Photo

[edit]

Thanks, Richard, for inserting a picture for the article. I've been intending on taking a photo myself for use in the article but have been to lazy to get around to it! --R.carroll 18:52, 16 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well there's a few photos on there now. I added a nice sunny shot of the town center.
I thought it was a bit cheeky of mr anonymous who removed it, saying it was 'poor and low quality' (and in the same edit made the hazy reservoir photo too big again).
It's not perfect though. Someone should pop out and take a similar sunny shot slightly earlier in the afternoon (less shadows at the bottom). -- Nojer2 16:09, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I think it to be a good picture of that section of Holmfirth, Perhaps what the other user found, like I, was that if you clicked on it to see it fully, then you would see that it was a low resolution image and very pixilated when enlarged. Had it been a larger resolution image it would have been perfect. Why wait for someone else to take one? Get a camera and go for it. If you need any help in sorting it for the article just put a message on my talk page. Richard Harvey 17:29, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Infact there is no need to rush up from London to do so. I have enhanced your original image, which I will insert in the article in place of the old 1970's image I placed there earlier. Richard Harvey 18:35, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hehe. Yeah living in London now. Next time I'm in Holmfirth maybe.
But I have the original photo right here (5 megapixels). I tend to upload pics fairly small to wikipedia, to save space... But here we go. I'll upload it again as a medium sized 1500 x 981px. That should be plenty. It means I've undone your filtering whatever that was. Did you make the colours warmer or something? -- Nojer2 09:54, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Lodge's/Lodges

[edit]

I shall revert edits by 213.177.254.57 to the last version by Adambro regarding the use of apostrophe in Lodge's. The supermarket in Holmfirth along with a number of others in the Huddersfield area were owned (prior to the Co-op acquisition) by F. & A. E. Lodge. Consequently, stores of the Lodge family were Lodge's. --R.carroll 21:19, 1 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

History

[edit]

Translating the name as Holywood is amusing but incorrect. The "holly" element is OK but "firth" means forest and, to quote Oliver Rackham (The History of the Countryside p65) "to the medievals a Forest was a place of deer, not a place of trees".

Peak District boundary

[edit]

I note that the category 'Town and village of the Peak District' has been removed, with the editor stating that Holmfirth doesn't lie within the boundary. While I'm aware it's a few miles outside the Peak Park boundary, Holmfirth seems to be generally considered to be within, or at least on the edge of, the Peak District -- see the Peak District talk page. I'm not aware of any formal boundary, other than the Park one, for the district? Espresso Addict 21:28, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As no-one responded, I've restored this category, according to the policy developed at the Peak District page. Please see the Peak District talk page for more details, or to enter the debate about categorising places in the Peak. Thanks. Espresso Addict 12:38, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Can I get some clarification on external links? Should the link to the Holmfirth Folk Festival that I added in the arts section have been inserted in the external links section of the page instead? The link was deleted as "business advertising spam" by 82.30.78.230, but I don't see the difference between this and the link to the websites of Ashley Jackson or Trevor Stubley in the arts section. I was following the example set there by adding the festival link (possibly wrongly - hence this talk post).

The festival is a community event not a business (although it is supported by the Holme Valley Business Association), the website is relevant and on-topic (being about an annual event in Holmfirth), and contains informative detail (like dates and venues). Having read Wikipedia:External_links, the link seems to fulfill requirements. By the way, I have no association with the festival other than enjoying it! Tyke abroad 03:39, 25 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Working out what is and what is not spam can be a problem. Have you had a look at Wikipedia:Spam and Wikipedia:External links. I have noted on other articles especially the Peak District one, that websites which advertise accomodation or contain links to business advertising are not permitted. Having looked back through the Article Editing History, to see your link, I note that the 'Accomodation and Facilities' and 'Sponsors' tags do contain such links. which alone would not be allowed. The Trevor Stubley link contains no advertising, but the Ashley Jackson one shows prices of gallery images, but may be okay for the article. You could place your question on the Spam Talk page so that those admins more attuned to spam sites can decide on it. If it is regarded as spam the website may get added to the MediaWiki:Spam-whitelist. Richard Harvey 09:43, 25 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the heads-up. I have read the wiki pages you mention, but it's hard to distinguish in this case between sites that contain advertising and those that ARE advertising (indirectly such as Trevor Stubley's site, which may not contain advertising, but is intrinsically advertising himself - if only in the way of raising brand awareness(e.g. he advertises his own exhibitions)). I'll see what those on the spam talk page have to say. Thanks again.Tyke abroad 03:45, 26 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Glad to have helped! I followed your messages through to see the answers you got and noted the comments from JoeSmack regarding Ashley Jackson & Trevor Stubley's external links. His answer makes sense and as he has turned them into, red, wiki-links I assume that someone may now write an article on them individually and place the links in those articles. Both are internationally acclaimed artist, Ashley Jackson has featured on the UK TV frequently, including a complete TV series, so I am surprised that an article on them have not already been done. I have now inserted Post Nominals and more appropriate <ref> links to them. I know that there are two seperate music festivals in Holmfirth, though one didn't take place in 2006, so I have enlarged the info slightly, which I hope is correct? Perhaps you could check this please? Unfortunately the comment from JoeSmack has also left a dilema in that I am now aware of huge amounts of links in other articles that apparently also fall under the 'Number 13' rule! :( Oh Hum! Richard Harvey 08:31, 28 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The answer seems so obvious now! I hope I haven't caused too much work... Thanks again! Tyke abroad

