Purpose of Manas
[edit]One thing that's not clear in this article is why Manas in particular was selected for the post-9/11 operations. If you look at a map, it's northeast of Kabul, so planes flying from Europe or the Middle East would have to travel farther, and then fly an extra two hours to complete the segment to Afghanistan. Why wouldn't they stop somewhere along the way, like Incirlik, Kiev, or the Caspian Sea region, and use that as a transit base? -Rolypolyman (talk) 17:18, 27 March 2018 (UTC)

[edit]It was suggested that this article should be renamed Ganci Air Base. The vote is shown below:
Move. This seems to be appropriate, as using the term "air base" as two words is the more typical American usage and this is a U.S. military installation. Friejose 14:53, 16 August 2005 (UTC)
This article has been renamed after the result of a move request. violet/riga (t) 10:53, 18 August 2005 (UTC)
I ranked it as Start since the article has a good amount of information and background in my opinion. Feel free to overrule me if reasonable. --nertzy 21:49, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
Dates Are Out of Order & Problem with the Name Section
[edit]In the section on the facility's name, the second to the last paragraph begins as follows:
- An agreement ... was concluded in May 2009, entered into force on July 14, 2009, and was ratified by the Parliament of Kyrgyzstan on June 25, 2009.
If these indeed are the dates, they should be put in chronological order. Since I don't know if the dates are correct, I won't reorder them, but someone who does know should.
The First Section in the article after the Table of Contents is titled "Name" but contains far more information than about the naming of the base. For example, the facts about the 2009 agreement (which is described at least 3 times in the article), the date the center opened (repeated from the opening), the different countries whose forces have been "hosted" at the facilities, facts regarding who pays for the upkeep of the facilities, and a paragraph on how the US Embassy and the Air Force work together to maintain good will.
Clearly all these matters need to be moved, or the section should have a different title. Ileanadu (talk) 13:52, 2 September 2013 (UTC)
If you are military and going over, though it is likely to be closed, money talks. Bring warm weather gear in your carry on. Bring layered clothing in your carry on. We did not have access to our checked bagged and froze to death in 18 degrees. Also Manas people as Pissed about the shooting and whatever else is going on. Pit toilets and you DO NOT get treated well. Do not spend money on their booze. China and Russia think we are too close for comfort so do not expect to get treated well. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.48.229.41 (talk) 20:11, 23 January 2014 (UTC)
