Perhaps there should be some warning of taking coca-tea out of Peru. I've heard that many countries treat any products of the coca plant as illegal drugs, and taking with you a couple of teabags to enjoy in your home country can get you into serious trobule with the law.

Either I'm absolutely ignorant about the existence of a standard classification of important gastronomies in the world and a reference is missing either this is extremelly funny: "gastronomy (the fifth most important one of the world)" - why not the 4th? :-)

Shouldn't we outsource most of the CIA stuf? It's too many facts that are not so necessary for traveling. It makes the page harder to read.

Yeah, probably. But it's nice having placeholders for stuff until real articles can be written. -- (WT-en) Evan 19:03, 4 Sep 2003 (PDT)

Placeholders are OK, but on the Peruvian page, a begining is already done. Tomorrow, I will have a look what I find to be important and outsource the rest on a new linked page. If you agree. -- Hans

I've removed the most irrelevant stats, the same as I've done on a number of other CIA factbook listings. Some of the rest are probably surpurflous(sp?) too... (WT-en) KJ 00:31, 5 Sep 2003 (PDT)

"superfluous." B-) -- (WT-en) Evan 13:28, 5 Sep 2003 (PDT)

Thank you Karen for proofreading and reviewing. I could not resist and have shortend the statistics part from the factbook. The complete statistic is linked. --- Hans, 5 Sep 2003, 15:26 MEST (13:26 GMT)

I don't even think the link is really all that necessary. If someone needs invasion statistics for Peru, they can find that info elsewhere. We really need the travel info. As an aside: Hans, you should really set up a user account so we can all talk to you! I assume you've been doing all the great work on Peru -- keep up the great work. Also, I wonder if we could move part of this discussion to the factbook import talk page. -- (WT-en) Evan 13:28, 5 Sep 2003 (PDT)

I really like all the Peru content, but I'm having trouble with all the "(department)" article names. Are these needed? According to the naming conventions these geograpical units should be used to distinguish two places with the same name (ie New York the city and New York the state). Is there really more than one of all of these? Or is the department always named after the capital? And if that wasn't enough, wouldn't having (Peru) help too? I'm actually going to open a big can of worms about this one the naming conventions page, but I thought I'd poke at a real example first. (WT-en) Majnoona

Wikivoyage is great! I just added some of my own experiences from Peru last year. However, I strongly disagree with the contention that you will get diarrhoea unless you stay at expensive hotels and be careful about what you eat. This is very different for different parts of the country. In Huaraz, we lived fairly inexpensively, but it was very nice and clean. We used to eat at quite expensive restaurants, yet, we all got diarrhoea, and I got it bad (I did some really serious shitting at 6000 meters... :-) ). We spent some time in Cusco before we went to Huaraz, lived at some inexpensive but very clean and nice youth hostels, and ate at inexpensive restaurants. I returned to Cusco after Huaraz, alone, and 12 hours after returning to Cusco, my stomach was again well. In Cusco, I had no problems eating anything, please see my Cusco and Pisac edits. I'd buy food from kids on the streets, I'd sit down with the locals to have lunch, I'd buy bread through the train windows. That worked absolutely great for me. In the sunday market at Pisac, it became evident why this worked: in the pile of tomatoes, you bet there weren't one single bad one. Really, I've travelled a lot, but I have never seen anything of that quality anywhere else in the world. I'm not logged in. My name is Kjetil Kjernsmo, I'm Norwegian.