River Holme

[edit]

Isn't the description of the River Holme a bit misleading as the river actually rises from Holme Moss?Tyke abroad (talk) 10:00, 17 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see a description of the river on this article, just a link to the the river's article page River Holme. Any discussion on that pages description of the river should take place on that articles talk page not this one. Though I don't really see a problem with the description that has been provided there, which is accurate! :0) Richard Harvey (talk) 17:42, 17 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I just don't see the relevance of Holme Styes here - both these rivers are fed from a variety of sources (Brownhill, Yateholme, Digley, etc.). Plus this description makes it sound like Holme Styes is the head water for both rivers - something it clearly is not.Tyke abroad (talk) 10:16, 18 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I see what you mean! However the problem is now resolved as I've deleted the information from the article lead. It was not only incorrect, but also irrelevant to the article. Richard Harvey (talk) 18:21, 18 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Last of the Summer Wine

[edit]

No mention that the show was filmed in Holmfirth? I'm surprised! TR (talk) 11:56, 15 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps you missed the first paragraph of the section titled 'Description'. Holmfirth was the setting for the TV series, however the majority of filming encompassed a very wide and diverse area, not all of which is within the area around Holmfirth, such as Jackson Bridge, Hepworth, Meltham and Marsden. Richard Harvey (talk) 13:38, 15 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Population

[edit]

Can anyone find a population for Holmfirth, besides the current one that inlcudes the whole ward. I would have estimated the population of the town alone would have been around 6,000- 7,000. Mtaylor848 (talk) 19:44, 6 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If you just mean the 'Settlement' area of Holmfirth and not those in the adjoining ones, such as Underbank & Cinderhills, Burnlee, Cartworth Moor, Upperthong, Wooldale, Thongsbridge, etc then you are looking at a current figure around 1,980 - 2,000. Richard Harvey (talk) 08:55, 7 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Holmfirth Festival alleged "spamlink" again

[edit]

Richard Harvey zaps my link to Holmfirth Festival of Folk as spam. I see above that this has happened before.

I don't have the time (or to be honest the interest) to read up chapter and verse about this, or the slightest inclination to get into an edit war over something so trivial, but someone seems to be getting a bit carried away with wiki-dogma here. Surely the concept of spamlinking concerns cynical attempts to use Wikipedia to boost the rankings of or visitors to a website for commercial ends. A link to a community folk festival which is part of the culture of Holmfirth and one reason someone might have heard of the place is clearly not that. With no disrespect to cricketers I think it probably has more light to shed than the website of the Thongsbridge Cricket Club Junior Section.

If no linked site can contain any links to any commercial sites, then a truly vast number of useful external links on WP will have to be deleted. It will be impossible to link from the page about a festival to its official website, which frankly would be ridiculous.

Best wishes, Flapdragon (talk) 21:53, 17 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I understand your meaning and concerns. However as you noted above the link has been removed before See this question and reply from the Spam talk page concerning that specific link:- External_link_to_community_event. Have you considered creating an article about the folk festival, to which you could add the link? Richard Harvey (talk) 08:20, 18 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Holmfirth Food and Drink Festival

[edit]

Hi Folks, sorry for the lack of Wikipedia experience, would it be possible for someone to add details re the Food and Drink festival? website is http://holmfirthfoodanddrink.org. We had 40,000 people in Holmfirth for the 10th anniversary in 2015 - [1] Please let me know if you need any more info/sources. Thanks for your expert help! Jamie Jimmy2bob (talk) 22:34, 27 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

That website link is simply a promotional / advertising page for the 2016 event. That type of external link is not allowed and would be deleted by any editor. Richard Harvey (talk) 00:01, 28 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the feedback - how about adding the festival in and citing the Examiner link, leaving off the direct link to the website? As the Food and Drink festival is by far the biggest festival in Holmfirth, it really should be mentioned? Jimmy2bob (talk) 12:42, 1 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Giving this a bump, would we be able to add the Food and Drink festival, please? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.147.47.241 (talk) 22:57, 14 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
