Hi Doc, Many thanks for your thoughts on Live and Let Die at the recent (talk page) peer review. The article is now at FAC for wider consideration should you wish to comment further. Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 09:31, 1 April 2015 (UTC)

I've known about WP:Dramaboard for a while, but that's just the tip of the iceberg .... I've compiled a list of silly shortcuts I can find. Do you know any more? Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 18:03, 1 April 2015 (UTC)

Okay so I'm going over the back log of articles long tagged for notability (which quite a few are now getting AFD and Prod) and I found this one you made Zoumboulaki Gallery, I am iffy if this should be userfied or what? since you created it maybe you could have some input! Hoverfish might answer that one, probably a dud but give it a few days.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:09, 1 April 2015 (UTC)

Something for you

[edit]

File:Tower House peacock cabinet.jpg I rambled long enough to find the only photo the Library of Congress has online from TH. Think this is the missing escritoire from the dining room. This is the peacock cabinet. From what I can see, there's a similarly styled piece of furniture in it. What's good about this is its size allows a good look at some of the artwork on the walls. This is also a good look at the piece itself. The problem with LOC is that if they have it and it's not online, they are charging US$30 per page or photo copy. Dr. Blofeld, among the remarks RO removed from her page after her block were those of Victoriaearle, who asked that RO stop pinging her.[1]

I urge you to respect this request. Perhaps you're not fully aware of what she's been through, or you wouldn't have pinged her to RO's talk. You are risking losing Victoriaearle from the project altogether.

Also, the six month's block was part of the deal with Coffee. His unblocking of her nearly resulted in an arbcom case to desop him. Only his promise that he would response instantly if she broke her promise prevented that from happening. Thanks, EChastain (talk) 21:48, 3 April 2015 (UTC)

@EChastain: Yes, but compare RO's last 500 edits to one of the drama regulars on here, she's far more productive. I don't want to lose Victoria either, but I think an interaction ban would be a better solution between them, although it doesn't solve the issue of how to control RO's behaviour in the long term. Imagine Eric had been blocked for six months for that for instance.♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:55, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
Just some issues regarding RO's last 500 edits for perspective. Compare RO's first 1000 or so edits, which were mostly to policy pages, drama boards and other shit stirring for an account that started editing around 1 September 2014, and an SPI Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Jazzerino reported on 6 December. Note: RO trashed Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Xx (album)/archive1 before 26 October and Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Xx (album)/archive2 before 19 December.

More recently, hassling articles by Victoriaeale's [2] about Saint Francis Receiving the Stigmata (van Eyck), arguments on why she's not a sockpuppet[3] on Anthonyhcole's talk (3 March). And her recent edits to Talk:Donner Party. Then note that she's made 1154 edits to Irataba, 1045 edits to Chetro Ketl, 524 edits to Rose–Baley Party.

I agree that RO is "trying". Hence the high volume of mostly insignificant edtis to articles. Irataba's current status is due to outside intervention by you and other helpful editors. Without those intervention, it would be in the same state as Rose–Baley Party (Talk:Rose–Baley Party shows continuing close paraphrasing concerns). Victoriaearle was essentially banned by RO from editing the page or even offering suggestions on talk. EChastain (talk) 20:52, 4 April 2015 (UTC)

Imagine if I had Dr. Blofeld. I've never pleaded to be unblocked, or made deals. I'd simply sit out the block, as I've always done. Eric Corbett 21:07, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
You might Eric but imagine the outrage from most of us!! Fair point EChastain about RO's earlier edits being drama boards. As I say below that's already suspicious!♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:09, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
FWIW I think that six months is too severe, even though I don't believe that RO has been entirely honest. Eric Corbett 21:13, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
Most generous from you, Eric Corbett, considering she tried a ds sanction against you right after Lightbreather's successful one! You're demonstrating that a editor can be harassed and still be graceful in outlook. EChastain (talk) 21:46, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
  • I'm probably reading this all wrong but to me everyone seems to think/infer the "deal" was between Coffee and RO? As far as I'm aware Coffee promised DDstretch (the Admin whose block of RO was overturned) that any disruptive behaviour would result in an immediate six month block and placed a warning on her talk page to that effect? It wasn't open to negotiation from RO ... SagaciousPhil - Chat 09:54, 5 April 2015 (UTC) I can never work out how to thread these things properly!

Cheers SP, that makes a lot more more sense now. A flawed character, but articles like Chetro Ketl, Cairook and Seck-a-hoot look pretty decent to me, although one of the quotes in Seckahoot should be removed and rewritten in prose. They may well be riddled with errors or paraphrasing problems I don't know, but on the surface there looks like a considerable effort to produce content here, that's what matters to me. The problem though is that RO has difficulty controlling what she says to people and can't seem to avoid commenting at times, so beyond Victoria I can see it happening again and again. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:00, 5 April 2015 (UTC)

The relevant thread on Coffee's talk page is here. I've also just posted a note on his talk page linking the AN/I thread and linked to a note that DDstretch (the original blocking Admin) left on my talk page concerning it at the time. I cannot see any reason for RO making this edit other than following Victoria? As far as I can see RO had never edited the article or the talk page previously? I agree content is important and it's something I will normally always argue in support of but ... SagaciousPhil - Chat 10:20, 5 April 2015 (UTC) I can manage to thread this bit!
On 2 April, RO made 18 edits to Victoriaearle's talk. That's beyond reason, especially since RO had just deleted Victoriaearle's post to her page. How can this be rationalised? EChastain (talk) 23:09, 5 April 2015 (UTC)
Yes, especially after I asked her to avoid certain people.♦ Dr. Blofeld 05:54, 6 April 2015 (UTC)
  • My concern is this: Being prolific is not in itself an asset unless the activity produces quality content, if it produces problems for others to solve then the working at a fast pace is actually worse than working slowly. For example, I had planned working on different projects this week but saw myself having to take care of problems with the Irataba article instead, because the process was hurried through. As for RO I am concerned that they might not be as inexperienced as they claim - it if is the for example case that they are an experienced FA editor such as GabeMC then that would make me feel very silly for having spent so much of my time trying to help RO out as I would have with someone who is truly a newbie and needs the support and mentoring. An experienced editor should and could be held to a higher set of expectations for selfsufficiency than someone trying to write their first major FA article. ·maunus · snunɐɯ· 18:45, 8 April 2015 (UTC)

