Does it really make it easier to edit? I don't see how that can be the case. Furthermore, as I pointed out at Talk:2014 FIFA World Cup Group A, the parameters in the template are extremely inflexible and don't allow for any modifications if needed. This isn't meant as a criticism, but your only argument appears to be WP:ILIKEIT. – PeeJay 13:06, 12 June 2014 (UTC)

I still don't see how the template is easier to use than the wikitable format. It's not exactly hard to understand, and when the template includes so many complicated parameters, that makes the template even less palatable. You say it's tedious to keep repeating the tables over and over, but I don't see how the template remedies that. – PeeJay 15:23, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
I think any user with a modicum of common sense would be able to work it out just by looking at previous years. Plus there are plenty of experienced editors on hand to correct any minor errors they may make. Creating a template is just making a mountain out of a molehill. – PeeJay 15:50, 12 June 2014 (UTC)

Brazil v Croatia line-ups

According to the FourFourTwo StatsZone app, which is run by reputable stats company Opta, Neymar started in the centre. All the references I heard in the commentary were to Hulk and Oscar playing on the wings, and they regularly swapped sides. It is true that the Mexican federation have announced their intended line-up, but until the team sheets are submitted to the referee and published on the FIFA website, nothing is fixed. Surname order

Re this edit, perhaps you need to take your own adice and read the article you cite. It states, perfectly clearly, Dutch names in English directories (e.g. reference lists of scientific papers) may be ordered on the full name including all prefixes (Van Rijn would be ordered under 'V'). This is an English language article, so it follows the conventions of English. Kevin McE (talk) 12:30, 20 June 2014 (UTC)

@Kevin McE: I did "take my own advice" and the article continues: partly because many Dutch emigrant families to English-speaking countries have had their prefixes capitalized for them, whether they liked it or not, like Martin Van Buren or Steve Van Dyck, and normal practise in English is to order on the first capitalized element. As you said, it's an English language article, so it follows the conventions of English. Davykamanzitalkcontribsalter ego 13:53, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
The fact is what is relevant, not the explanation. The fact is that English lists by surname, inclusive of prepositions. WP:Namesort defaults to a resource that is unequivocal on the matter. Kevin McE (talk) 14:13, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
@Kevin McE: You've contradicted yourself by referencing that article. In WP:NAMESORT § Other exceptions, it says:

Generally, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish names do not include lowercase particles in sorting, but do include uppercase particles. For example, Otto von Bismarck is sorted , Jean de La Fontaine is sorted , and Alberto Di Chiara is sorted .

I think that's pretty clear. Davykamanzitalkcontribsalter ego 14:23, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
That is preceded by "Whether or not to include the particle in sorting can be up to the individual's personal preference, traditional cultural usage or the customs of one's nationality." The culture of en.wikipedia is anglophone, so anglophone customs are relevant. Kevin McE (talk) 14:30, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
@Kevin McE: If that was the case, Otto von Bismarck would be sorted in articles as instead of . And as it points out "up to the individual's personal preference, traditional cultural usage or the customs of one's nationality". Given that the culture of en.wikipedia is indeed anglophone, the exclusion of "von" when sorting "Otto von Bismarck" is the customs of his (von Bismarck's) nationality and/or the individual's personal preference. The same goes for Robin van Persie or any other player with a lowercase prefix in their name. Davykamanzitalkcontribsalter ego 14:36, 20 June 2014 (UTC)

Lineup files.

Hello, mate. I have figured out how to do it know but just a few more questions to ask you if you don't mind just so that all the line-ups mate. 1) How come my pitch is a darker green then yours. 2) What font do you use. 3) What size font do you us.

Really appreciate all the help you have given.

Skyblueshaun (talk) 17:17, 22 June 2014 (UTC)

@Skyblueshaun: If you used File:Empty soccer line-up.svg or any of the other WC line-up files as a template your pitch shouldn't have been darker or your font different. All you have to do is edit the text (without changing the font; should be Verdana or something), change the colours of the jerseys and move the names+jerseys in their correct positions. No, the image isn't free. The Flickr page even links to the site it came from, which doesn't clearly state anywhere what kind of licence the image was released under. There's no meta data attached to the image on Flickr, which makes it even more suspect. People often upload copyrighted images on Flickr under incorrect licences, and this looks like one of them. – PeeJay 20:24, 23 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi Davykamanzi ! How are you ? I send you this little message because I will try, soon, the article on Uruguay during the World Cup 2002 in french (Équipe d'Uruguay de football à la Coupe du monde 2002). Can you make the line-ups of Uruguay's three matchs during this competition please ? Thanks. Have a nice day ! Supporterhéninois (talk) 23:57, 28 June 2014 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Gringe Art Rock 2014.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Gringe Art Rock 2014.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. It appears that you tried to give Template:User Linkin Park/logo a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into another page with a different name. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

