Possible messages:

Date range required:

  • I don't mind when, or for how long it stays up

Misc info:

  • Reason for requesting: I just thought it would be nice to get some people who have actually been there and studied the local flora and fauna to participate in the project. (Besides, nobody else would be crazy enough to request a geonotice for a frozen wasteland).

  • Should be activated now. Let me know how it looks to you.--Pharos (talk) 17:05, 12 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    • Thank you very much for the prompt action. The only thing that struck me, looking at the notice, besides how large it was, was that it says "Maryland" rather than "Bethesda" I'm guessing that's because in case someone from (say) New York ends up seeing the notice; he/she wouldn't know where Bethesda is. If the system were more accurate in identifying the IP location, I'd push for "Bethesda" instead.
    • Any, again, thanks for the notice. The system is very useful. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 13:06, 13 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia UK initiatives notice

[edit]

Locations required (cities/regions):

  • United Kingdom

Possible messages:

Date range required:

  • No fixed date; ASAP would be preferable.

Misc info:

  • Reason for requesting: To draw attention to three initiatives currently being planned by Wikimedia UK, and also to more generally draw attention to the existance of the chapter (and to encourage people to join/donate).
  • User requesting: Mike Peel (talk)
Discussion
[edit]
  • Have you considered instead of all these links, maybe making a single page which would be a "welcome" to the chapter and its recent initiatives, and which would also have a sign-up space?--Pharos (talk) 04:25, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for making this live. We thought about having one link, but thought that having links to the individual project pages would be more appealing to more people, who would be interested in specific things rather than the whole chapter. Mike Peel (talk) 20:27, 4 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • The Wikimedia UK watchlist notice is problematic to editors using the "green on black" gadget - only the wikilinks are visible, other text appears in black on a black background. DuncanHill (talk) 15:06, 2 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not eccentric, I just don't like to hurt my eyes - without the green-screen, Wikipedia is painful. DuncanHill (talk) 18:12, 5 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
      • This hasn't been noticed before and there have been relatively few UK notices so far, so perhaps the brits are a somewhat more nostalgic bunch. Anyway, the color="#000" in MediaWiki:Geonotice.js needs to be removed so that the text colour of the notice inherits that of the page body. Someone on the script's talk page also disliked the larger size of the text, so perhaps the font tag (and its closing tag) could be removed altogether. --Para (talk) 00:52, 3 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Locations required (cities/regions):

  • United Kingdom

Possible messages:

  • United Kingdom residents are invited to sign a petition requesting clarification of copyright law.

Date range required:

  • As soon as possible (not totally urgent though), for maybe 3 weeks.

Misc info:

  • Reason for requesting: Not your usual sort of request, I know, but I think that the possibility of really achieving something good for the WMF and everyone in the UK drives me in this interest. Details of the petition itself is on the linked page. (Only UK residents can sign the petition.)

Discussion
[edit]
  • Um, this seems like an almost direct involvement in the UK political process, and probably something we shouldn't go forward with unless there's a great deal of discussion and consensus achieved first. Because putting this up will kind of make it look like the WMF is officially supporting this specific political process, which would normally be a no-no.--Pharos (talk) 19:26, 31 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    • I guess you're right. I wouldn't call it political but yes, I can understand the whole endorsement issue. On the other hand, I think of it more as an opportunity to get together to (potentially) further the goals of the WMF, like a big wiki-meetup if you will. - Jarry1250 [ In the UK?