Who writes the article is irrelevant IMO. If I was worried about that I'd not have touched this with a bargepole based on her history of conflict with the others. I have a fair experience with FAC and I'd not have nominated it if I didn't think it was near FA quality. It's great that you're on board and have considerably further improved it, but please don't imply you're only doing this on a whim for RO. You love the subject like myself, and it would be great to get such a figure up to FA status. That's what matters. RO could have a sock farm the size of Pennsylvania, it makes no difference to me in promoting an article to FA. So long as the information is accurate and editors can collaborate in promoting a worthy subject.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:56, 8 April 2015 (UTC)

Of course, I was not referring to the article work which I do because I want the article to achieve the highest possible quality. Rather i was referring to my attempts to mediate and educate RO them inthe disputes they had gotten themselves into. If it turns out that RO is a well experienced editor then that energy would have been better spent focusing solely on the article. As I have said here before, I do assume good faith untill I have evidence to the contrary, but this would not be the first time such good faith had been abused. I really dislike dissimulation and dishonesty, so if RO is for example GabeMC with whom I have had lots of interactions in the past that would really put me off from engaging with them again. Not from improving articles of course.·maunus · snunɐɯ· 19:12, 8 April 2015 (UTC)
I've also added a fair bit of material myself and am very experienced here, you're also helping me out as an expert on Native Americans. I find your input and approach most excellent and agree with what you say about context and painting a more colourful picture. It's important to produce the best possible article on this, we should all feel happy collaborating on this without feeling obligated. Yes, I see what you mean about that, I'd also like to think that RO is on the level. But I'd like to see some concrete proof of sockpuppetry.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:21, 8 April 2015 (UTC)
  • I find it impossible to believe that RO is a sock of GabeMc. Gabe was a fantastic editor whom I admired greatly. My thoughts on RO are, shall we say, not quite the same. In any case, they were/are of opposite sex. CassiantoTalk 21:44, 8 April 2015 (UTC)
I do see some similarities I must admit, enough to confuse me.·maunus · snunɐɯ· 22:11, 8 April 2015 (UTC)
@Maunus:, I agree with your comment: "Being prolific is not in itself an asset unless the activity produces quality content, if it produces problems for others to solve then the working at a fast pace is actually worse than working slowly." Best check every inch of Irataba for sourcing issues. The first versions were copy/pastes, just like Rose-Baley Party. I've seen the citations changed repeatedly, attributing the same info to other sources. Now it's so mixed up, with so many cooks stirring the broth, it may just have to be rewritten from scratch. EChastain (talk) 22:46, 9 April 2015 (UTC)
I basically have rewritten it from scratch. There is hardly any of the original text left, and what is there is verifiable in reliable sources.·maunus · snunɐɯ· 22:52, 9 April 2015 (UTC)
I still see a lot of text there, including a lot of material I added. Let's have some mutual respect here, this is a collaboration.♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:01, 10 April 2015 (UTC)
It wasn't the text, it was the OR/synthesis and misunderstanding of sources. Maunus gave the article some credibility by checking the sourcing but maybe he didn't like the experience. You may have noticed that editing Irataba resulted in a wikibreak for Maunus. EChastain (talk) 19:29, 27 April 2015 (UTC)
No I didn't notice, and it doesn't appear to be true. If anything I thought this disagreement with Rambling Man and the way the English language article was being attacked for its length got to him far more than Irataba did, even if he did admit he was fed up with the hostility between RO and Montana. Probably a healthy combination of them all told him it was time for a break.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:31, 27 April 2015 (UTC)

Responding

[edit]

In reply to your question on RO's talk page: The short answer is "I don't know". My understanding is that there was some sort of understanding between Coffee and RO which resulted in Coffee unblocking RO. I believe the terms were detailed at the time. However, I haven't had the time to follow in detail what has transpired, or the back-story to it. That's why I didn't feel comfortable in taking any administrative action in regards to the second unblock request. My post was simply a courtesy suggestion in regards to repeated unblock requests immediately after a block. I've seen it happen in the past where such things result in the loss of talk page privileges. Personally I am VERY much against removing ANY person's ability to post to their own talk page, but there are many others who feel differently. Sorry for the delay in responding. — Ched :  ?  01:06, 4 April 2015 (UTC)

FWIW, I think it is important that any unblocking administrator consider the material that RationalObserver has removed from her talk page, such as my comment linked here. While she has that right, it is, nonetheless, to be noted that what I had to say is highly relevant: [4]. Montanabw(talk) 02:32, 4 April 2015 (UTC)

@Ched:/@Montanabw: I'm always suspicious of people who start editing here with commenting on threads like the Jimbo-Eric one. I believe Amanda Smalls did the same thing and look what happened to her. I know RO has a lot of baggage and can't seem to avoid saying what she thinks to other editors but she has put in some decent work here. I dislike the way she removes detailed posts of others from her talk pages in particular, I've faced that myself. I know she's been accused of socking many times but I want actual proof that she is a sock of somebody, even if at times it might seem inevitable that she's edited here before. Compare the percentage of her last 500 edits to somebody like Tarc though for instance. It is clear who is more productive here. She's a lot more productive as an editor that a lot of people we have on here. My concern is that in six months we could be missing out on a good five GA quality articles from RO on Native American topics. I'm not sure this is the most productive way of dealing with RO. We badly need contributors, and a lot of us here are not exactly perfect ourselves.. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:51, 4 April 2015 (UTC)

