Ivory-billed Woodpeckers
[edit]In the short term, I'm content to try to work on the rest of the article (since the whole thing is a dumpster fire). It's possible with the rest of the article in place, the post '44 stuff won't seem to egregiously unbalanced (post '44 searches are the subjects of at least two books & a lot of popular media and stuff, so it's certainly worth a non-trivial amount of space.)
But regardless, at some point (certainly before a GA attempt), some sort of resolution that allows for the material in question to be re-written to be well suited to Wikipedia will need to take place. I'm at a bit of a loss on how/if that's possible (seriously, as far as I can determine, all the complaints I don't know the subject, make illogical changes, have a hidden agenda, etc. seem to stem from me writing "flap speed" rather than "flap rate", which, okay, was a bit sloppy, but is easily fixed and I've already stated multiple times I'm happy to do that), but at this point, it seems impossible to even try to discuss any content, or any way to find a resolution that can work for everyone. Since you're the only person who seems to be paying attention that hasn't earned any ire, I figured I'd reach out to you to see if you had a less involved view of how to move forward. WilyD 16:28, 28 October 2019 (UTC)
- For the next five days my free time is minimal and highly unpredictable (am busier than I expected!), which is annoying as I need to digest info and figure how to proceed. I can see both sides and will see how best to move forward soon. Until then recommend doing as you suggest and we can look at that next week. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 21:57, 28 October 2019 (UTC)
- No worries, I don't think there's a hurry. Most of the egregious parts are now redone - a lot of it's now a disorganised information dump, but progress on that is going to be slower. There's a thorny issue where most sources just regurgitate Tanner's book, which is by far the best study - but it's unclear how much that study of six birds is really representative of the whole species - Cinclodes alludes to it, and it's true, and it's hard to figure out how to work around in a Wikipedia context. So I think progress on pretty much everything is going to be slow going anyhow. WilyD 08:39, 29 October 2019 (UTC)

Future FAC
[edit]Do you intend to do an African bird for FAC? If so, I'd help out. LittleJerry (talk) 00:44, 12 November 2019 (UTC)

Okay @LittleJerry:, let's do secretarybird as it is pretty unique. Maybe @Aa77zz: will help as well. My free time will be patchy in coming weeks so between the three of us chipping in we might make a go of it. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 22:36, 19 November 2019 (UTC)

- I had a look at the article in The Birds of Africa - this is the equivalent of HANZAB or BWP for African birds. I was a bit disappointed - only three and a half pages and hardly any references - but still useful. - Aa77zz (talk) 15:00, 22 November 2019 (UTC)
- In some ways that makes it easier - HANZAB starts off with pretty slim entries for many raptors and seabirds and gets more detailed as it finishes off with the passerines. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 19:38, 22 November 2019 (UTC)
- Would you like to start once green mamba passes? I will probably nominate wolf in January. I'm a little nervous about that one, since its the first article since 2013 that I'm nominating without a partner. LittleJerry (talk) 21:58, 20 December 2019 (UTC)
- I have been really busy. I'd still like to do secretarybird, just been snowed under. I will digest the stuff I have and go from there. I think I have some free time later. It will be 40+C, humid where I am so I don't want to go out much. Sydney also filled with bushfire smoke, which makes outide unpleasant ATM Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 22:00, 20 December 2019 (UTC)

Etymologies in plant articles
[edit]Please see User talk:TelosCricket#Proposed RfC where two of your featured articles are being critiqued for 'incorrect etymologies'. (Telopea oreades and Banksia sphaerocarpa). Unsure if your interest extends to this type of detail. I became aware because of a WP:AN3 report where people were disputing whether the etymologies in our plant articles were correct, and if they ought to be checked against Latin and Greek dictionaries. Or on the other hand, if such checking would count as original research. More background is at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Tree of Life/Archive 46#Problematic editing on etymologies. welcome (back) to the Arbitration Committee
[edit]Congratulations on your success in the elections and welcome to the 2020 Arbitration Committee. This is the first part of your induction onto the Arbitration Committee.
Please use the EmailUser function to indicate:
- the email address you'd like to use for ArbCom and functionary business, and
- if you wish to assigned checkuser and/or oversight for your term.
Before you can be subscribed to any mailing lists or assigned checkuser or oversight permissions you must sign the Wikimedia Foundation's confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information. Please confirm that your username is listed on the Access to nonpublic personal data policy/Noticeboard. If it isn't, and you haven't signed the agreement, please do this promptly and let me know when you have signed it. If you have signed the agreement, but your username is not listed on the noticeboard, please let me know.
Over the coming days, you will receive a small number of emails as part of the induction process. Please carefully read them. If they are registration emails, please follow any instructions in them to finalise registration. You can contact me or any other arbitrator directly if you have difficulty with the induction process.
Thank you for volunteering to serve on the committee. We very much look forward to introducing ourselves to you on the mailing list and to working with you this term.
For the Arbitration Committee,
I came by to say congratulations, but then saw Katie using the exclusively inclusive but excruciating “Royal we” and thought better of it. Do they not teach grammar in foreign parts? Whatever, I’m glad one of candidates I voted for won through. There is hope. Giano (talk) 21:27, 15 December 2019 (UTC)

