Matthew Alan "Matt" Beat (born November 6, 1981), better known online as Mr. Beat, is an American YouTuber, musician, podcast host and former social studies teacher known for his videos discussing history, geography, economics and politics that include dry humor.
Beat published a book based on his Presidential Elections in American History series, titled Mr. Beat presents...The Ultimate American Presidential Election Book: Every Presidential Election in American History (1788-2020), in July 2020.[2]
Early life
Matthew Alan Beat[3] was born on November 6, 1981[4] in Topeka, Kansas and was raised Catholic.[5] He went to the University of Kansas, University of Nebraska Omaha, and Emporia State University for college.
YouTube career
Beat originally made videos for his indie pop band Electric Needle Room, where he first uploaded in 2006.[6][7] He also owns the comedy skit channel Zany Time.
He created his YouTube channel in August 2009, though didn't start uploading anything until January 2011. His oldest videos were originally only intended to show his actual students in his classroom, and the original channel name was "Mr. Beat's Social Studies Channel". Once the videos took off, he expanded his content. He now runs numerous video series such as "Compared", "Supreme Court Briefs", and "Presidential Elections In American History", among others. His most popular series is Compared, a geography series which compares two places around the world.
Beat is known as an enthusiast for United States presidential history, with songs about all of the former American presidents and a series chronicling every presidential election in American history. He also occasionally creates historical parody songs and original history songs for his band Electric Needle Room, an indie pop band that Beat plays in, occasionally with other people.[8] Additionally, Beat runs a second channel, "The Beat Goes On" where he mainly focuses on videos on other topics such as music, films, and cultural trends.[9][10] He also co-hosts the podcast "Jobsolete" with Helen Hong which explores jobs of the past.[11] Mr. Beat has notably shown himself to be very critical of conservative YouTube channel PragerU and has made videos reprehending it, including a 7-hour livestream.[12] Beat is known for his dry humor and comedic creativity.
Personal life
He has a wife and two children,[13] and currently lives in Lawrence, Kansas. He was a high school social studies teacher until 2021 when he decided to pursue a career as a full time YouTuber.[14] Prior to becoming a YouTuber, Beat taught various subjects from grades 7 to 12.[15] Beat petitioned in 2015 for former President Barack Obama to visit the school he teaches at,[16] but was not successful. Beat is of mostly English, Welsh, Germanic and French descent, along with more distinct Irish, Scottish, Swedish and Norwegian descent.[17] He has a dog named Patsy and a cat named Ellie, who passed away on December 31, 2021, at the age of 18.[18] Beat has a brother, Steven, with whom he maintains a third channel, Electric Needle Room.[7]