@Coffee: Could you explain to me why 6 months was part of the "deal" here? Am I missing some arb case or something? I know you were heavily criticised for unblocking her last time, but a ban for half a year over this incident does seem rather extreme to me.♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:07, 4 April 2015 (UTC)

Ruth Martin (Lassie) is a GA!♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:10, 4 April 2015 (UTC)

If you look at the edit history, it was cleaned up by others. EChastain (talk) 21:20, 4 April 2015 (UTC)

Six-month block:

  • [5] promise to Coffee on 27 February after his unblock. (See "Considering your unblock")
  • [6] - "Unblock clarification requested" on Coffee's talk 27 February.
  • [7] - " IMO, I was unblocked because I promised to stop the disruptive behavior, not because I showed remorse." RO on 27 February
  • [8] Barnstar to Coffee reiterating promise to him on 28 February
  • [9] RO's edits were questioned before the block by Viriditas, she gave him a Barnstar, but he subsequetly unwatched her page. She repeatedly pleaded with him to help her again, but he ignored her.
  • [10] warned again before the block about her edits re Donner Party and personal attacks on Eric Corbett by me and DDStretch who performed the original block.

So she should have at least been careful and avoided putting Coffee in this position, considering all the opposition to his unblock and his risk of being desopped. EChastain (talk) 21:20, 4 April 2015 (UTC)

Thanks...

Congratulations!! You deserve about ten of these for writing and promoting it! Give me a few days, I still want to see if I can add anything for Castell Coch. We'll then open a PR and take to FAC once Tower has gone through.♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:48, 4 April 2015 (UTC)

Charles de Tolnay etc.

[edit]

Concerning the articles on Charles de Tolnay, Julius von Schlosser etc. may I ask you for a comment on the related talk pages and on [11]? Many thanks. Wikiwiserick (talk) 14:28, 4 April 2015 (UTC)

Sadly wikipedia is full of idiots adding tags to articles like this. I mean this is absurd. If you get this I recommend asking Aymatth2. If you're interested I think we're proposing something which stops new page patrollers tagging articles in this way.♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:51, 4 April 2015 (UTC)

@ User:Rhode Island Red If you're really an academic, I ask you to stop being a fool. Do you even know what BLP means? The guy is dead! [12] Stop plastering silly tags on new articles and leave people alone. You have no idea how annoying it is to create new articles and have people plastering tags all over them. They create a mess and put people off contributing.♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:57, 4 April 2015 (UTC)

Here is Rhode Island Red's comment from his talk page: [13]. The problem is that the activities of this user haven't changed much for years. Just some examples: Talk:HA_Schult/Archives/2012/August, Talk:HA_Schult/Archives/2012/September, Talk:HA_Schult/Archives/2013/April, and Talk:Gotthard_Graubner. Do you have an idea how to handle this case? Wikiwiserick (talk) 15:24, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
I say take him to arb ;-). Ask Aymatth2 and DGG what to do. When you encounter a individual who happily slops tags on decent new articles and then cries WP:CIVIL, WP:TROLL etc when questioned, you know you've found a difficult person to deal with.. If he is a repeat offender to newbies and slopping inappropriate tags then you might gather together evidence of his misconduct and start a thread and proposal to ban him from patrolling new pages at WP:ANI if he's going to be a problem. I and I'm sure a few others would willingly support. I think something in the wider context should be passed preventing people from slopping tags on articles for at least 24 hours and this sort of bullying and ignorance reduced as much as possible.♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:58, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
Now this user thinks that you are a sockpuppet of me, because I have added your opinion to the talk page. See Talk:Julius von Schlosser. Wikiwiserick (talk) 20:34, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
LOL, he's even more of a moron than I'd originally guessed!♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:36, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
@Wikiwiserick: You can paste google book urls into here, saves time, oh of course you already knew that as we're the same person, right? :-)♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:41, 4 April 2015 (UTC)

Have you ever bothered to read WP:TC? It states: "Cleanup tags are meant to be temporary notices that lead to an effort to fix the problem, not a permanent badge of shame to show that you disagree with the article or a method of warning the readers against the article." Apparently you have your own interpretation of what a cleanup tag means. You also seem to have a highly skewed notion of WP:CIVIL. You might be able to salvage a shard of dignity by immediately apologizing for the "moron" comment. Rhode Island Red (talk) 00:23, 5 April 2015 (UTC)

Rhode Island Red, you need to seriously listen to what you are being told - stop slapping on nonsense tags and attacking other editors. Your conduct is unbecoming and will lead to a block if you don't choose to behave differently. Time to drop the stick and move on. Montanabw(talk) 08:31, 5 April 2015 (UTC)

Yes, a moron, as evidenced by this hilarious accusation of sockpuppetry, adding biography of living people tags to deceased persons [14] and this shockingly poor judgement here. That's moronic behaviour for an editor, especially for one who claims to be an academic. If you think you're more intelligent, start acting wiser eh? There is absolutely no excuse for adding a notability tag at that stage when he clearly meets GNG. He's not only weak notable he's an essential in his field but you failed to recognize this. Even if you weren't convinced a quick google book search would show you. Your tagging is disruptive and intrusive and if you continue I'll be requesting that you're banned from patrolling pages based on a long history of edit warring and disruption [15][16][17][18][19][20][21].. We'll see then who has "dignity". What makes this worse is that this isn't even a new article, an editor has attempted to improve the article and within 20 minutes you're there slopping tags and trying to impede progress. To me it looks a classic case of stalking/old grudges here actually. See this (you turned up in 20 minutes after he started editing it) and your history of warring with this editor. Have some respect for contributors and it might be reciprocated.♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:15, 5 April 2015 (UTC)

