Huna page

[edit]

Dear Makana,

The Huna page seems balanced and informative to me. The only thing I'd want to fix is the list of references at the bottom. If it's a book, the title should be in italics. We make italics by putting two single quotes before the word/title and two single quotes at the end. We should also include the publisher, the publication date, perhaps the place of publication and ISBN. The latter two aren't always included, but it helps when they are, if there's any question about how to find the book. I know that there's a special formatting to use for references, which I should be using, but I don't. However, most references in WP don't use that special formatting.

I'm taking a Hawaiian language class at HCC, from Kimo Keaulana, and having a great time. He's so much fun; he could be a successful stand-up comic! Zora 09:13, 28 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Research

[edit]

That's cool, Makana. I'd be glad to expand the principles with concepts like mana and the aka body, and use of will/hypnotism. Good luck finding more about the Kahili family. Serge King has many books on Amazon, some in German. Will let you know when I find stuff. About the huna shamans today, do you know if there's much that's not totally mediated by Long? or is there more that's kept secret? Julia Rossi 00:49, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again. I guess I was trying to sort out the differences between systems and the original spiritual practice of (can we still call it) huna. The Kahili family so far seems what Serge King reports about his own life. I guess that's what you've got too, from his bio page via google. And he quickly incorporates his years of experience in West Africa and shamanism in general towards his "peacekeeping" role. I feel there's a slight problem with the western positioning of all that in one bag, unless that's a "new age" technique. I think it's under Kahuna that I ramble on about ways of sectioning the topic so his or other subsequent models don't pull it out of shape. See what you think. (PS, Does pono mean "legit"?) Anyway, it's so cool to have a specialist (as you must be) on the job. Cheers, Julia Rossi 09:22, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
PPS–Oops I just went there myself (& to Talk:Huna) and need to read your reply. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Julia Rossi (talkcontribs) 09:24, 17 October 2007 (UTC) Julia Rossi 09:30, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Aloha. Any chance you can add a page number to the cite you added to Kahuna? —Viriditas | Talk 00:39, 19 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It would be this edit, although notice that I've cleaned it up and left a "page" field where you can add page numbers. On another note, another Wikipedian has moved Kaula to Kaʻula claiming that the esoteric branch of Kashmir Shaivism is more notable than the island. I don't think this is correct. From what I can tell, the majority of English speakers, when searching for "Kaula" will be looking for the Hawaiian Island not the religion. What do you think? —Viriditas | Talk 00:38, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I find the information you've added to Talk:Kahuna very interesting and informative, and would love to see it in the main article. As long as it can be adequately sourced directly to references that discuss the Kahuna (which is what it looks like you've done) then it isn't WP:OR. Visit that link to learn more. As for listing churches in Huna, see Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies) and Wikipedia:External links. If you have doubts about any of these churches meeting notability or external links guidelines, let me know. —Viriditas | Talk 13:51, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation

[edit]

Aloha! You look like someone who might be interested in joining the Hawaii WikiProject and so I thought I'd drop you a line and invite you! We'd love to have you help us :-) Your experience and knowledge is essential to the success of this project. Viriditas (talk) 10:24, 16 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Great! I would like to talk to you about the articles you are currently working on or watchlisting, and how the project can help focus on your area to provide resources and support. Viriditas (talk) 09:41, 17 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for getting back to me. What we need is for someone to keep an eye on the articles listed in Category:Hawaii culture. That seems to be your interest (correct me if I'm wrong), so I'm wondering if you might be interested in expanding your focus. Do you know if you already have this link saved? That's a link to the current watchlist for all Hawaii articles, however it is in the process of being updated, so there are many new articles that haven't been added just yet. What I was thinking about doing, is breaking down the watchlist into subtopics, to make it easier for members to watch articles that interest them. I'm going to do this for the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands task force, and I'm hoping we can do the same with the Hawaiian culture-related articles. We have a newsletter coming out in May. You can read the April issue to get an idea of what we're doing. We're trying to put the new issue together here, so if you want to talk about any of the articles you are watching, or bring any of these topics to the attention of other members in the newsletter, please feel free to do so. The focus of May's issue is supposed to be List of English words of Hawaiian origin, so if you have anything to say about that article and how the project can improve it, that would be helpful. A direct link to the newsletter itself is on that page. More later. Viriditas (talk) 21:11, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Would you also be interested in working some more on Cuisine of Hawaii, particularly with BorgQueen and I? Viriditas (talk) 22:35, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I made the changes you recommended. Regarding the newsletter, you can take a look at the News Bureau, add suggested items to the list, make comments on the talk page, or edit the May issue directly. Your participation is encouraged. Viriditas (talk) 08:50, 20 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hawaiian religion

