Fırat University is a public university in Elazığ, Turkey. The university was founded in 1975 and is named after the Turkish name for the Euphrates River, which originates near Elazığ. As one of the prominent academic institutions in Eastern Turkey, the university comprises twelve schools, four institutes, one conservatory, three vocational schools, and twenty-one research centers. It places a strong emphasis on scientific and technological development and research.

History

Fırat University was initially opened as Elazığ Technical College in 1967 and was later renamed the Elazığ State Academy of Engineering and Architecture. The university was officially established and gained its current name in 1975, with the School of Veterinary Medicine serving as the core program and structure of the institution. The School of Veterinary Medicine itself was founded in 1970 as a branch of Ankara University in Elazığ.