I have now tried to improve the article on Max Dvořák. I hope it reads, but you may have a look. No tags have been added so far. ;-) Wikiwiserick (talk) 20:05, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

There is currently another user adding tags to multiple articles. See, for instance, Warburg Haus, Hamburg and [22]. Wikiwiserick (talk) 20:38, 11 April 2015 (UTC)

Well, I agree with the tag for unsourced, it should be sourced, but it looks notable. Avoid creating new articles without sources.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:43, 11 April 2015 (UTC)

There are three references in the "External links" section. These sources include much information. Wikiwiserick (talk) 20:52, 11 April 2015 (UTC)
Articles have to have inline citations so readers can verify what fact is attributed to what.♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:53, 12 April 2015 (UTC)
Thanks. As you can see, I have now added several inline citations. Wikiwiserick (talk) 12:18, 12 April 2015 (UTC)

Ravel and jazz

[edit]

Noting your remark on the PR page, I strongly recommend the ravishing Piano Concerto in G major. The jazz influence is stronger in the later Violin Sonata, but I can't stand the piece. I think Ravel wrote it to put old smoothies like me off. Tim riley talk 16:23, 4 April 2015 (UTC)

Yes, I can imagine the incorporation of jazz and off key notes really annoying a lot of classical traditionalists!♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:36, 4 April 2015 (UTC)

Listening to it now, did you check out BWV 998? I will learn the whole thing!♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:43, 4 April 2015 (UTC)

I can't believe that I almost missed this big, sexy hook opportunity. Also, better news coming out of Mongolia today, looks like I may get to go back soon. --kelapstick(bainuu) 18:38, 5 April 2015 (UTC)

Excellent, now that is very impressive. My personal best is about 100 lbs less than that I think! I'm not so much into weights any longer though although I still like to keep fit. 300 is a very respectable lift, near 400 is starting to get into pro territory. Good to hear from you BTW!♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:49, 5 April 2015 (UTC)

I wouldn't hazard a guess at what I could bench, but nowhere near that. I wonder if we could have List of sitting heads of state and government by lift capacity. First of all, I didn't just restore it, I reverted your undoing of my additions, and then in accordance with your suggestions shortened it afterwards. I see no reason for anyone to take it through FAR (and hello, this is just one sentence, why making so much of a big deal because of it instead of discussing things properly and coming to common decisions?), this doesn't scare me if that was the intention (coming from you this sounded a bit like a manipulative act of deterrence, and actually this article is your success as it is mine so it should be important to you as well, mind you), and actually in my view it remains the best-researched article on an Indian actress among the many others added to the list recently (especially after my additions recently). If you feel it is not of FA quality, feel free to take it there yourself. I know how much effort I've put into this article, including my recent research which I worked a lot of time on. WP is an ongoing project, there's no such thing as complete or perfect. The thing is - you stopped replying to my messages and I thought you actually accepted the latest version of the sentence.

You know how much I value your opinion and especially your writing skills. Then again I disagree her opinion about herself does not matter in a section analysing her media image. Having said that, I have changed the sentence now, though I think the word resilient does not really properly fit here. "Tough" and "resilient" have different meanings. The idea of the sentence, however, was to convey her steadfast determination to fight for what's right and show how undeterred she is by controversy in regard to this. Anyway, now it reads as "While she does not believe she is "as tough as people portray [her] to be," she asserts having no qualms about speaking her mind, even if faced with surmounting opposition, as long as she stands "by what's right." I think it's short and straight to the point, what do you say now? ShahidTalk2me 19:47, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

Heitor Villa-Lobos

[edit]

I daresay, for the most part. Though I suspect there are some smaller pieces, for guitar mostly, that probably are too minor to warrant articles on their own. If you're on a Villa-Lobos kick, here's another article I've been meaning to get around to someday: George W. Hufsmith. Hufsmith was an insurance salesman who was Villa-Lobos' only pupil, as I recall. He lived in Wyoming and wrote at least one opera on a local subject, and served in the state House of Representatives for six years as well. Interesting fellow.

Still on the road, but I've had some fruitful gallery visits and am developing ideas for a whole mess of articles when I get home... --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 21:23, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

@Gerda Arendt. One thing I'll never forget is how good you've been to me over the years on here. You're a shining beacon of a goodwill on the site beyond this infobox thing. But until you can show that you fully respect the views of those who promote articles to FA who otherwise you treat as friends and leave them be, then I really find it difficult to continue treating you with the respect and goodwill we've always shared. I appreciate that you nominated the Tower House for TFA, but when weeks down the road you'll be there with your "intelligent" friend Alakzi and co with the same old grief and time wasting with "proposing" infoboxes on promoted articles it makes it look as if there's two different Gerdas on here which I really find difficult to deal with. That sort of thing overshadows a lot of the acts of goodwill you otherwise do on here. What I've seen from you in recent weeks has so affected my perception of you that it's often difficult now for me to see the good in what you do and I'm starting to question if you're genuine. I'm being as honest as I can be on this. I think you're lucky that some of the others are willing to overlook it. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:47, 8 April 2015 (UTC)

