Marks & Spencer Percy Pigs

Percy Pigs are pig-shaped confectionery made by Marks & Spencer. They are a traditional sweet in the United Kingdom and have been around for many years. The name "Percy Pig" has now been trademarked by Marks and Spencer.

Marks & Spencer Percy Pigs contain real pork in the form of pork gelatin.

History

Whilst the original derivation of the Percy Pig is unknown, sources suggest it has been around since before the First World War when it was sold for less than a penny[citation needed]. Later in the 1940s it joined a classic combination of penny sweets and became a modern day classic.

Variations

Other variations are now in existence, including one with more flavours known as "Percy Pig & Pals" (The additional flavours are cola and grape). The original Percy Pigs are available in 100, 200 and 400 grams, and the Percy Pig and Pals sweets are available in 100 and 200 grams.

Recently, Penny Pigs (lemon flavoured sweets) and Percy Piglets (smaller Percy Pigs) have been launched.

The Canadian variant of Percy Pigs are called "Juiced Up", although they are not produced by Marks and Spencer. They are simply a very close match for the same product.

Another variation is "Eric the Elephant" produced by Sainsbury's, while ASDA have another similar product called "Stanley Snail".

Merchandise

Percy Pig has grown into a brand of its own in Marks and Spencer. Items such as socks and Piggy Banks have appeared in M&S stores. Some festive Christmas lines have also been introduced such as the Percy Pig Biscuit Barrel, Percy Pig Advent calendar, Percy Pig pencil cases, Percy Pig Birthday Cake Candles and Percy Pig children's books. Recently a Percy Pig piggy bank was added to the line, with a festive hat for the Christmas period. Also available is a Percy Pig sound mug. France has also recently introduced a sweet similar to that of the english percy pig variation, "petit couchon," ran by the k.boughton company, was launched in November 2007.
