[edit]

Would you please add some image in Chemical engineering. I've added an image from another article. As you are professional engineer please try to expand the article. Thank you. Tanvir che (talk) 17:06, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Because chemical engineering covers such a vast range and is actually an abstract (we design processes, other people make the objects which operate the processes) I have some difficulty in thinking what would be suitable. For personal reasons, I do not wish to make use of images from my professional work. Chemical Engineer (talk) 18:12, 2 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why Jimmy's?

[edit]

Do any of your sources explain just why the hospital was named after St James? (Was it a local church? Which of the umpteen Saints? etc!). Just wondered if you might know as you've just added to the article. Cheers, PamD (talk) 16:03, 21 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not yet. I have only had a quick delve in the library while shopping. I plan to do some more Leeds local history this Summer. Chemical Engineer (talk) 16:07, 21 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
And as you will see, I have now found who the two Jimmies were and added this to the article. Chemical Engineer (talk) 19:41, 15 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've added refs to the relevant articles, showing that Adamiecki was indeed the originator of an idea. It just goes to underline that if you don't publish in English (or at least German or French), you might as well not bother... (see also Michał Kalecki for another example).--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 20:28, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Przepraszam,

I believe you are confusing priority with cause. The Michał Kalecki page is also special pleading rather than NPOV. What tends to happen is that at a certain stage in culture, different people have similar ideas because they are looking at the same problem. Do your reference books specifically state how Henry Gantt got to hear of Adamiecki's unpublished work and then stole it? If so, it is legitimate to say the Gantt chart is a modified Harmonogram. If they just assert it or note it was around earlier, then it is a slander on Gantt. I was about to write (based on the Marsh article which I have) what the harmonogram was and how it was superior, but I don't think I'll bother now. (And why does the Polish Wikipedia not have a decent article on the harmonogram?)Chemical Engineer (talk) 20:46, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You can read the linked book excerpts yourself (I have provided Google Book links to specific pages) and decide whether they support this formulation (as I believe they do). I have used English sources, I could look for some Polish ones that may go into the details (and I have not bothered with Google Scholar yet, but I can, if you want me to). Why is Polish Wiki worse? Well, it has fewer editors to work on it. PS. I have c/e the articles; it is indeed not correct to imply any form of plagiarism with the refs at hand. What they do support is that Adamiecki invented the idea but did not popularize it in the West. It is not clear whether Gantt knew of Adamiecki's work or not (it would be interesting to go to his publications and look whether he mentions Adamiecki anywhere), but he popularized it and it is attributed to him.--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 20:49, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Don't agree. They indicate independent invention on the pages you cite. Only the first reference (is the author by any chance of Polish origin?) in any way asserts they are the same, but does not give a reason on the page you cite. I stand by my statement that (for the purposes of an encylopedia entry) the most which can be confidently said is that the Harmonogram is similar to the Gantt chart.Chemical Engineer (talk) 21:15, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Feel free to rewrite the sections, we will see if it is better. Also, if you do create the article on harmonogram, we can see if it is a better invention than the Gantt chart or not.--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 22:09, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of Arthur B. Metzner

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Arthur B. Metzner requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. Woland (talk) 23:01, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've declined the speedy deletion - Notability of the academic was asserted. Nice job. Toddst1 (talk) 23:06, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Roundhay

[edit]
Street Lane, Roundhay

Please stop removing this image. Your nuisance edits are tantamount to vandalism. Please consider before doing so that placing the photograph on the right hand side, in general text would upset the page layout. If you prefer it in the box of images at the bottom then please move it there, rather then remove it altogeter. Surely if this was the case, then the chuch in the history section should also be relocated to the religion section. Mtaylor848 (talk) 17:43, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You have placed a picture of Street Lane as the main image of a section marked "History". It has no particular relevance and provides no added value to the section. I appreciate your enthusiasm for North Leeds, but think you are being impolite to call my edits nuisance and vandalism.

The building of St John's Church was an important part of the history of the area, and illustrates the adjacent text. Churches are facts in history, and I support the Wikipedia NPOV.Chemical Engineer (talk) 17:59, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

While I would agree with you that the church is a historical building, surely it has to be linked in for a reason. If you prefer the picture elsewhere there is a gallery at the bottom. Considering Street Lane is Roundhay's main street, and besides the park and mansion, the shops on it are probably its best known buildings, a photograph of them is surely required to enhance the article. Ideally the photograph would be put on the right under the info box, but this would disorientate the layout (as is a problem with many pages). The picture could be moved to the top and placed on the left, alternatively it could be put in the info box and the park picture tied in with the park section. Mtaylor848 (talk) 18:05, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The picture of the church of St John is adjacent to text about its construction and effect on the area, which was considerable. Your picture of Street Lane you have put adjacent to text about the Doomsday book. Which is more appropriate?Chemical Engineer (talk)

License tagging for File:HowToBeAnAlien.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:HowToBeAnAlien.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 22:05, 26 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Malvern College

[edit]

Hi Chemical Engineer! The Old Malvernians/alumnae section that you contributed to in Malvern College finally got so long that it had to be split off into a separate list page. In doing so, it's been found that for many of those noble people there is no actual proof that they ever went to the school. However, they probably did, and the entries were made in good faith. Nevertheless, the rules require everything in the encyclopedia to be verifiably sourced. It would be great therefore, if you could take a look at the list and help out if you can with providing some references. The people all have their own Wiki articles, but it is no guarantee that the mentions of Malvern College (if any) are correctly cited. Thanks. --Kudpung (talk) 17:01, 10 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your edits made on March 17, 2010 (UTC) to List of Mensans