It seems there's quite a bit about the vineyards, which operated for some time. First let me get the many articles about the vineyards clipped and uploaded to a OneDrive folder for reference. British Goblins: Welsh Folk-lore, Fairy Mythology, Legends and Traditions Wirt Sikes, S. Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington, 1880, pp 390-391
"In the legend of Castell Coch, instead of a raven it is a pair of huge eagles which watch the treasure. Castell Coch is an easy and pleasant two hours' walk from Cardiff Castle, with which it is vulgarly believed to be connected by a subterranean passage. A short time ago—well, to be precise, a hundred years ago, but that is no time at all in the history of Castell Coch, which was a crumbling ruin then as it is now1 —in or about the year 1780, a reduced lady was allowed to fit up three or four rooms in the ruin as a residence, and to live there with two old servants of her house. One night this lady was awakened from her sleep to receive the visit of a venerable ghost in a full dress-suit of an earlier century, who distressed her by his troubled countenance and vexed her by his eccentric behaviour, for when she spoke to him from the depths of her nightcap he at once got through the wall. He came on subsequent nights so often, and frightened the servants so much by the noise he made—in getting through the wall, of course—that the lady gave up her strange abode, and was glad to pay house rent ever after in other parts. This old ghost was in the flesh proprietor of the castle, it appears, and during the civil wars buried an iron chest full of gold in the subterranean passage—which is still there, guarded by two large eagles. A party of gentlemen who somewhere about 1800 attempted to explore the passage saw the eagles, and were attacked by the birds of freedom so fiercely that they retreated in disorder. Subsequently they returned with pistols and shot the eagles, which resented this trifling impertinence by tearing the treasure-seekers in a shocking manner. After having recovered from their wounds, the determined Welshmen renewed the attack — this time with silver bullets, which they had got blessed by a good-natured priest. The bullets rattled harmlessly on the feathers of the terrible birds; the ground shook under foot; rain descended in torrents; with their great wings the eagles beat out the gold-hunters' torches, and they barely escaped with their lives."
1 It is at present being entirely restored and made habitable by its owner, Lord Bute.

Intertranswiki/French new member

Hello,

I just joined WikiProject Intertranswiki/French.

By the way, I noticed that the account of one member listed there, viz. Hectorthebat, was indefinitely suspended in 2010, so you might want to remove them from the list. If you reply here, please ping me by adding {{U|Mathglot}} to your message. Mathglot (talk) 09:23, 9 April 2015 (UTC)

Mathglot Hi. Yes, a great shame isn't it, we need several hundred editors regularly translating from French wikipedia. If you could begin creating lists of missing articles from French wikipedia in the project space I'm sure some of us would show an interest. It's about time the project had new life breathed into it. We now have 33 million articles across all wikis, this will double in the next 10 years at least! Translation will be the key to our future growth!♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:45, 9 April 2015 (UTC)

If that's the case, perhaps recruitment would be more valuable than spending time on individual articles just now with very limited resources. I note that there are over 7,000 French-speaking users self-categorized on their user pages at level Fr-3 or above: User_fr-N: 2,868; User_fr-5: 318; User_fr-4: 928; User_fr-3: 3,153. Doubtless many are probably inactive, but if we could figure out which of these are active editors, or even better, active translators, we could send them invites to join the project. Another approach would be to find those users active both on EN and FR wikipedias or actively translating. As a specific example: I fit both these groups (Fr-3, active on both, and translating), and had I received a direct invite to join the project I surely would have done so earlier. Perhaps there are resources where someone could write a bot to make a list of the users in either of these categories? Mathglot (talk) 10:16, 9 April 2015 (UTC)

Definitely. In fact I was saying the other day to Rosie that the foundation should have a public relations department which actively tries to make agreements with institutions and get schools and universities involved with translation. You could begin listing a few missing article in pages like this. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:05, 9 April 2015 (UTC)

On a related note, I cancelled a CSD A7 from Brunettes Shoot Blondes as it has a bucketload of sources ... in Ukrainian. (Check out the video for "Knock Knock". Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 09:21, 12 April 2015 (UTC)

Opposing even to do a quick check externally before nominating something which isn't obvious vandalism says it all really. They can't bare to part with their cowboy patrolling...♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:10, 12 April 2015 (UTC)

About MrX: I am a Wikipedia editor whose simple goal is to help expand this global repository of free information delete notable content added by newbies and act like a complete asshole to editors who want to provide a solution to a major problem with scaring away potential editors per WP:BURDEN, WP:CHOICE blablablaaa Sigh ....♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:10, 12 April 2015 (UTC)

I'll see if I can get something on that Village Pump thread, though so far most of my points have been said by others, but I think you're being too hard on Mr X. He does a lot of NPP and occasionally gets it wrong, like everyone else does. I look at CAT:CSD all the time and there are articles tagged as A7 (especially Indian businesses and people, which get tagged all the time) and think "maybe that's salvagable, maybe it isn't". The problem we've got with NPP being newbie hostile isn't down to any specific editor, it's the overall framework, and I'm quite happy to think that the majority of A7s I overturned were tagged in absolute good faith. Tagger education is important. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 11:40, 12 April 2015 (UTC)

I don't know him to be fair, but I just can't believe anybody with a brain would think it much to ask a new page patroller to google/book search a topic before deleting as non notable. And it's preventing positive change from happening on here. Point 2 appliesDr. Blofeld 11:49, 12 April 2015 (UTC)

Do you know the source you used to create this article? It's tagged as a hoax -- which I don't think is correct, but I can't verify it against anything that looks terribly official. The words "Gunnepana" and "Udagammedda" exist in census documents, but I don't see "Gunnepana Udagammedda". Thoughts? Calliopejen1 (talk) 04:26, 10 April 2015 (UTC)