Great, the first one who begins to discus the travel related stuff on the Peru pages. Hi, Kjetil, I like your addings to the Cuzco page and the new Pisac page. Concerning the diarrhoea, I just wanted to say that you should reckon with getting it when travelling Peru. Of course, eating food sold on the street may work quite well, if you are lucky. But sometimes, when seeing sellers cleaning their food in the gutter, you could get some kind of bad feeling, anyway. At the other hand, you don't know what happens in the kitchen of a restaurant, either. So, feel free to change my text in order to find a better way to express the hygienical standards. -- (WT-en) Hansm 01:09, 2003 Nov 11 (PST)
Yup, thanks for the response! There are obviously always some things you can do that are stupid, and obviously, you can get it rather bad here and there. I'll try to think of some alternative formulation! -- (WT-en) Kjetil

As a tourism advisor for the region, I know that having a list of reputable tour operators would help travelers escape the many scam sites out there. --(WT-en) Renee

Tour operators should only be listed in the city where they are based. And only certain types of tour operators are allowed to be listed per our policy on tours. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 19:51, 30 July 2009 (EDT)

Thank you, Peter. However, in the policy on tours that you mention above, Wikivoyage specifically mentions the Amazon(aka Peru) as an area that is recommended to list travel tours due to the danger there. I do not read into it that it should be listed in the city.
I would like to add the tour guide list back to this article. Please understand that I am new to Wikivoyage, and I am trying very hard to format everything correctly. None the less, I feel strongly that most travelers should consider using a reputable tour organization when visiting this part of the world. --(WT-en) Renee
I don't think that there is any issue with listing a tour operator that meets the tour guidelines in an article for a place that they offer a tour (provided listings are limited - don't add dozens of listings to different articles), but putting that listing it in the country article seems inappropriate. For example, there are tons of tour operators that will take you through Gates of the Arctic National Park in Alaska, but listing those operators in either the Alaska or United States of America articles would be wrong. In this case, if a tour operator is offering a tour to a specific region of the Amazon, list the operator in the article for that region, NOT for the entire Peru article. -- (WT-en) Ryan (talk) 17:04, 31 July 2009 (EDT)
Good Point, Ryan. Tour operators should be listed only in the most relevant article.--(WT-en) Renee

Section "Tourist Information and Assistance Service"

[edit]
  • I add this section because its and official service for tourist, provided by Promperu and INDECOPI, that are the peruvian goverment officies that gives information about Peru and consumer's protection offices. Iperu is a free and not profitable services.

Just got back from my honeymoon in Peru, absolutely wonderful place. I had found that the payphones were extremely expensive, and that going to a locutorio was the best idea -- the prices were much better. You might want to rephrase my poor text ;)

Regions

[edit]

The majority of Peru's departments make no sense as travel regionsmany of them cover several areas wholly different from each other in terms of culture, topography, climate, vegetation, etc. I therefore split several of the departments across the top-level regions for the country. I would advise against any further subdivisions based on strict administrative department boundarieswe should take time to make sure further subdivisions make sense, and do not muddle the hierarchical organization. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 22:51, 2 February 2009 (EST)

In my opinion it would make more sense to divide by official department rather than unofficial regions. There has been virtually no work done on the unofficial region pages and I think thats probably due to the confusion as to were the borders of these regions lie. Also, using the official departments makes it much easier when using wikivoyage in conjuction with other guides or maps. I think we need to change this.

Unofficial Regions;

Central Coast, Southern Coast, Northern Coast, Southern Sierra, Central Sierra, Northern Sierra, Altiplano, San Martín, Peruvian Amazon, Madre de Dios,

Official Departments;

Amazonas, Ancash, Apurimac, Arequipa, Ayacucho, Cajamarca, Cusco, Huancavelica, Huanuco, Ica, Junin, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Lima, Loreto, Madre de Dios, Moquegua, Pasco, Piura, Puno, San Martin, Tacna, Tumbes, Ucayali,

--(WT-en) Harley Talk 10:01, 13 April 2011 (EST)

Well, the map shows clearly where the boundaries fall, and the official departments are grouped within the unofficial regions because we don't want to have a giant list of links for 24 regions from the main Peru page. (WT-en) texugo 11:50, 13 April 2011 (EDT)

I don't agree at all, theres nothing clear about it and the official departments don't seem to be grouped within the unofficial regions.

Central Coast = Lima. Southern Coast = Ica, some of Arequipa, some of Moquegua and some of Tacna. Northern Coast = Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, some of La Libertad, some of Ancash. Southern Sierra = Cusco, Apurimac, Ayacucho, Junin and Huancavelica. Central Sierra = Huanuco and Pasco. Northern Sierra = Cajamarca and some of La Libertad. Altiplano = Puno, some of Cusco, some of Arequipa, some of Moquegua and some of Tacna. San Martín = San Martin. Peruvian Amazon = Amazonas, Loreto, Ucayali. Madre de Dios = Madre de Dios and maybe some of Cusco.

My point is we could make a south america page where we forget about the borders of all the countries and divide it into regions that we deem fit, for example; desert, mountains, jungle but that might be very confusing for people reading the page. I think we should stick to official regions rather than inventing our own.

--(WT-en) Harley Talk 15:57, 13 April 2011

The difference is that countries have different entrance requirements, currencies, electricity, etc. That's not usually true for sub-country-level administrative regions. And 24 is far too many to list. Could you suggest a way to group the departments that makes more sense? (WT-en) LtPowers 19:49, 13 April 2011 (EDT)
Looking at what has been done for other countries (eg Brazil, USA), a few states or departments have been grouped together to form a larger region, this is one option. Showing the department borders on the existing map is perhaps another option. One advantage of the existing system is that it is remarkably similar to that used by the Lonely Planet. Other systems seem to rely heavily on altitude which wouldn't help us a lot. I can see its a tough one as the different departments and ecological areas don't correspond. This map - http://www.borrones.net/graficos/mapa1.jpg shows department borders and different ecological areas. It is difficult. Looking at the different options I'd suggest doing what has been done for other countries and group several departments together to form larger areas. The current system doesn't seem to use ecological areas or political boundries, basically the only system it seems to have any real similarities to is that which is used by the Lonely Planet.

"Do not drink water from the faucet or wash your teeth with it".... and other paranoia...... You can brush your teeth with the tap water and rinse your mouth with it. "Water from the faucet is made drinkable by boiling it during 5 minutes"............ boiling water in a kettle is sufficient, you don't need to boil it for five minutes unless your really paranoid...... I'm going to go ahead and change this --(WT-en) Harley Talk 20:08, 17 April 2011 (EST)

Lead picture

[edit]

I don't understand why is the Misti volcano the main picture. I have been living in Peru for some years and most Peruvians don't identify themselves with it. It is actually taken as symbol by the city of Arequipa; people from this city always joke about them being different from the rest of Peru and even about getting to be an independent state (as silly as it can sound). So, could someone explain why is THAT picture the first picture one sees when opening the Peru page? (WT-en) Ana.r 05:24, 26 May 2012 (EDT)

Feel free to propose a more iconic image. (WT-en) LtPowers 10:58, 26 May 2012 (EDT)

Where to local/Spanish phrases belong?

There are a few slang words listed under Peru#Learn, which isn't the proper use of that section.

Canadians stranded in Cusco due to COVID-19

[edit]

I see in the papers (https://calgaryherald.com/news/former-calgarian-stranded-in-peru-with-no-certainty-of-flight-home/) that hundreds of Canadians are stranded in Cusco, Peru, and I would like to add this information on this page. How does one do this? Thanks n advance, Ottawahitech (talk) 00:12, 31 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Just summarize the story, but I think that would be in the Cuzco article, and I'm not sure what the right section is. Stay safe? Ikan Kekek (talk) 00:22, 31 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
What would be added? It's not just Canadians there, and I don't think they'll be looking to Wikivoyage for information about their situation, but to the embassies in Lima. Wikivoyage isn't a newspaper or an encyclopedia. Ground Zero (talk) 00:25, 31 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Regions discussion (2024)

[edit]

