a new page, University don. First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as you. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page – Don (academia). Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will continue helping to improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at Don (academia). If you have new information to add, you might want to discuss it at the article's talk page.

If you think the article you created should remain separate, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Try not to be discouraged. Wikipedia looks forward to your future contributions. -- NotCharizard 🗨 13:19, 15 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Applied Science University, Bahrain.jpeg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Applied Science University, Bahrain.jpeg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on Nina Carroll requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, images, a rephrasing of the title, a question that should have been asked at the help or reference desks, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

Hallo, I noticed that in creating Oxford Women Students' Society for Women's Suffrage you linked to the dab page Hyde Park. I've fixed the link. But here's a standard message I offer:

There is an easy way to avoid linking to disambiguation pages: if you go to "Preferences", "Gadgets", and look under "Appearance" you'll see "Display links to disambiguation pages in orange" towards the bottom of the section. Select that tickbox, and whenever you Preview a page you'll be able to see whether you've accidentally linked to a disambiguation page. Thanks, and Happy Editing.

(I came to the page because it links to a page I created so I got a notification, then spotted the orange link!) PamD 19:24, 26 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the tip, I have followed your advice! —Jonathan Bowen (talk) 10:29, 27 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Glad to be of use. I find it a really helpful way to get things right (or less wrong). PamD 11:00, 27 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Your addition to Oxford Society for Women's Suffrage has been removed or altered, as it appears to closely paraphrase a copyrighted source. Limited close paraphrasing or quotation is appropriate within reason, so long as the material is clearly attributed in the text. However, longer paraphrases, especially if they are not attributed to their source, may constitute copyright violation or plagiarism, and are not acceptable on Wikipedia. Such content cannot be hosted here for legal reasons; please do not post it on any page, even if you plan to fix it later. You may use external websites or printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If you own the copyright to the text, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use it — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the copyright but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. Thank you. GreenLipstickLesbian (talk) 20:03, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Because close paraphrasing is sometimes hard to catch yourself doing, please view the automated flagging of this edit by our CopyPatrol system. If you connect your account to it, you should be able to view something called an "iThenticate" report. This highlights all the shared words that the computer spotted. It's not always very smart (it sometimes flags proper nouns and lists of names) but in this case, large amounts of the underlying sentence structure, the author's comparasions and links they made between facts, and original vocabulary remained intact.
I've also had a look at one of your recently created articles, Gunfield. I haven't examined it thoroughly, but I am already seeing some similarities that are making me concerned. For example,
The article: In the 1930s, a low single-storey service space and garage with a rectangular gazebo roof was added to the front of the former chapel (later a music room), and the existing chapel window was reconfigured
The source: In the 1930s a low single-storey service space and garage with a rectangular gazebo roof was added to the front of the MCR and the existing chapel window was reconfigured.
The article: A link to the chapel was added in 1915 by Arthur Hamilton Moberly. A three-storey loggia onto the rear garden was also built by Moberly at the same time.
The source:A link to the chapel was added in 1915 by Arthur Hamilton Moberly. The three-storey loggia onto the garden was also built by Moberly at this time.
I know this isn't a pleasant message to receive, but would you consider voluntarily giving up your autopatrolled rights at Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Autopatrolled or by asking an administrator directly? I can ping one for you, if you'd like. I believe your new creations would strongly benefit review by the new page patrollers, so they can help prevent this issue from re-occuring. It won't have any impact on you or the way you create articles- it just allows for a second pair of eyes to ensure that Wikipedia can comply with its non free content policies.
GreenLipstickLesbian (talk) 20:23, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for spotting this. I am normally more careful with paraphrasing, but I think I hit the save button too early for these cases. I see that you have edited Oxford Society for Women's Suffrage. I have now edited Gunfield, based on your comments above. Let me know if you spot any more issues. I will be more careful in future! —Jonathan Bowen (talk) 15:11, 29 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, tell me about it- it's one of those things I think a lot of people fall prone to! And thank you for fixing the Gunfield article- I'm going to have a more in-depth look at it this weekend, but don't let me stop you from double-checking it yourself!
That being said, recent cases of close paraphrasing issues does disqualify anybody from either holding or receiving the autopatrolled right. I've opened a thread on ANI asking for somebody to pull it. It's not a sanction, and, again, will have no impact on the way you create articles. It'll just send them through the New Pages queue for others to look at. GreenLipstickLesbian (talk) 22:01, 30 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
