"Single-lane expressway"

[edit]

I removed the following from the Notes section of the article:

  • In Harrisburg at Exit 46A towards the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76) going southbound turns I-83 into a single-lane expressway, a rarity for American expressways.

I have no idea what it's talking about; it's poorly written (and it doesn't help that satellite imagery of the interchange is terrible). Honestly...I just don't know. I mean, if I get the jist of it, I'd rewrite it as:

But again, I don't know what the idea is. --MPD01605 (T / C) 04:12, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Its been a while, but im pretty sure that is not the case. I know that on-ramps could be single lane, however, im pretty sure this is not the case with this portion of the highway. I could be wrong though, and thinking of something else, so if im wrong, just let me knowPYLrulz 11:14, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
From the exit list, exit 46A seems to be part of this interchange: [1] (without labels). None of the roads at the interchange seem to be 2-lane roads. May be the removed text is talking about the two single-lane ramps from I-83 entering from north-east to I-83 exiting west. This isn't a peculiarity I guess? -- Paddu 19:58, 20 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In the route description I just wrote, I simply stated that I-83 exits from itself within the interchange, with each direction of traffic following a one-lane ramp. -TheOneKEA

I-83 at the Eisenhower Interchange becomes one lane each direction on the "through" routes. I-83 Southbound is two-lane entering I-283, and I-83 Northbound is two-lane entering US-322.

The same problem occurs at the I-83 / US-581 interchange. I-83 Northbound is two lanes, one of which loops around to head west on US-581, the other single lane bears off continuing as I-83 North.

As far as I know, this is the only place in the US that is part of the original Interstate system that deviates like this. Hans404 (talk) 18:52, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Business Loop

[edit]

This is actually true:

  • While technically not in the categorization of a freeway, I-83 in York, Pennsylvania has an exit ramp that is the Business Loop I-83 and is indeed the only road in America that is an interstate but not considered a freeway. It has a length of 10 miles before it merges with South George St.

WikiProject Conformance

[edit]

I just finished editing the article to bring it into line with WP:IH. Comments welcome. -TheOneKEA

Is this article still a Start-class? I tried to include as much information as possible from other, higher-rated articles in order to improve its classification. -TheOneKEA

feedback regarding Truncation section

[edit]

Footnote [4] points to what the never-completed I-83/I-95 connection was to have looked like, so I tried to move the footnote INDICATOR to an earlier paragraph (still in the "Truncation" section of the article), but the footnote indicator showed up as [1] in the preview so I have abandoned that change at least for now.

In Mapquest, I find that Pleasant Street is NORTH of where I-83 comes to grade-level interection now, so that part should be re-written. Yes, if you were on southbound I-83 there and you come to that intersection, the road straight ahead is President Street. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.63.16.82 (talk) 20:15, 1 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Image location not correct

[edit]

So i was looking at the image in the Truncation section, thinking it looked odd for it's placement. The image is captioned as "The image is a Long-distance view of intersection of Fayette Street, President Street, and I-83," now i am not going to disagree with that it is a long distance image and it's on Fayette St. Here is the problem it's such a long distance image, you can't make out the intersection, the vantage point is just approx 0.5 miles east of the intersection near the intersection E Fayette and S Caroline (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Baltimore,+MD&ll=39.293062,-76.597714&spn=92.703703,255.410156&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&hnear=Baltimore,+Maryland&gl=us&t=w&z=3&vpsrc=6&layer=c&panoid=O3PnyWAm6oQAIsfhReGX6A&cbll=39.293062,-76.597714&cbp=13,-119.68322113324764,,0,-3.838817227376481&source=gplus-ogsb). While it's a nice picture of the downtown skyline, A) you can't make out the intersection, B) it's not a vantage of the downtown that you would see from 83 (which are some nice skylines). I better view would be something like http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=39.29045,-76.60653&spn=92.703703,255.410156&t=w&z=3&vpsrc=6&layer=c&panoid=puEDGUVpHDIZhE7QF5OYow&cbll=39.29045,-76.60653&cbp=13,-18.11470149120104,,0,1.3759967124432393&source=gplus-ogsb . I know it can seem like It's just nit picking but, still. --boothy443(r|e|c|t|o) 05:45, 25 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I-83/581 info updated

[edit]

The ref/link for this section is 404 but there is a page at http://www.i-83beltway.com/bottleneck.html

I assume this is because work has actually started on the project, hard though it may be to believe. 74.99.174.96 (talk) 04:11, 19 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
