This is too chatty:

"Also because of the dyes, it gives the disc those distinct colors at the shiny side."

And I'm not familiar with what the distinct colors look like (innocent reader). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.81.220.210 (talk) 12:05, 28 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Feature comparison

[edit]

This article ought to have some sort of comparison of the three different formats, from a neutral point of view of course. What are the benefits of using one over the other? Why is one of the formats supported by the DVD Alliance but not the DVD Forum?

Ben 08:25, 28 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am still confused how to record a feature length movie that is say 2+ hours long......

Proposed merge of DVD-R - DVD+R - DVD-RW - DVD+RW with DVD recordable

[edit]

The DVD-R - DVD+R - DVD-RW - DVD+RW articles all seem small enough that there is not reason to not merge them all into DVD recordable. Technical 13 (talk) 16:05, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • I agree -- it would be much easier to find the information one is looking for on one page vs several pages. Not sure how to start the process, though. Zaryn (talk) 16:55, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Yes -- that seems a reasonable proposal to me. The four DVD articles as of this writing add up about 25 KB in size. Although maybe DVD-RAM should also be thrown in. Comparative analysis is much easier on one page. My Wikipedia know-how is lacking so I don't know how to approach a merger. Maybe I'll read up on it if I have time - gotta jump in the pool eventually. Dark Enigma (talk) 22:22, 12 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Perfectly reasonable - It would also make it simpler to compare the differences between the formats. 86.145.240.230 (talk) 11:34, 18 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. Merge, including DVD-RAM, into DVD recordable. All these are variants of DVD optical discs, and the individual articles are relatively short. Combining them would give the reader a chance to better compare and contrast the different formats, within the same form factor. And some of the overlapping verbiage could be pared down. Of course, per convention, leave the original article title as a REDIRECT. — Becksguy (talk) 17:48, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • I support the merge. They are all recordable DVDs and their articles are quite short. It makes complete sense to merge them together as it will make it much easier. And I agree with Becksguy that DVD-RAM should also be merged. --G&CP (talk) 17:22, 3 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Also, I think that DVD+R DL, DVD-R DL, DVD+R DS, DVD-R DS, DVD+RW DL, DVD-RW DL should be merged as well. These pages are so small, there's almost no point of them in existence when they are variants of another thing (DVD). --G&CP (talk) 17:36, 3 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Everyone loves a volunteer. Go ahead and merge away. DieSwartzPunkt (talk) 12:31, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Just attempted at a merge but failed - I need a helping hand. I am simply confused how exactly to merge them together. For example, do I sort the sections as Write-once/Rewritable, or Single layer/Dual layer, or Dash/Plus? I just need to know exactly how to do it. Could you make a suggestion? --G&CP (talk) 17:52, 14 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
A very good question. Personally, I would separate them into two subsections for recordable and then rewriteable. My reasoning is that each section can then have some preamble that describes the essential differences between the two types, and then cover the individual variants. The difference between the 'dash' and 'plus' formats can easily be covered in the pre-pre-amble (if you know what I mean). If you want to have another go, put a {{Under construction|date=May 2014}} tag at the top of the article (this lets others know that it isn't finished so that they shouldn't revert it). Drop me a reminder at my talk page, and I will have a look and do a tidy up (if required) and I will take care of the housekeeping to link in the edit histories of the source articles (if you have not already done so). Have fun! DieSwartzPunkt (talk) 07:13, 13 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A comment on the 4 merges above - I'm no expert in this field, so don't mind the material on the target site being further edited or shuffled. I've linked to section, but that should only be as a starting point for readers because relevant material is also found in subsequent later sections. For example, comparisons of speed, size, capacity and disc structure are discussed together. Further refinements are welcome! Klbrain (talk) 16:43, 14 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Super Multi

[edit]

@Paulotavio: Thank you for your recent edit. I'm not knowledgeable about the subject matter. I would like to suggest improving your edit by including a comment in the source (see WP:HIDDEN), as it is possible another editor may make the same confusion and re-link to Super Multi. It is very probable that in such a circumstance, the editor would not be aware that the link was previously removed. — CJDOS, Sheridan, OR (talk) 19:55, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Done! Thanks. Paulotavio (talk) 00:48, 31 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Special "Video" recordable disks

[edit]

If I'm recalling correctly, you have to use the special "video" type dvd's on dedicated recorders (eg, vcr dvd combos with a burner on them). Computers don't have this problem.

Probably the same shlick regarding "audio cd-r's" where dedicated audio recorders don't record to the standard "data cd-r's" because of the weird piracy deterrence tax thing the movie and record labels -bribed- lobbied western companies for weird money related things. 2601:540:C000:43C0:3D1F:EE94:C190:C739 (talk) 22:16, 9 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

No. You might be confusing it with DVD-VR, which is a logical format for recording videos to discs. "Logical format" means it is not a separate physical format. It is just a different directory structure with different file names on the same recordable discs.
DVD video recorders like the Panasonic DMR-EH60 work with ordinary writable media. Some devices only work with specific types of media. For example, the Sharp DV-RW250 (2004) is able to write to DVD-R and DVD-RW, but can only read DVD+R and DVD+RW. But there is no such thing as a "DVD recorder only" disc that doesn't support computer DVD writers.
In fact, the optical drives used in DVD recorders are the same as in computers. For example, the DV-RW250 uses a Pioneer DVR-R07, which is like a DVR-107 except with a proprietary ZIF connector instead of SATA. CDVDBD (talk) 15:42, 22 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed merge of DVD±R into DVD recordable

[edit]

As per DVD-R and DVD+R. -- Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 21:39, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think it would be smart to mege them DVD recordable is already quite a long article dispite lacking details on the recording technology for Different dvd recordable / rerecordable types meging the article about recorders is unnecessary and would make this article even longer A wiki editor 42 (talk) 13:02, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Support. - DVD±R is a single-paragraph article, so the length it adds to "DVD recordable" is trivial. CDVDBD (talk) 14:39, 22 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