CECAFA Cup

Hi Davykamanzi, I saw that a little while ago you did some editing on CECAFA Cup topics. Would you be interested in seeing how many CECAFA Cup related pages we could get to GA? Thanks, Matty.007 14:18, 18 July 2014 (UTC)

@Matty.007: Sure but it could be a bit tedious since sources on CECAFA Cup topics aren't that many. Davykamanzitalkcontribsalter ego 16:03, 18 July 2014 (UTC)
Well, 1973 CECAFA Cup is already at GA (a little short though due to lack of sources). I was thinking maybe the central page and the years 2000-present. 2006 is at GAR, 2003 is at GAN. What do you think? Thanks, Matty.007 16:37, 18 July 2014 (UTC)
@Matty.007: If 1973's at GA, then 2012 and 2013 should be at GA as well surely? 2012 Kagame Interclub Cup as well. Otherwise yeah it's very possible. Davykamanzitalkcontribsalter ego 16:40, 18 July 2014 (UTC)
There isn't much info on '73. What say you we do years 2000-2014 first then more central articles? Thanks, Matty.007 17:24, 18 July 2014 (UTC)

Yes, where your proposal had ZERO input from editors if you exclude those you messaged. Did that not tell you anything i.e. that page has only 18 watchers (many of whom are no doubt no longer active). GiantSnowman 17:33, 22 July 2014 (UTC)
@GiantSnowman: Be that as it may, WP:FOOTY/TFSP says five editors is a good level of interest to start a task force; we have five people and over 10 or so other potential members. Template:BD ToC

It's not working where you added it to 2013. (It's also adding a lot of whitespace. Please hold off adding it elsewhere. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 23:01, 24 July 2014 (UTC)

I've changed my mind. I'm just going to revert all your edits to year articles. The datadumps into births clearly fail WP:RY, and the templates won't work without the datadumps. Please experiment with the navigation templates outside of mainspace.
Actually, I do have an idea what might be done to get the templates to work. If you add invisible anchors such as "Births January" to the births, then a version of the template could work. I'll suggest that at WT:YEARS. It could probably be done by a bot, if consensus was obtained. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 01:46, 25 July 2014 (UTC)

I'm sorry about the tone of my previous comments, although not the substance. Your actions at 1996 caused more damage than the benefit your templates may produce. 1996 was a mess: before your data dump into births, there was a previous data dump of April deaths. I'll restore your templates, if I can get them to work, but I'm afraid that, because of your datadump of births, I cannot trust your other edits to be competent. The article is probably too long, as it is, and your dump added about 55%. However, I got the 2013 template to work, by declaring it to be "Births" (_2), rather than deaths (_3). Hence the template would work on 2014 except that the deaths for months which haven't happened yet will not link. Perhaps another parameter to the template, indicating the number of months to issue (default 12)?

If you can explain the intricacies of the template, possibly formatting with invisible line breaks, I may be able to help you to get it to work, even without the invisible anchors. I can't figure out how to quote it, but look how the text below displays:

abcldefghi

Arthur Rubin (talk) 04:59, 25 July 2014 (UTC)

@Arthur Rubin: The template's code is actually quite messy if I'm honest. The most complex part of it is the if's with the separate sections, so using invisible line breaks would be most useful there. The rest of it is quite simple. Davykamanzitalkcontribsalter ego 09:47, 25 July 2014 (UTC)
@Arthur Rubin: I've simplified the intricacies on the template code. If it's fine or there's anything else to be dealt with regarding it let me know. Davykamanzitalkcontribsalter ego 10:12, 25 July 2014 (UTC)

About the reverts on edits about removal of the "fb team" templates

Hello, good night!

So, about my edits on some season pages where I replaced the use of some fb team templates by some that use direct wikilinks, I did because the WikiProject Football achieved consensus on their deletion here and on other previous discussions too. The idea is that the normal wikilinks can be used instead of these templates. However, as many fb team templates are still in use, they can't all be deleted in one "touch". They must be replaced, however the project still haven't got a bot that can do it. I have finished the replacement and cleanup for the conmebol countries, and did for some of the AFC/CAF countries, which I'm in the middle of it.

I use this account (Gno-simple-edits) mostly to do these type of edits and then nominate the templates for deletion, so my contributions log doesn't get full of repeated edits to pages. Feel free to contact me on this account or on the User:GNozaki account, and thank you for your attention

I think I've got the sandbox working, but it has different actions in some cases:

  • I only check for parameters 3-13 (alternate section names) if section 2 is set; you seem to have a different test. In other words, in my version, if parameter 2 is set, then I display:
    1. Parameter 2
    2. Parameter 3, if Parameter 3 is set
    3. Parameter 4, if Parameter 4 is set (ignoring parameter 3)
    4. ...
  • If parameter 2 is set, "months" is ignored. I think you test "months" first, and only take that number of alternate parameters if set
  • If parameter 2 is set, I still set the "default" section to 2/3. (I can set the default section to "off" or 1 if you prefer.) You turned off section handling entirely. It seems quite possible that for earlier years in the 20th century, both "Births" and "Deaths" are by quarter, so the names will conflict.
  • I think I turned off overall centering of the box. As most of the text is toward the left, it makes sense for the box to be to the left.
  • I also removed the NTOC. We still need ToC to level 2.
  • I'm not sure about the clear. That may be what's putting the extra line spacing at the end, if there's something else to the right.

