Hi! It seems you recently created an unreferenced biography of a living person: Johan Sjöstrand. The community has decided that all new biographies of living persons must contain a reliable source that supports at least one statement made about the person in the article as per our verifiability policy. Please add references as soon as possible. Thanks! --LaraBot (talk) 00:10, 27 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The article Johan Sjöstrand has been proposed for deletion because under Wikipedia policy, all biographies of living persons created after March 18, 2010, must have at least one source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't take offense. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners or ask at Wikipedia:Help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within ten days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. Lakota Wikipedia

[edit]

Lundgren8, Thank you for your interest and efforts in regard to the Lakota language version of Wikipedia; they are much appreciated! It has been quite a while since I have actively participated in the Wikimedia community. My knowledge of the Lakota language is also VERY basic. Please edit it and improve upon it as you see fit. If I think of anything to contribute and have time, I would like to get back into the Wikimedia Foundation to my previous level. Once again, thanks and happy editing!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Tonemes in Swedish IPA

[edit]

Hello. That edit was not correct - Help:IPA for Swedish uses the double stress [ˈɡamːˈla] to denote the second toneme, not a literal double primary stress (although there's a strong secondary stress on [-la]}}). Martin sv 85 (talk) 10:49, 24 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, it is not commonplace to use the primary stress mark to denote the second toneme when transcribing Swedish. It can easily be taken, as you say, as a literal double primary stress. In the literature, a grave accent mark or a superscript digit is usually used. Best, --Lundgren8 (t · c) 10:52, 24 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That may be true, but we'd need to take that to Help talk:IPA for Swedish. Personally, I have nothing against using a superscript 2 to indicate the second toneme, but it'd be better if we had a consensus first. Martin sv 85 (talk) 10:53, 24 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I had not seen that it was the standard at Help talk:IPA for Swedish to use that type of transcription. I have not encountered it before and it is in my opinion incorrect. A double high pitch curve (which is what characterizes the 2nd toneme) is not the same thing as a double stress. That is, high pitch does not always equal stress, it’s just perceived as such since we are used to marking stress with a high pitch in many Western European languages. In reality, there is only one stress in that word. Best, --Lundgren8 (t · c) 10:56, 24 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, we have good arguments to boldly change it without asking more people. I also haven't encountered such transcription in sources other than Wikipedia. Ok, so:
- Words with the second toneme use the superscript 2 instead of the stress mark: [²ɡamːla]
- We mark the secondary stress in longer words (be it with toneme 1 or 2), so [²stuːʂøː.ʊˌjʉːrɛ]
- Words with the first toneme use the ordinary stress mark.
Is that right? Martin sv 85 (talk) 11:36, 24 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That looks like quite a good solution to me. Another solution would be using e.g. [gámːla]. I recommend Tomas Riad’s Swedish phonology as source which is very thorough when it comes to prosody and word accents. --Lundgren8 (t · c) 11:39, 24 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'm aware of Riad (2014), but thanks. I think [²ɡamːla] is more neutral, as [²] doesn't tell you how to realize the second toneme (there are a few ways, right?) Anyway, I'll look around and will probably start introducing our transcription soon. I'll start with Help:IPA for Swedish and Swedish phonology. Maybe you can take a look at the transcriptions on Swedish phonology#Sample, I'm probably not knowledgable enough to edit those. Martin sv 85 (talk) 12:02, 24 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The grave accent mark does not tell you have it’s realised either, it’s derived from the fact that the 2nd toneme is usually called ”grave accent” in Swedish, and is therefore marked with a grave accent, but it’s fully understandable that it can be confused with a raising tone. I’ll have a look later. Best, --Lundgren8 (t · c) 12:05, 24 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks. Last question: both försal and spärrnät have the second toneme, correct? Martin sv 85 (talk) 12:20, 24 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Correct, and secondary stress. --Lundgren8 (t · c) 12:38, 24 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Do you think we need to mark the secondary stress in disyllabic words? The superscript 2 can be easily understood to mean [ˈâˌâ]. The confusion arises only in words with more than two syllables. Martin sv 85 (talk) 13:33, 24 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it’s not really necessary, but there are disyllabic accent 2 words both with and without secondary stress. If you mark accent, I don’t think it would be unusual to mark secondary stress as well. --Lundgren8 (t · c) 14:26, 24 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article Mihangel has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable first name, not suitable as disambig as only one subject with this name presently has an article.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ♠PMC(talk) 23:38, 14 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Articulatory setting!

[edit]

Sir! Peter Roach having written in English Phonetics and Phonology that it is difficult to confirm these settings scientifically and etc, I do not understand why there is no information about lack of scientific proofs. I am a reader of EnWiki, and, to tell you the exact truth, I think it to be very important to describe all points of views on that. You having edited the article on that, I do not understand why you have not added this point. I believe you to think this conception to be doubtful, therefore there is a controversy. That's why it is evident that the afore-said article is not completely correct. The article being incomplete, I cannot transcribe it.

In a word, I pray you to lay down the conventional point of view in the following article. The phrase Non-native speakers typically find the basis of articulation one of the greatest challenges in acquiring a foreign language's pronunciation. Speaking with the basis of articulation of their own native language results in a foreign accent, even if the individual sounds of the target language are produced correctly. seems not to be conventional.Роман Сидоров (г. Смоленск) (talk) 08:47, 10 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Popularity

[edit]

Sir! Having an intention to write an article concerning teaching English pronunciation, methinks, it seems to be exceedingly important to know tha authors of the most popular SBs in your country. I think, these are Ann Baker "Tree or three", "Ship or sheep"; English Pronunciation in Use ; Get rid of your accent; O'Connor and Fletcher "Sounds English Am I right, sir?Роман Сергеевич Сидоров (talk) 10:40, 15 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
