Wikimedia takes WA

[edit]

Locations required (cities/regions):

  • [15,110], [37, 130] (All WA)

Possible messages:

Date range required:

  • 14 November to 16 November. (Need sooner rather than later. Did not learn about this until last night. Sorry for that.)

Misc info:

  • Reason for requesting: This is the Aussie version of Wikipedia Loves Monuments. Huge area is because geolocation in Australia is notoriously wrong. The intention is to cover the whole of of Western Australia to address that problem.
  • User requesting: LauraHale (talk)

Discussion

I'm not sure why the "" (ellipsis) was used initially; as an aside, I've created a redirect for that now. John Vandenberg (chat) 06:14, 14 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There are three errors in the thing, in part because nobody actually consulted anybody involved in the events before rushing to geonotice. Can we please take this down? It's embarrassing. Orderinchaos 05:42, 14 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
After discovering I actually could do so, I have removed the geonotice. It is not the right of Wikimedia Australia to dictate to anyone running a non-chapter event in its territory how it should be promoted, and I feel in this case the errors have probably compromised the event, as the geonotice wasn't removed before lunchtime Perth time. The event, for the record, has nothing to do with Wikipedia Loves Monuments or WMAu's parallel event running in the eastern states - it's based on Wikipedia Takes Manhattan. Orderinchaos 05:55, 14 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
... What are you talking about? The contest is for all of Australia and all of New Zealand. There is nothing in there that says "This is only for a few people from the ACT, QLD, VIC, TAS and NSW." If you think it is limited that way, then I'll be happy to edit the proposal to make it extremely clear that Western Australians, South Australians and Northern Territory folks are included along side the Eastern States and New Zealand. WM-AU represents the whole of Australia. If you don't think so, I'll be happy as the VP of WM AU to work on doing more there. When I've talked to GLAM people in relation to what Australia is doing, I've talked about it in the context of Wikipedia Loves Monuments, and outsiders have talked to me about the contest in the context of Wikipedia Loves Monuments. In talking with GLAM reps about how and when to schedule the next big push and getting Australia involved with that effort, it has been done in that context. I'm not saying the original proposal is based on Wikipedia Loves Monuments but chapter wise, that is no longer how it is being treated in terms of gaining support for it. --LauraHale (talk) 06:43, 14 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
As good as that is - and I genuinely hope the chapter's contest is successful - the event in Perth is in fact entirely unrelated. It's not the same structure or format, it doesn't have the same aims, and it was copied from a different "parent" event. "Australia" is not doing this - the Fremantle event is being run by one person in conjunction with a Fremantle-based cultural organisation, mine (Joondalup) is being run by one person in conjunction with an LGA, and when we have event partners it's essential that we work with them rather than adopting some sort of unplanned marketing strategy without any consultation with those running it that additionally confuses and pisses people off. Moreover, I'm not even seeing the point of geonotice given it's outreach and our partners can do far better outreach for us than WM ever could. Orderinchaos 06:55, 14 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
What's wrong with linking to Wikipedia loves … my town (apart from the ellipsis weirdness)? Seems a more-or-less related thing. Certainly pretty much what we're doing in Fremantle anyway, apart from the competitive bit. Anyway, at least I now know why I never even saw the geonotice that people were talking about!  :-) By the way, did everyone who viewed Wikipedia from WA get to see it, or only logged-in people? And can it be put back up, with just the links to the two Wiki Takes events? —Sam Wilson 09:24, 14 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Please dont put the notices back up, the WA community should at very least be given the opportunity to discuss the matter Gnangarra 10:06, 14 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion

  • The suggested wording doesn't have enough appeal to the average Micronesian editor - will it be better to add the fact that there are no identified Micronesian editors on the English Wikipedia? Deryck C. 22:40, 29 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Would be happy with something like "Outreach Oceania is looking for volunteers to help with event planning in the Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia. We're seeking planning help!" Then, as we get closer to holding it, have an invitation to attend any public events. --LauraHale (talk) 23:08, 29 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Added a fourth alternative that may better address the local population. :) --LauraHale (talk) 19:56, 2 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Try a combination of 3 and 4? "Wikimedians are coming to the Federal States of Micronesia and the Marshall Islands in early 2012. Local volunteers, please contact us to get involved in the planning." Deryck C. 18:16, 6 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Added to the list. :) Would really like it to go live. :) --LauraHale (talk) 00:00, 8 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Can this be removed? :( Sadly, due to major conflicts regarding availability of organisers due to scheduling, we have had to postpone. This is reflected on the planning page and we have contacted parties to inform them of this. --LauraHale (talk) 04:52, 19 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Australian geolocations tend to be very inaccurate. I've been known to have an IP address place me in Sydney's suburbs on occasion. (Sydney is about 3 and a half hours away.) Canberra itself tends to generally reference the whole of the Australian Capital Territory, and often includes Queanbeyan. If it was going in any direction, I'd opt for larger instead of smaller. --LauraHale (talk) 19:25, 2 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Considering the event itself is on the 20th, it would be best (I think, at least) if this could go up as soon as possible to get maximum impact. Regards, Rock drum Ba-dumCrash 17:41, 2 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately we have a (implicit?) rule here which says the UK shouldn't have more than 2 overlapping geonotices at the same time, so you'd need to negotiate with Panyd about taking down one of the running ones before this can be put up. Deryck C. 17:49, 2 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Deryck, we have a slight problem. In the next two three weeks the following are occuring:
  • 12th November - Girl geeks editing day
  • 13th November - Sue is giving a talk at Imperial College
  • 20th November - Brighton Hackathon
  • 22nd November - First Liverpool Wikimeet
In an ideal world, all of these things would get coverage and at least three of them would get coverage of all of the UK. I beg either your patience or advice on this one because it's a busy month! PanydThe muffin is not subtle 19:37, 2 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Actually I thought the London crowd has stopped using geo-notices for a while, but if you think Sue's talk really needs that much extra punch, then I'll leave it as that. Deryck C. 18:13, 6 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • This notice has already been live for a few days, considering the event is more than 3 weeks away, doesn't this seem a bit excessively early? -- (talk) 19:16, 29 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    • It's not excessively early, although I agree it doesn't need to cover all UK just yet. I've reduced the geonotice area to cover Pwllheli to Manchester (ie. intended audience), but would recommend extending the geonotice to all UK a week before the meetup to catch any geolocation malfunction within the UK. Suggest adding Ottawa/Gatineau area as well, they're close enough to Montreal and it can expand your pool of participants significantly. Risker (talk) 06:02, 31 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes good idea... Even people from Toronto and London (ON) already confirm their presence in Montreal; it's only 1 hour by plan and not that expensive. So I think this should be also extended in Ontario. I made a map to show how large the Geonotice should cover, maybe? Antaya (talk) 14:12, 31 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Btw, let say someone visit Wikipedia Francophone, is the Geonotice will be in French, or this is only for WP-en? Antaya (talk) 13:44, 31 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think it will only be on English Wikipedia. French Wikipedia doesnt appear to have the "geonotice" set up, yet. It is easy to set up; a fr.wp sysop will need to make a few JavaScript changes. John Vandenberg (chat) 13:59, 31 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Could it be also for Wikimedia Commons, since it's a photographic event? Antaya (talk) 14:46, 31 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Great idea. I have initiated a discussion about geonotices on Commons. commons:Commons:Village_pump#Geonotices. --John Vandenberg (chat) 10:22, 1 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
So finally, would it be possible to add that notice please? Thank you. Antaya (talk) 20:02, 10 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Using the second proposal, I would reword the English to:

"You are invited to Wikipedia Takes Montreal, a photo scavenger hunt with more than $1,000 in prizes, on August 28th. Invite your friends to form a team; anyone can participate!"

That changes the word order a little bit, but I was trying to correct the comma splice in the last sentence, and "photographic hunt" sounds a little awkward to my ear for English. Dominic·t 20:25, 10 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Would it be possible to add the geonotice : "You are invited to Wikipedia Takes Montreal, a photo scavenger hunt with more than $1,000 in prizes, on August 28th. Invite your friends to form a team; anyone can participate!"...
Thank you. Antaya (talk) 02:29, 15 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Make sure wikimedians are aware. Brum meeting is new and may attract new people

I can do this myself but seems good manners to leave it here for a while. Victuallers (talk) 20:53, 2 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion There are also meetups happening on 20 June in Edinburgh, and on 25 June in Manchester. Would it make sense to do a combined announcement, e.g.:

If so, the problem is then when the notice should be displayed - 7 June until 25 June? Mike Peel (talk) 18:44, 5 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have added this and a shorter one split by the IRC call. Not sure if its working though Victuallers (talk) 06:54, 8 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think that's a bad combination; if we're doing two separate notices this month, then the second one shouldn't include Birmingham and London. I like Fæ's idea of trimming off events as they occur. So for now I've lengthened the date of the complete one, and removed the Brum-London specific one. Hope that's OK (and that it's working - doesn't seem to be for me right now... :-/) Mike Peel (talk) 08:58, 8 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Not working for me either - could someone whizzo at these things cast an independent eye over the .js file? -- (talk) 10:31, 8 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support a combined announcement to show WM-UK progress on the social meetings front. Events could be trimmed off as they occur if it runs for a couple of weeks. If this does not happen then I would like a Scotland focused notice for the Edinburgh meet. (talk) 08:03, 8 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I don't mind at all - I just want to find out why its not working, I only split to avoid having this and the IRC reminder on at the same time. The Brum meeting is badly in need of advertising, the finessing is less important. Victuallers (talk) 11:58, 8 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
My understanding from the bug link on the talk page is that geonotices are broken with no due date for a fix. Please take this into account if we are making promises to external organizations on how we get interest in events. -- (talk) 06:20, 16 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps a better message would be: On April 9, a Backstage Pass will be held at the Derby Museum and Art Gallery. To sign up, please add your username here. Thoughts? --Rock drum Ba-dumCrash (Driving well?) 12:37, 27 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks RD - that gives people a choice. I'm happy with either, although the end could be shortened with "... held at Derby Museums.sign up here." I'm not sure whether brevity or size is important Victuallers (talk) 16:04, 27 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have been asked by Victuallers to ensure that this is not added to MediaWiki:Geonotice.js he gives the "go ahead". Regards, Rock drum Ba-dumCrash (Driving well?) 17:16, 8 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
checkY All happy now Victuallers (talk) 20:49, 9 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
On second thoughts, would it not be better to link to wmuk:Derby Backstage Pass as the signup page? Regards, Rock drum Ba-dumCrash (Driving well?) 16:36, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed ... any idea who to contact to make this happen? I will look and see if its easy Victuallers (talk) 21:20, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