Doubt it's a hoax, but the coords were the same as Lewella so I redirected it. It's probably a nearby hamlet.♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:54, 10 April 2015 (UTC)

Evidence that RO is a Sock

[edit]

RO and I both post from the western U.S. We both are obviously the same person. And since there was an SPI mentioned here, and then I mentioned the same SPI later, I am obviously a sock of the person being investigated, and since RO is my sock (or vice-versa, I'm not sure), she is also obviously a sock of the person being investigated. See how that works? Lynn Wysong (talk) 12:07, 11 April 2015 (UTC)

I'm not sure I really care. Until somebody has actual checkuser proof of RO's sock accounts...♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:21, 11 April 2015 (UTC)

But, what if the CU shows there's no relationship? Then the fun is over. Best to just keep accusing indefinitely. Lynn Wysong (talk) 12:55, 11 April 2015 (UTC)

You're betting on the wrong horse. A CU can never show there's no relationship - it may find no technical evidence of a strong link between two accounts, but that means either that that the two accounts are not connected or that the sockmaster is capable of avoiding detection by CU. Take a look at Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Mantanmoreland where even ArbCom couldn't be certain that Matanmoreland was socking. He slipped up eventually (edited through his main IP and then via a proxy hundreds of miles away on the same account within minutes Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/IncidentArchive426 #Mantanmoreland and Bassettcat) and was indeffed by the community. If you can change your IP regularly you can go a long way to circumventing CU. Socking from someone like ItsLassieTime (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · page moves · block user · block log) has caused huge disruption for many editors; and those who have suffered from it are quite likely to be suspicious of someone whose behaviour has echoes of ILT, especially when they have a IP that hops around. --RexxS (talk) 15:25, 12 April 2015 (UTC)
RexxS, I know my IP hops around. It's always connected to my cable company but the geolocation roams all around the county. It's all within about the same 50 sq miles but it's not anything that I have any control over. And plenty of people spend a lot of time on the road for their jobs and use the local hotel wifi. There are a lot of reasons why editor's IP would change that seem to some people to be "suspicious" but are just connected to their ISP or wifi connections. It seems like in case where someone is accused of being a sock, good faith goes out the window. But without CU proof, they are just unfounded accusations and personal attacks. And editors can waste an awful lot of time sock-hunting. Liz Read! Talk! 15:50, 12 April 2015 (UTC)

Amazes me how people remember people like Lassie. We've lost a lot of editors over the years banned or retired but I have a job thinking of many of them. Unless it's very obvious and they edit a niche topic or troll the same people I have a very hard job recognising them. A newbie who suddenly turns up and is an expert on a topic, guidelines or comments against an established user at a thread I usually take for granted that they're a sock but I'd have a hard time figuring out who. Unless you can formally prove RO is a certain person I agree, I don't think it's worth bothering with, RO is blocked for six months anyway.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:06, 12 April 2015 (UTC)

What is your opinion?

[edit]

A recent edit reminded me of an old discussion on Talk:Caspar David Friedrich. One or two other users, among them Rhode Island Red, have removed my short references to HA Schult and Gotthard Graubner (see [25]) from the Caspar David Friedrich page, simply because they were of the opinion that these are minor artists not worth mentioning in the featured Caspar David Friedrich article, although the work of these important German artists is clearly inspired by Friedrich, as several independent sources say. To my mind, linking is an important feature of Wikipedia, binding the project together into an interconnected whole, as connections to related subjects of other articles are always useful, and these were just two additional links that were well sourced. What is your opinion concerning this case? Wikiwiserick (talk) 13:11, 12 April 2015 (UTC)

Well, it's a featured article now so I wouldn't worry about it, worry about those which badly need the work!♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:16, 12 April 2015 (UTC)

I didn't worry about this case for three years or so, and created many other new articles, but I still think that the removal of these links was unjustified. Wikiwiserick (talk) 13:22, 12 April 2015 (UTC)

Sorry, due to some RL issues, I'm sometimes a bit slow in responding. Whichever you feel most comfortable with. Have just added page numbers and made all refs to "same style". I'd say it's been well-researched considering no biography has been written on Tanner. I'll edit it. One thing, you say "Not until he heard Tanner whistling on the air as part of Ted Weems' Orchestra did the KYW station manager know of Tanner's whistling ability." -but then you claim it was later than they discovered it after he joined?♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:46, 14 April 2015 (UTC)

Let me get rid of that sentence as it seems to be confusing. Tanner was hired as a vocalist by both the radio station and Weems. Weems didn't hear him whistle until the band was having a high time on the bus. Weems then asked Tanner to perform as a whistler and it became a hit. As an aside, Ted Weems had a great sense of talent; he had Perry Como, Paul Winchell and Marilyn Maxwell working for him back when. He also had Red Ingle working for him. Back in 1962, Como invited Weems and the rest of the band to be his guests on the television show-this was probably the last time all of them appeared together as Weems died the next year. We hope (talk) 13:10, 14 April 2015 (UTC)

Hokay I've given it an edit, clear up the above and I'll renom it. It should never have been quick failed.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:02, 14 April 2015 (UTC)

Newspapers.com check-in

[edit]

Hello Dr. Blofeld,

You are receiving this message because you have a one-year subscription to Newspapers.com through the Wikipedia Library. This is a brief update, to remind you about that access:

  • Please make sure that you can still log in to your Newspapers.com account. If you are having trouble let me know.
  • Remember, if you find this source useful for your Wikipedia work, to include citations with links on Wikipedia. Links to partner resources are one of the few ways we can demonstrate usage and demand for accounts to our partners. The greater the linkage, the greater the likelihood a useful partnership will be renewed. Also, keep in mind that part of Newspapers.com is open access via the clipping function. Clippings allow you to identify particular articles, extract them from the original full sheet newspaper, and share them through unique URLs. Wikipedia users who click on a clipping link in your citation list will be able to access that particular article, and the full page of the paper if they come from the clipping, without needing to subscribe to Newspapers.com. For more information about how to use clippings, see http://www.newspapers.com/basics/#h-clips .
  • Do you write unusual articles using this partner's sources? Did access to this source create new opportunities for you in the Wikipedia community? If you have a unique story to share about your contributions, let me know and we can set up an opportunity for you to write a blog post about your work with one of our partner's resources.