[edit]

Hi. You made a request for help on the general project page regarding Hawaiian religion. I went ahead and added it as a featured story proposal for the July newsletter. Feel free to add some more ideas or help work on the current newsletter. Viriditas (talk) 14:21, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just wanted to add that I'd be glad to help out wherever possible on improving that article this month. Given the wide scope of the content, I don't think a GA would be out of reach.... --jonny-mt 01:51, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I need to throw a bunch of stuff up there that we could start with. I don't know how to do a sandbox so I will just put it on the talk page. All help desperately needed. GA sounds great! Makana Chai (talk) 09:13, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sure. You can try one of two things: Create /Hawaiian religion in your user space, or Talk:Hawaiian religion/Temp. See also: WP:SP. Viriditas (talk) 02:16, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK check out Talk:Hawaiian religion/Temp It needs a lot of work but at least now there is something to edit :-) Mahalo. Makana Chai (talk) 19:13, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good! I won't be able to copy edit until Sun/Mon. Should I add Malo and Kamakau as refs? Viriditas (talk) 12:34, 8 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
"Kāhuna nui mandated long periods when the entire village must have absolute silence. No baby could cry, dog howl, or rooster crow, on pain of death." No rooster could crow? How do you control that? :) Viriditas (talk) 13:13, 8 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, do add Malo and Kamakau. They shut up the roosters in a calabash! Makana Chai (talk) 06:26, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not too shabby! It could use some cleanup and reorganization, but there's a lot of information there that we can start from. Feel free to copy it over to the main article if you'd like and we can get cracking--shouldn't be a problem to get a DYK by the end of the week. --jonny-mt 07:21, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wow thanks! I can't do anything with this right now, except watch it a bit. I just got notice I need to do a major re-write on my book that I thought was done. But please have at it! Mahalo. Makana Chai (talk) 07:49, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rollback

[edit]

Actually, after leaving my message above about Hawaiian religion, I took a quick look through your contributions and noticed that you have a good record of reverting obvious vandalism. As such, I've gone ahead and given you rollback rights so you can do this faster in the future--give it a try at Wikipedia:New admin school/Rollback. If you'd rather not have it, just let me know and I'll take it off. Mahalo! --jonny-mt 01:57, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I will wear it as a badge of honor. Mahalo! Makana Chai (talk) 09:15, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Liliuokalani

[edit]

Your right the queen didn't use okina nor did any Hawaiian royalty. So mostly when I create articles I tried titling without okina or hyphens. Check out this name Kualiilanipipililanioakaiakunuiakealuanuuokuiialiiikahalau could it be longest name ever or are there longer ones. KAVEBEAR (talk) 07:11, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Do you know anything about the a list of the Alii Aimoku of the island of Molokai? I always thought Molokai was subjected to Oahu or Maui, but turn out it isn't the case. KAVEBEAR (talk) 00:07, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Molokai was definitely independent. I suggest you read Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs, Tales & Traditions, and People of Old, as well as Malo. I'm sure you'll find the answers in one of those. This is not my area of expertise, sorry! Makana Chai (talk) 02:30, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

To-do list for Hawaiian religion

[edit]

I'm going to start a to-do list on Talk:Hawaiian religion so we can distribute the tasks and get this to GA before the end of the month. Please add tasks as needed. Viriditas (talk) 08:52, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. When you get a chance, can you determine if this article is notable enough for Wikipedia? If it isn't, I'll go ahead and nominate it for deletion. Thanks. Viriditas (talk) 12:44, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think he meets the notability requirements. I did feel I had to remove the category Hawaiian writers as he has not written his book yet. But with his honors, awards and leadership positions, he is certainly notable. I added the one reference I know of right now and will look for some newspaper articles. It occurs to me the Hokulea article could be improved by listing everyone who was on every voyage, or at least the first few ones. OK I just added the first voyage members. Makana Chai (talk) 13:46, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hokule'a Crew

[edit]