The previous regions discussion for Peru (#Regions) didn't seem to go very far. User:AnniAriel has proposed an alternative, based on physiographic regions. Which map makes most sense for travellers? Ground Zero (talk) 13:41, 17 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

The descriptions of the natural regions can be found here. @SHB2000, Ikan Kekek: Ground Zero (talk) 13:59, 17 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. Just in case and if it might help: Pulgar Vidal, Javier (1987). Geografía del Perú [Geography of Peru (9th ed.)] (in Spanish). PEISA. ISBN 84-599-6883-9. AnniAriel (talk) 13:45, 17 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Current map of 10 regions
Peruvian natural regions -- 9 regions
Thanks for providing the maps. I don't know enough about Peru to have an opinion on this question, but I'd ask you a question: Are natural divisions always the most useful ones for travelers, or might political or demographic (ethnic, urban/rural) divisions be more useful sometimes? Ikan Kekek (talk) 14:39, 17 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think it would be very difficult to plan a trip using these regions. The current regions organize our city and town articles in a way that travellers can plan to travel from the yo another. In the promised regions, Suni region, in particular, is spread out across the country. It likely does not have any cities or towns for which we have articles. Ground Zero (talk) 17:34, 17 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
If that's the problem, I can start them. Just give me a little bit of time. AnniAriel (talk) 02:06, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
However, it's important that travellers know about them because of weather, roads, and cities characteristics in each one of them. Could it be possible to add this region information like a plus instead of erasing it?. AnniAriel (talk) 01:59, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Weather, roads and so forth can be covered in city and existing region articles. Ikan Kekek (talk) 02:13, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
To me, Sr. Pulgar Vidal's natural regions belong in the Wikipedia article. I don't think that they are useful for travellers. Ground Zero (talk) 02:21, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
And, in fact, they are in w:Geography of Peru. Ground Zero (talk) 02:23, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
True, however if travelers know the specifics details of each region, they are somehow able to optimize their itineraries and prepare adequately, regarding clothes, transport, housing among others. They can also know about the different activities presented in each one of the regions in general. I get when you said some of this information can be covered in cities articles - however, some of these articles are very poor on information, and some other, didn't exist at all. Same thing with the region articles. AnniAriel (talk) 02:28, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Lack of information can be remedied by adding it. Ikan Kekek (talk) 02:37, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think I prefer the current regions simply due to the complexity of the proposed natural regions. Having that many enclaves and exclaves in our region structure isn't a good idea. SHB2000 (t | c | m) 11:26, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

@AnniAriel: I have added information to the region articles that I have collected from other language versions of Wikivoyage and from Wikipedia. Can you add other information to make these articles better? Ground Zero (talk) 11:00, 25 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Especially as the physiographic regions span several of our regions, I think it would be good to have some of the information on them in a subsection Climate (in Understand) of the country article. At present, that section is missing. –LPfi (talk) 05:35, 27 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I have added a high-level summary adapted from Wikipedia. I think that any more detail should go into the region articles. Ground Zero (talk) 10:34, 27 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. –LPfi (talk) 05:12, 28 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
So the main article will not have the Geography section, I understand, even though other countries do have it. Is there any article on Peruvian Geography? I want to add a list of the national parks or natural reserves we have here. I was planning to do it in the Peru article, but I don't want anyone to erase the information because it's not the right place or one person believes it's not essential data for travelers, even though there are other articles with the same information here. Additionally, it's not easy to write an article for the wiki (considering time, sources, style, etc.). Let me know. Thanks. AnniAriel (talk) 16:41, 29 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Information about national parks could only be summarized in an article for an entire country. If a park merits its own article and doesn't have one, please start one and use the Wikivoyage:Park article template. If you'd like to create an overall article about the national parks and reserves in Peru, that could also be a fine idea. There are various preexisting "National parks of (name of country)" articles. If any still have too many images and unnecessary blank space, don't emulate that but instead have a look at Wikivoyage:Image policy#Minimal use of images, but otherwise, please plunge forward with my blessing if you've got good information to share.
I didn't forget your question about geography. I'm struggling to see how an entire article about Peruvian geography would be a travel article. I think a brief subsection on geography in this article would be fine, as long as it's easy for anyone to understand and doesn't contain any jargon, or it could also be covered along with climate and/or regions. Ikan Kekek (talk) 17:20, 29 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your kind response. My idea was not to include a lot of information about geography, but to add a bit more since there were only two lines about the relief. Anyway, I will add the information about the national parks in the main article about Peru. Please be so kind as to check it out and let me know if there are any changes to make before erasing it. Thanks in advance. AnniAriel (talk) 18:10, 29 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@AnniAriel: I understand that you are upset that your original edits to the Peru article were erased, but I ask that you try to understand two things:
1. as I wrote on your talk page, your edit changed the region structure without any discussion. This meant that readers would no longer be able to navigate to find articles about cities, towns and parks in Peru by clicking in links, other than the top 9 cities and top 9 other destinations.
2. I think that the information you added was too detailed for a travel guide. I would be useful to have a summary of the important points about the geography or Peru, without having the same level of detail that is in w:Geography of Peru.
An article on the National parks and natural reserves of Peru would be a useful addition to this travel guide. I would be happy to help with the formatting of such an article. Ground Zero (talk) 21:38, 29 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Departments of Peru

