English

[edit]

Is Fanagalo based on English or not? --Error 17:00, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Afrikaans

[edit]

I have been trying to find a fanagalo word taken from Afrikaans, as the description says it a pidgin based on the Zulu, English, and Afrikaans languages. Any comments? Mohau

There are not many but a quick look through my battered old Miners Dictionary/Woordeboek vir Mynwerkers (Chamber of Mines) did throw up a few like spyker/spikil for nail annd skaafu/skaf for food and pomp/pompa for pump. a poor seletion but in practice blacks certainly used to use many Afrikaans words underground because the bulk of the miners and shift bosses were Afrikaners. Madala skat mina sebenzile lapa pantsi. Mina kohliwa maningi lo gama. Sorry, its a long time since I worked underground and I have forgotten a lot of words. Prestige

[edit]

I read that Fanagalo was despised by black nationalists as sort of a slave language, lacking the prestige of the original black and white languages. --Error 17:00, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I thought it was because it was used mainly for giving orders.
Any chance of someone submitting a Fanagalo/Chilaplapa dictionary?

It may well be despised but the gold mines could not have functioned without it. How else would a Xhosa have understood someone from Tanzania or a Geordie?Egoli (talk) 17:57, 17 April 2017 (UTC) Egoli (talk) 17:57, 17 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Merge

[edit]

I have merged together Fanakalo and Fanagalo in one article and redirected from Fanakalo Humansdorpie 12:49, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It seems that Fanagolo was another independent formation. I've redirected it to here since it did not contain information this article didn't have already. — mark 05:19, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Pidgin or creole?

[edit]

Is Fanagalo still a pidgin, or has it become a creole language?

Tsotsitaal

[edit]

Is there any connection/relationship between Tsotsitaal and Fanagalo? BTW It may interest readers of this article that instead of being deprecated by the current government, the Pan South African Language Board is in fact commanded by its enabling law to develop and promote Fanagalo as an important national language. Chilapalapa and Shona

[edit]

The Wikipedia article on 'Chilapalapa' confirms that it had absorbed some Shona vocabulary. In particular, I remember the word "juba", meaning "cut" ... (but in Matabeleleland - "sika"). DLMcN (talk) 05:38, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