Nice work putting in the names of the crew on Hokulea. I left a message on the Hokule'a talk page; it would be great if you could check it out. Here's a synopsis. As I read the names on the list, it struck me that a number of these people have died in recent years; since most of the crew don't have their own Wiki pages, it's hard to find out any more about them. Perhaps it would be appropriate and respectful to show next to their names something like Rodo Williams (Tahiti; b. 1927, d. 2006), etc. I don't know the dates, though. What do you think? Roma stereotypes

[edit]

There are, unfortunately, worse articles on Wikipedia than the one we've been discussing. See here for examples. Most Roma/Romani related pages have not recently suffered sustained attack from IPs. That was not always the case. I would be a bit concerned that an effort to 'de-Orientalise' that article could mean a lot of fire-fighting across different pages .for limited gain, with certain people getting up on their hind legs and screaming 'censorship'. RashersTierney (talk) 20:36, 18 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Agree we don't want to step in it. But it's just so non-useful now. I would really like to know if there are any relatively authentic fictional accounts of Romani, so I could read them! And some of what's there is such dreck - a "gypsy" shows up as a plot device and that is given equal weight to Carmen? But I do have a life so maybe we should just leave it alone.Makana Chai (talk) 22:12, 18 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Alright, you seem to be knowledgeable about this subject, I was wondering if I can upload photographs belonging the:

  • Hawaiian Historical Society
  • Archives of Hawaii

Are they still under copyright protection?

I won’t use the photos from Bishop museum.

Hawaii Samurai (talk) 01:52, 18 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The short answer is I don't know. It's not just copyright, they take the position that they own and control the use of these images. I just today went to the Bishop Museum Archives and paid a lot of money and jumped through hoops to get two images for my next book. I looked just now at the websites of both orgs and don't see the answers. I suggest you contact them by phone and ask. Good luck! Let me know what you find out. Here are their websites.

Article to edit

[edit]

Hi Makana, I joined wikipedia last Oct. 2009 and haven't accomplish a whole lot yet and I'm still pretty green when it comes to this and even took off the last two months doing another project, but the first article I started to work on an edit for was on the article "Forgiveness". It's been on my watchlist for 6 months now and you have been the only one doing any type of edit's or clean up. Other editor's had said on the dicussion page that the page lacked; "specifics about research being done on forgiveness" & "It lacks non-religious perspectives". So I started a page called user:Tinkermen/SandboxF and started gathering information about the topic article out side of religion that I could find, like what kind of research and study's have taken place or are being undertaken ect. I haven't looked at any of my notes in months, but would like to start taking a look at this some time soon and was wondering if I could get you involved with me to make some determinations as to what we might be able to make out of all the notes I have taken or if this should even be attempted? You can always leave me a message on that pages dicussion page. There's so much information out there in reguards to this subject, so narrowing it down as to what to do or add to this article is something I'd like to have another editor's assistance with. My name is John Francis by the way. Tinkermen (talk) 06:38, 13 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hawaii edit-a-thon!

[edit]

Hello. I'm interested in attempting to put together an edit-a-thon for Hawaiian cultural topics something during the Makahiki festival perhaps around the month of November. The hope is that our lackluster coverage of Hawaiian mythology could be improved with help from the Bishop Museum, Hawaii Pacific University, and the Honolulu public library. I am in the process of making initial contacts with these organizations as well as Wikimedia DC's GLAM project. If this sounds like something you might be interested in participating in, or perhaps helping to coordinate, could you please add your name to 2014 Makahiki Edit-a-thon?--v/r - TP 07:46, 10 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Looking for editors to help with an Asian Pacific American edit-a-thon in Honolulu

[edit]
On Oahu? Edit Wikipedia or Wikimedia sister projects? You are invited to help the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center with an Asian Pacific American edit-a-thon in Honolulu this September.

Aloha!

Last summer I moved to the Seattle area after 14 years in Kailua on Oahu. I immediately fell in with the Cascadia Wikimedians User Group as it formed, joined its board and became its first president as well as the GLAM representative for Washington State.

Recently, Adriel Luis, Curator (Digital & Emerging Media) at the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, contacted me about setting up an edit-a-thon like the previous Wikipedia APA edit-a-thon. In addition to discussing one for Seattle, he wrote:

As I was working two jobs while I lived on Oahu, I did not have the opportunity to meet your or any other Wikipedians at the time. Hence, the reason why I am contacting you now.

If you would like to help, please contact me through one of these methods:
