Maureen Prescott

I’m wondering where someone got the information that Priscilla Pointer played Maureen Prescott in Scream 1996. I’m pretty certain it was Lynn McRee, not Priscilla. Mzimmerle (talk) 00:24, 24 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It was definitely Lynn McRee in both Scream 1 and 2. Changed name to reflect this. The proof is that, in the audio commentary on Scream 3 (on DVD or iTunes extra, commentary also on Youtube) Wes Craven and his producer Marianne Maddalena clearly state (at approx 12 minute 55 second mark) that Lynn McRee also played the role of Sidney's mother in Scream 1 photograph and reprised her role in 3. There are also interviews on Youtube with Lynn McRee herself confirming this. Only including commentary citation here (but Youtube ones can be included if allowed). So BFI/other sources saying Priscilla Pointer (who was a much older woman also) are incorrect. Database sources can be incorrect. I think in this instance we should believe the director of the movies, the producer of them, and the star herself, rather than a database and a fansite that just list her with no further documentation. Clearly it's an error. Priscilla Pointer is 98 and over 64 in 1996 and wasn't posing with a teenage Sidney (the photo featured them both), playing her 30 or 40-something year-old mother.
As if all of the above wasn't enough, a few seconds later on the Scream 3 commentary (I'm listening to it now!), editor Patrick Lussier also specifically says (at approx 13:09 mark) that Lynn McRee was the mother "in the photograph behind Sidney on the couch in Scream 1". It was irrefutably, definitely Lynn McRee in both Scream 1 and 3.

Listen between 12:50 and 13:20 mark (and again at around 20:50/20:55 where the photograph from Scream 1 is shown onscreen and again it's stated that it's Lynn McRee in the photograph in both movies).

Ok. So listing either actress on this film (Scream) seems to be pointless if it was just from a photograph. I would propose just removing that credit altogether. Mike Allen 14:04, 26 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@MikeAllenYou seemed fine with the cast member's name staying for months and even years until your info was proven incorrect and now you remove it all? Not allowed considering how well sourced it is. Will report you for edit warring and removing references if this continues. Name was here before and is now well-soured. Don't remove info simply because you were incorrect. I don’t care about being correct. And I changed it 2 months ago to a source from the BFI. Not years ago. If it makes you feel better that a lady in a photograph from 1996 has a name that, really doesn’t matter now, then so be it. Edit war? Calm down it isn’t that serious. LOL. @MikeAllen You reverted previous edits on it and acknowledged in your earlier comment on this talk page that it was a photograph but insisted it was Priscilla Pointer. Now when the director/producer/editor commentary is sourced, plus interviews with actress herself, you decide "a photograph isn't really a cast member anyway" (despite being fine with it earlier) and simply remove it all? It comes across as childish and petty and, yes, edit-warring in the extreme. The actress was hired to pose for the photograph and later reprised her role at the director's request. She is discussed by all the filmmakers who even mention the photograph being listed. Please stop with replies like the above - don't tell another editor to "calm down" and now type a sentence like that. Clearly, based on all your previous reversions, you do care. Removing sourced info just because you decide you were incorrect is petty and against Wiki policy. Stop with the edit-warring. Did Variety call Scream "Dead on arrival" in 1996?

A quote from the article reads: "During its opening weekend, the film grossed $6.4 million across 1,413 theaters—an average of $4,497 per theater—making it the fourth-highest-grossing film of the weekend, behind 101 Dalmatians ($7 million), Jerry Maguire ($13.1 million), and the debut of Beavis and Butt-Head Do America ($20.1 million). The performance was considered a failure by industry professionals, resulting in Variety labeling Scream "dead on arrival"." There are three citations for that claim which all link to articles from 2021. The first does not include the phrase "dead on arrival." The second reference includes this section:

“DOA” AT THE BOX OFFICE? NOT SO FAST.
A Dec. 20, 1996, opening had much of the cast and crew nervous about box office performance, but after a modest opening weekend, the movie kept picking up steam.
KONRAD One of the early reviews was “DOA,” dead on arrival. It came out at Christmas. It was Bob’s idea of counter-programming, which we all were quite unenthusiastic about.

But that article does not mention Variety. The third article does pin the quote to Variety:

Plec: It opened to like $6 million for the weekend.
Maddalena: Variety called us DOA against One Fine Day and Beavis and Butt-Head.

The review in Variety from December 21, 1996 is here: https://variety.com/1996/film/reviews/scream-1117436711/ and does not use the phrase "Dead on arrival" "DOA" or "D.O.A". It does say: "The pic’s chills are top-notch, but its underlying mockish tone won’t please die-hard fans. That adds up to no more than modest commercial returns and fast theatrical playoff." But that's all it really says about the film's box office performance.