[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute to the encyclopedia, but when you add or change content, as you did to the article List of Mensans, please cite a reliable source for the content of your edit. This is particularly important when adding or changing any facts or figures and helps maintain our policy of verifiability. Take a look at Wikipedia:Citing sources for information about how to cite sources and the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. 71.166.152.95 (talk) 17:13, 17 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know who you are, but Jack Cohen is said to be a Mensan in his article, as with others in the list. I see no reason to duplicate the reference.Chemical Engineer (talk) 18:48, 18 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The reason is Verifiability ... just because someone "is said to be a Mensan in their article" is insufficient ... you need to quote a Reliable source for this kind of thing every place that it is mentioned because of Biographies of living persons ... see here and here for some history of this article (my comments from 2007). As for who I am, follow the prominent links on my User and Talk pages to User:The Bipolar Anon-IP Gnome ... now you know more about me than I know about you, as if that means anything here. — 71.166.152.95 (talk) 20:06, 18 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Thanks for tidying up my recent edits to the Arthur Dehon Little article. The Servos article on the history of Chemical Engineering at MIT 1900-1939 was interesting and pertinent to Little, so that's why I added it. A good read. You are now a Reviewer

[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 19:24, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

St James's

[edit]

The misguided editor who moved the article to a "correct" title did the same for a Dublin hospital St James's Hospital. I'd like to WP:AGF, but that requires that we assume a stubborn refusal to recognise that all previous editors to the articles were getting it right! I've stuck a note into the article text of each of them, to try to dissuade similar moves in future. Sorry about the duplicated ref - thanks for tidying it up. Sorry for not asking you, but I was amazed that the article is that short and no image of the McLeod gauge. My boss showed me one and he said: This is a McLeod gauge!! And you know we have two of them! Making fun of the "There can be only one," catch phrase of Highlander (film).--Stone (talk) 22:49, 13 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There was an article about the gauge with a picture, so I thought it worthwhile having one about the inventor. As there is a separate article, I did not think it worth having the picture here as well. What would be nice would be a picture of Herbert.Chemical Engineer (talk) 22:58, 13 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Alumni notice

[edit]

Hi, with regard to this deletion, you might be misunderstanding the extent of the {{alumni}} template. This is not just a question of notability but also whether these people really are verifiable as alumni. The blue linked articles may or may not be for the right person intended, their associated citations and article titles may change over time and so currently or in the future they might have no references that confirm whether they are an alumnus. See the guidance of WP:NLIST and the essay at User:Fæ/Alumni. Unless there is a clear rationale as to why this article might be an exception I propose the template is re-added with its original date. Thanks -- (talk) 13:45, 24 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

King Edward's School, Birmingham

[edit]

Thank you for ‘reducing’ my opinion statements.

1. Would you consider re-inserting the word ‘rare’. Two of the surnames in question were ‘Sacret’ and ‘Honeybone’. I suggest that both these names are unquestionably rare; and that their selection by Rudkin must have been deliberate, thereby justifying the use of the word ‘rare’. What do you think?

2. "Coe (OE c1972-1979) has said that he has set out to geographically identify Birmingham as a specific place, something which he claims is never done in English literature for places other than London". This comes from a published interview with Coe some time ago; regrettably I can no long locate it. Flying Stag (talk) 19:22, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your contributions to and co-operation with the BGS articles - especially images. I was hoping to get down there this coming weekend to take some photographs when there is nobody around but, of course, am not sure if I will make it or the weather will be helpful and photogenic. As mentioned on my user page, I'm not well-placed for referencing at present but hope to be able to access my books again soon; in the meantime, do please continue to chip in anything that is better than I can find online. Images of England

[edit]

The Images of England web site is to be decommissioned this month by Historic England. The text of the site entries has been available on the corresponding National Heritage List entry since that web site was created. The images are being transferred ahead of the decommissioning. As a result of this a BOT has changed all {{IoE}} templates to {{NHLE}} templates and translated the reference number according to a list provided by Historic England.

It would be good if members could check these, when they come across them, as I have spotted one with an incorrect translation. Some articles already had {{NHLE}} templates in them so the references may need to be combined. Other changes that may need to be performed are removal of template or text referring to the site as needing registration, changing the text "Images of England" or "IoE" to something more appropriate or may be even removing it if it is part of the description..

Hi - I don't want to come across as an aggressive or heavy-handed deletionist here (and since I see you are a fellow Wikiproject Yorkshire member, I don't want you to come over to York and biff me on the nose), but there's no easy way to say this: the creation of that article wasn't OK. You're autopatrolled, which means that the community trusts you to create articles that don't need to be reviewed by New Page Patrol. The article mentioned above has no supporting independent, secondary sources, just an entry on an exhaustive database of registered UK charities, and the charity's own website. That's not on for someone with your advanced permissions: please be more careful. Anything you create needs to be have enough independent, secondary and reliable sources to demonstrate notability. Hi. No offence taken. I made a start but was a bit disappointed I could not find more. I am no kind of expert on Wikipedia's rules, just someone who tries to help out. Chemical Engineer (talk) 22:57, 24 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Leeds Wikipedia meetup on Saturday 4th May

[edit]

Hello there! Interested in having a chat with fellow Wikipedians? There's a meetup in Leeds on Saturday 4th May 2024, at the Tiled Hall Café at Leeds Central Library.

Full details here.

You're receiving this one-off message as you're either a member of WikiProject Yorkshire, you've expressed an interest in a previous Leeds meetup years ago, or (for about 4 of you), we've met :)

I plan to organise more in future, so if you'd like to be notified next time, please say so over on the meetup page.

Please also invite any Wikimedia people you know (or have had wiki dealings with) – spread the word! Hope to see you there.