[edit]

Good morning everyone, I have one question to ask. I would really like to know if posting the 24 departments of Peru would be wrong in the main article on Peru. My question arises because, when checking the part about regions, it talks about the Amazonas region. However, I believe this region is incorrectly named, as it does not cover the Amazonas department, which is also a great place to visit in Peru with many attractions to offer to travelers. I am committed to starting this new article, if that matters. I will be looking forward to your answer. AnniAriel (talk) 13:38, 26 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

The Peruvian Amazon region includes the departments of Loreto, Ucayali, Amazonas, Madre de Dios, Huanuco and San Martin. Why not add information on the Amazonas department to the Peruvian Amazon article to make it better? If ot becomes to big, then it could be split up into subregions. But for now, subdividing is not necessary.
The departments are important for the administration of Peru, but they are not important to travellers. I was fortunate to spend one month in Peru, but it did not matter to me which department I was in. I visited Iquitos, but I didn't know or care which department it was in. To me, it was in the Peruvian Amazon.
As I mentioned on your talk page, the country article should list 5-9 cities. Listing 24 places is not the style for country articles that the Wikivoyage community has decided on. See Wikivoyage:Avoid long lists. (You can propose changes to Wikivoyage style at any time.) Ground Zero (talk) 14:19, 26 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Would you consider Peru Hop touting?

[edit]

Are changes contributed by user @Elenaborshch considered touting? What's community's perspective?

As far as I can see, that user made plenty of contributions across Peru-related articles, promoting Peru Hop business.

In particular, Peru Hop got listed as first in Peru#By bus 2 (for whatever reason).

Other affected articles include:

It is hard to know what edits made in 2017 were seen as touting, but Special:Diff/3342994/3343234 and the followup Special:Diff/3343416/3343730 indeed seem at least a bit touty. Why do you ask now? Don't you agree? Or do you suggest that the mentions should be tweaked or removed? You could do that without discussion in the obvious cases. For me, not knowing how transport works in Peru, it is hard to judge how beneficial those mentions are and whether the comparison to ordinary buses is fair. –LPfi (talk) 12:17, 24 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi @LPfi, I wanted to get a second opinion, as I'm not a regular wikivoyage editor.
I've stumbled upon this "Peru Hop" bonanza while doing a research for my trip to Peru. I find these mentions a bit pushy and promotion-oriented, and I think they should be tweaked.
I'll go through affected articles and see what I can do, thank you! 2A01:110F:4816:6100:2B47:EA72:4A9:43E0 21:16, 24 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