Finally, we would greatly appreciate it if you filled out this short survey. Your input will help us to facilitate this particular partnership, and to discover what other partnerships and services the Wikipedia Library can offer.

Thank you,

Wikipedia Library Newspapers.com account coordinator HazelAB (talk) 23:19, 13 April 2015 (UTC)

For your help with Elmo Tanner. 78.26 and I have worked on the article for about 4 years. The sticking point always seemed to be that it was hard to get enough information (reliable sources) to make a try for GA with it. During that time, things like Lantern and newspapers.com have made reliable information more available, and we thought there was enough now to think about GA. I know 78.26 is traveling, but I'll bet he'll remember where he was when he signs in and sees he's now the co-author of his first GA! :-) We hope (talk) 23:19, 15 April 2015 (UTC)

DYK nomination of Cassava production in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Cassava production in the Republic of the Congo

[edit]

Hello! Your submission of Cassava production in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Cassava production in the Republic of the Congo at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comments underneath your nominations' entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! – iridescent 19:38, 18 April 2015 (UTC)

You're right, I'm no great fan of DYK, but I thought the splendidly-titled The Destroying Angel and Daemons of Evil Interrupting the Orgies of the Vicious and Intemperate deserved a turn on the main page (if only to have some naked male breasts to balance out the boob-o-rama of The Sirens and Ulysses last month), and yours had the bad luck to be the nomination beneath it so it caught my eye. – iridescent 19:56, 18 April 2015 (UTC)
I've barely contributed to DYK in two years or so, but have recently decided to complete the A-Z of world entities list. Good point on the cassava articles and a well-spotted easily made error in the hook!♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:00, 18 April 2015 (UTC)
I won't labour the point on the DYK page—let one of the regular reviewers comment—but the articles are Cassava production in…, not Cassava consumption in…, so it would seem jarring to me to have the hooks be about consumption.
Regarding your comments above re "I wish people wouldn't confuse lack of content with lack of notability", you might be interested in this thread on my talkpage, incidentally, in particular the last part (the paragraphs after the long small-text aside). – iridescent 20:04, 18 April 2015 (UTC)
They're following the convention in naming we have for crop production articles. They're basically "Cassava industry in xx". Mentioning consumption is appropriate, although recent figures in both production and consumption would be good.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:35, 18 April 2015 (UTC)

Hi and thank you for your new article on Sorapiss in the Dolomites.

[edit]

Hi Dr. Blofield. A few months ago though I created Punta Sorapiss so the article is a sort of, although not an exact duplicate of that. I'm not sure how to go about this as both articles have obvious merit. What would you suggest? Regards Huddsblue (talk) 20:08, 19 April 2015 (UTC)

Good job Huddsblue! I'm just clearing red links in Cortina d'Ampezzo! I think where possible we should use the straight names for these mountain places. I think Sorapiss would be the better place to have the article, English readers might not type in "Punta". It depends what is more "official" though. We could also have an article on lake. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:14, 19 April 2015 (UTC)

Hi Dr Blofeld. Yes I think that Sorapiss is the more common name of the mountain too, the "Punta" only referring to the summit, so I think that would be the way forward. And yes I also think that the lake deserves its own article too, although most of the information on the lake is in Italian. You've done a great job on Cortina d'Ampezzo btw! Huddsblue (talk) 20:25, 19 April 2015 (UTC)
Can you ask Materialscientist to merge your history of Punta into Sorapiss so you don't lose your name and edits on it? Will likely expand Sorapiss soon. Any further assistance would be great. Amazing how much is missing. A comune like Cortina has all this and more, imagine how we'd look with fuller coverage for every comune of Italy! Having a decent article on the main article of course helps though! Can you flesh out Lagazuoi? Check it out on street view on google, about 18km southwest of Cortina by road. Incredible looking place! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:34, 19 April 2015 (UTC)

question

[edit]

See comment by RO apparently to Victoriaearle: "The point still stands though, that the last I talked with you, you said you didn't want to help me, but then you came out to participate at the Irataba PR without any intervening discussion with me. ." Is RO clear that no one's permission is needed for other editors to make comments on a PR, FAC, GA etc.? Would an IBan prevent Victoriaearle, Montanabw and others already effectively banned by RO from her talk pages from taking part in FACs and PRs etc. or edit articles or article talk pages she considers "hers"? Not sure how these work. EChastain (talk) 18:12, 24 April 2015 (UTC)

I'm sure there's some valid reasons why there shouldn't be an interaction ban between them. Nobody owns content for a start and editors generally can edit whatever the hell they want. I understand that. But I think it's inevitable that they'll be at each other's throats in just a week or two. I just think overall things would run smoother if they all stayed away from each other as much as possible. I manage it with The Banner.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:04, 24 April 2015 (UTC)

