Thesaban Tambon translation

[edit]

What is the best english translation of thesaban tambon? I choosed the term township, to distinguish it from town (which fits best with thesaban mueang). An IP user changed it to be "village" - which is IMHO not good, as village is the common translation of muban, a different entity, and "village municipality" is a bit long. Another translation might be "commune municipality" (used in Amphoe Mueang Nonthaburi), which would fit with the common translation of tambon, but is also quite long. Other one found on the web is "sub-district municipality" - also not good as subdistrict is both used for tambon and King Amphoe. Is there anything official? There's hardly any english information of the thesaban available on the net to help with this article. Interestingly the only go.th-website using the term "thesaban tambon" is [1], which is a (uncredited) copy of a wikipedia article :-) andy 11:12, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

But it seems "subdistrict municipality" is becoming the standard, see my blog. andy (talk) 21:05, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Within Wikipedia it's translated sometimes as township and sometimes as subdistrict municipality. Due to the unconquerable ugliness of "subdistrict municipality", I decided to be bold and go with township for now in the course of expanding the article. I hope you don't find that controversial. --rikker (talk) 12:54, 28 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
change (township) to the word (community) for describing a thesaban tambon, which is the local term used by Thais (User:124.121.200.190) [comment taken from good-faith edit changing old conversation [2]]

Up-to-date list of thesaban

[edit]

See Talk:Amphoe Hat Yai - is there any Thai website which shows complete lists of all the thesaban with their current status? The best I know so far is the annual statistics at DOPA - but there we have to wait for one year till we see any status changes or newly created thesaban. andy 11:41, 3 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

With quite some delay the Royal Gazette (http://www.ratchakitcha.soc.go.th/RKJ/announce/search.jsp) is the authoritative source - but especially for the thesaban the publication of the changes takes up to a year after being effective. andy (talk) 21:05, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The latest changes are documented in meeting transcripts which are published on the website of the Legal Affairs Bureau. But in these they are in between lots of other things discussed by this board (the one responsible for the thesaban is number 2), I am trying to create digests with only the municipal changes in a special blog. andy (talk) 16:06, 28 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thesaban Tambon requirements

[edit]

We need a citation for the requirements for a thesaban tambon. The current law says only that it must be declared a thesaban tambon by the Ministry of Interior. But I assume the Ministry of Interior has more specific requirements, probably issued as a ประกาศ, which is why I haven't found the right file in the Royal Gazette yet. --rikker (talk) 12:54, 28 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The requirements for Thesaban Tambon might not been codified by law, but just have been guidelines for the board to decide on the setup of new subdistrict municipalities. There are two contradicting numbers floating around - one source [3] gives a number of 1500/km², the paper Recentralising while Decentralising: Centre-Local Relations and CEO Governors in Thailand says 500/km². The first source also states: There is no law specifying the number or density of population of an area to be upgraded as a Tambon Municipality except a broad outline saying it has to. But of course a citation for such a guideline and also the changes made to this guideline in the past 50 years would be great. Especially as most of the TAO upgraded to municipalities in the last two years don't fulfill the population density and sometimes even fail the population number requirement. andy (talk) 13:04, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