Arthur Rubin (talk) 04:29, 26 July 2014 (UTC)

@Arthur Rubin: First off, I'm gonna say I think the box should be centered since it's a Compact ToC, and without the clear the text was wrapping around the ToC. The removal of the NTOC seems fine to me.
  • I think the biggest task we're faced with is to find out what's causing the ToC to show raw code instead of wikilinking parameters 2–13. Once we discover that everything becomes easier and we can sort it out faster.
  • Regarding the "months", I'm not sure whether it's necessary to include conditional expressions in the main template, since all of that is done in the subtemplate. Other than that I'm still not sure why it's ignored when parameter 2 is set. I think I'll need a bit more time to figure that out.
I'm gonna do some more tweaking in the sandbox and see how it goes then I'll let you know. Davykamanzitalkcontribsalter ego 11:14, 26 July 2014 (UTC)
  • If parameter 2 is set then the first link name is that parameter; why should the months parameter or the actual months get involved. As I see it, the template has two modes; "months" (seen by the absence of parameter 2 (or possibly the presence of the parameter "months", but that seems to complicate things), in which all the output tags are months; or literal, usually triggered by parameter 2 being present, in which case the "months" parameter and the actual months should have nothing to do with the output.
  • There are many ways to operate with subtemplates. I chose to calculate all the tags, the title, and the default section in the main template, the parsing being done in the "main" subtemplate. I considered using a subsubtemplate to process each tag, so that we can easily see the rendering works the same way. (For a while in testing, there was a stray "}" in the section7 code in "main"; but the call to the subtemplate is longer than the full rendering of the conditionals. On the other hand, the subsubtemplate would be: {{{#if||{{{#if:{}||}}}{}}}}
  • My understanding is that at least, when I noticed the problem, there was a pipe symbol (|) within the #if statements. Careful study of the manual shows that those must be replaced by , which is replaced by |, but after the #if statements are done. Otherwise, the | gets parsed by the #if statement, which is not what was intended. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 15:03, 26 July 2014 (UTC)
  • "center=" is an option in Compact ToC. I suppose we could make it an option here, as well. ("right=" makes no sense for this template.) — Arthur Rubin (talk) 15:11, 26 July 2014 (UTC)

List of football clubs in Africa

Hello davikamanzi i've seen now some pages about List of football clubs in Africa, and there are some problems in my opinion. The pages have not a good standard, some lists are in this order :List of clubs by major honours won, 15 lists are in this order:List of clubs by alphabetical order (HOW THE CATEGORY PAGE) and two or three lists(Kenya) are in this order : The following is a list of association football clubs currently participating in the top two tiers of the football league system:.

In my opinion the best solution is use a alphabetical order for all the african football clubs lists (3) and fix the different lists.

Example:4, List of football clubs in Tunisia These are the better page in my opinion.--Lglukgl (talk) 00:09, 2 August 2014 (UTC)

So what should we do? What type of order do you prefer?

  • 1 alphabetical?
  • 2 Kenya list style?
  • 3 by major honours won?
@Lglukgl: I think listing them in alphabetical order is better. Davykamanzitalkcontribsalter ego 08:17, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

Processing results

I see you took on processing results on the 2014 World Junior Championships in Athletics. A few other people (including me) did the same thing with mixed results, but stopped because it is a lot of work. While I see you did a few corrections after the initial processing, you got the bulk of your work done in one step (I assume from the original source of the IAAF results documents) and your work was good. What is your processing method? Is there software available that will translate the bulk of this repetitive layout work into wiki format? Please let me know. Maybe we should let others know because this situation will keep coming up. Trackinfo (talk) 19:40, 2 August 2014 (UTC)

@Trackinfo: I wish such a software existed but unfortunately I've been processing the results the hard way and it is a lot of work. There should be templates that replace those repetitive tables but I'm sure they're around somewhere. Davykamanzitalkcontribsalter ego 08:16, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Kenyan English, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Flip-flop. Replaceable fair use File:Gringe (Casseurs Flowters).jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Gringe (Casseurs Flowters).jpg.

Thank you. January (talk) 10:23, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

Hello!

Before you again revert my edits and report me for WP:3RR i ask you if you allow me to add sources to the unsourced honours and change the order of the honours to make it better readable and looking? I promise i don´t delete anything of your contributions. Chelsea-fan1 (talk) 11:58, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

@Chelsea-fan1: All the honours except the Chelsea Players' Player of the Year award are already adequately sourced, and the club honours don't need to be sourced. You don't need to change the order of the honours either because they're supposed to be in chronological order (earliest first). If you want to move the references you can add prose to the section, like in the Thierry Henry article, but the references that are there are already enough.