FWIW, RO posted at WP:IPNA that Irataba was up for FAC, I'm a member of that project and qualified to review articles in that subject area. So, broadly speaking, I was invited to that one. I do think that RO has a problem with Victoriaearle and needs to be prevented from harassing VE any further. Montanabw(talk) 19:46, 24 April 2015 (UTC)
I agree, and that has to be a condition of any unblock. Eric Corbett 19:56, 24 April 2015 (UTC)
True Montana, but you did create the Duck list and keep accusing her of being a sock to the point that Ched told you to stop. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:59, 24 April 2015 (UTC)
Oh piffle! (grin) Ched appropriately reminded me that I was allowing myself to be baited and stressed out and needed to stop to breathe - I was reviewing the evidence for FOUR different users as possible socks of ILT (one DID check out) and you will note that I did not actually file any SPIs on those particular people because I didn't feel I had connected all the dots - RO had some ILT characteristics, but not all. I have subsequently created a LTA page for ItsLassieTime so we have a centralized location to look at evidence of that particular sockmaster's return. You need to also note that Ched did temporarily block one of the accounts I was investigating due to their behavior! And, you and Maunus DID unearth how many really serious problems the Irataba article had - so all I can say is that we got where we needed to go - better articles. Carrots

Carrots!
As a previous recipient of the Pony Prize (December 28, 2012), here are some carrots for your pony, recognizing your review of the Bazy Tankersley FAC. We want to reward good behavior, but we don't want your pony to have too many calories because ponies are prone to be easy keepers! Montanabw(talk) 19:46, 24 April 2015 (UTC)

Perhaps the evil one keeps horses on Goldfinger's American estate!! I meet eat a few myself though ;-).♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:44, 25 April 2015 (UTC)

Eat carrots - or horses?  ;-) You know your horsie namesake Blofeld would disapprove of anyone eating his brethren - as he prefers to eat them himself - for lunch! Montanabw(talk) 23:16, 27 April 2015 (UTC)
Is there a clip of the evil horsie running on youtube? I'd like to see him!♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:32, 28 April 2015 (UTC)

@CosmicEmperor: Got your email. I agree that those films should be improved but I don't primarily edit Indian film articles, I just help out with promoting them. I've said I'll expand Anand with Sven as I've seen the film, but the others you'd be better off asking somebody like Bollyjeff or Ssven2.♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:49, 25 April 2015 (UTC)

Re:Ryan O'Neal

[edit]

The file has problems: File:Ryan O'Neal and Leigh Taylor-Young.JPG. If you look at the Commmons description, there's a lot of empty talk about why it's in the public domain, but there's no proof. The eBay link works and you see the seller is offering a transparency which we can't possibly date. Not being able to date it or to prove that it did come from ABC, we can't do any searches to see if it was registered for copyright or not. The photo should go to DR at Commons; I also would be wary of items from this uploader as he/she has had many files deleted. Sorry, Doc! :) We hope (talk) 12:47, 25 April 2015 (UTC)

I guess I'll have to use your File:Ryan_O'Neal_Empire_1962.JPG then!♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:59, 25 April 2015 (UTC)

Let me see what may be at eBay--there might be a magazine ad for Barry Lyndon that wasn't copyright marked; an ad may have some photos in it. It's only a chance but it takes just a few minutes to have a look. We hope (talk) 13:15, 25 April 2015 (UTC)
Would this one do? There's an August 1967 stamp on the back. We hope (talk) 13:21, 25 April 2015 (UTC)
Nah, the current one's OK.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:28, 25 April 2015 (UTC)

re: ping

[edit]

In reply to your request, I won't stand in the way of any improvements to the project. If someone feels it's best to unblock, I won't complain. Still, it's Coffee that needs to be consulted here, rather than me; as he is the one who placed the block. While I do have my reservations, I don't have a crystal ball; and will only hope for the best. — Ched :  ?  13:17, 26 April 2015 (UTC)

Long term I think there needs to be an interaction ban if RO is to continue editing here. Like yourself and others I can't see it working long term unless restrictions are imposed. I think that would need some discussion. But I think allowing her to do a two week trial and show her worth (without people giving her a hard time over her content) would be a good start. If in that period she displays that she can keep out of trouble then the situation can be re-reviewed. @Coffee A number of experienced editors who have professed to have a severe disliking of RO have agreed that 6 months is a wildly excessive block duration. I understand that there was an agreement in which you promised to block her for that period if there was another incident but still... Can you lift the block for a two week period starting from today and see how she gets on. If there is further difficulty some sort of assessment of interaction/talk page restriction should be given and RO blocked again until a solution is provided. I think she should be given a fair chance, and that means for others to back off for the two week period too.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:52, 26 April 2015 (UTC)

Thank you for your comments. I have re-worded that statement as per your suggestion. However, I cannot create that awards page right now as I have my exams in few days. I might create after my exam. Thanks again.—Prashant 15:24, 26 April 2015 (UTC)

Hi Dr. Blofeld, Currenly PR is open, so if you've time then please add your comments here. Hetika (talk) 17:14, 26 April 2015 (UTC)

Yes I know, but I really think I've commented on enough Indian cinema reviews and articles this month to last half a year. Others feel the same Hetika. I'll do another in a week or two but not now.♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:25, 28 April 2015 (UTC)

This actor Mom Soth

[edit]

I saw this page you made in 2007 for Mom Soth looking over him I'm not sure if he is quite notable-I put a notability tag on him last year as well. Tough time finding info though given when your name is Mom (really you named your kid mom lol) and I get stuff like "get mothers day gifts!" as results (no surprise). I figured I ask you before I take it to a afd if I should or not cause the films might be notable. Wgolf (talk) 17:05, 29 April 2015 (UTC)

I don't know, he might have appeared in more films in Cambodia, often they don't show up on imdb. Rice People was a quiet a big film in South Asia and was nommed for an Oscar and he was a leading actor in it. I'll try to look tomorrow if I can, might have some Khmer news sources.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:23, 29 April 2015 (UTC)