- I sympathise. Me real hate is people referring to themselves as “myself” when they mean me or I, or worse still “I, myself” as if one had another self. Then there’s “basically.” I think I’ll stop there. Congratulations anyway, I’m sure it will be an enlightening experience. Giano (talk) 21:47, 18 December 2019 (UTC)

Golden swallow scheduled for TFA
[edit]This is to let you know that the golden swallow article has been scheduled as today's featured article for January 30, 2020. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/January 30, 2020, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1000 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so.
For Featured Articles promoted on or after October 1, 2018, there will be an existing blurb linked from the FAC talk page, which is likely to be transferred to the TFA page by a coordinator at some point.
We suggest that you watchlist Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors from the day before this appears on Main Page. Thanks! Jimfbleak - talk to me? 09:52, 16 December 2019 (UTC)

2020 Arbitration Committee
[edit]The Arbitration Committee welcomes the following new and returning arbitrators following their election by the community. The two-year terms of these arbitrators formally begin on 01 January 2020:
- Beeblebrox (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log)
- Casliber (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log)
- David Fuchs (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log)

The one-year terms of these arbitrators also begin on 1 January 2020:

- DGG (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log)
- Maxim (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log)
All incoming arbitrators have elected to receive (or retain, where applicable) the checkuser and oversight permissions. Xeno has elected not to receive administrator permissions.
We also thank our outgoing colleagues whose terms end on 31 December 2019:
- Opabinia regalis (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) will retain Oversight
- Premeditated Chaos (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) will retain Oversight
Outgoing arbitrators are eligible to retain the CheckUser and Oversight permissions, remain active on cases accepted before their term ended, and to remain subscribed to the functionaries' and arbitration clerks' mailing lists following their term on the committee. To that effect:
- Stewards are requested to remove the permission(s) noted from the following outgoing arbitrators after 31 December 2019 at their own request:
- CheckUser: Opabinia regalis, Premeditated Chaos
- Outgoing arbitrators are eligible to remain active on cases opened before their term ended if they wish. Whether or not outgoing arbitrators will remain active on any ongoing case(s) will be noted on the proposed decision talk page of affected case(s).
- Both outgoing arbitrators will remain subscribed to the functionaries' mailing list
- Both outgoing arbitrators will be unsubscribed from the arbitration clerks' mailing list at their request.

Spread the holiday cheer by adding {{subst:User:Flaming/MC2008}} to their talk page with a friendly message.
I'm wishing you a Merry Christmas, because that is what I celebrate. If you don't like Christmas or just don't celebrate it in any of its forms, then please accept a generic "Happy Holidays". You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Atriplex hollowayi), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. [edit]Thanks for your engagement in WikiProject Medicine. The present tension is unfortunate and I wish that we could negotiate some norms for friendly and stress-free discussion. My wish is that a bit of occasional tension brings some progress then a cool-down period. With you being an experienced Wikipedia editor you negotiated a forum for discussion, and I appreciate your doing that.
I care less about the outcomes of these things and more about friendly process which people enjoy. Thanks for participating and I hope you visit without hesitation when you feel the desire to do so. Blue Rasberry (talk) 15:32, 7 January 2020 (UTC) |
Page bloat
[edit]Cas, we have an important RFC ready for launch, after a month in development, with the MEDLEAD RFC also running now, and a talk page at MEDMOS that was 800KB yesterday. We really don't need another RFC right now, especially one that was not discussed in advance. Perhaps WhatamIdoing, who is an expert on RFCs (as everything else she is an expert on) will give you suggestions on the best way to proceed now. We've got to stop this !voting without discussing trend that plagues WPMED, where a conflict happens, a post to WT:MED is made, and everyone comes rushing in with factionalized !voting. We need to change the culture. Best, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 20:46, 7 January 2020 (UTC)
- Okay, given it's malformed then shall we just close it? You do realise Doc James has already given his opinion don't you, so leaving it open for that is pointless. The reason I wanted some yes/no points was to avoid a wall of text that discourages input and close analysis at closure. If you and @WhatamIdoing: think the structure dooms it then we can just close it for the time being. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 01:25, 8 January 2020 (UTC)
- Wikipedia:Requests for comment#Ending RfCs lists official options, one of which is that Cas can withdraw it at (more or less) any time.
- I think I've solved the structural problems. If other people will actually answer the question you asked, it could be over rather painlessly in a week or two. Weeks or months from now, I'd be happy to see us all talk through the question of how prescriptive the order is meant to be. WhatamIdoing (talk) 01:35, 8 January 2020 (UTC)
- Cas, now that WAID has gotten it under control, it might serve another useful purpose (even if WPMED has to wait a few months to get the real discussion about "how prescriptive the order is meant to be"). Your RFC could turn out to be a good teachable moment, with WAID involved and demonstrating an alternate path to the typical "I agree with editor-so-and-so" as a means of building consensus. I hope that consensus on article talk will allow you to install a logical narrative, but in my experience, consensus-building is something that WPMED needs to re-learn. Since I am likely to decide, again, that this is not the place I want to be, you know where to find me. It will be a more pleasant place than here ;) All the best, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 01:45, 8 January 2020 (UTC)
- Yes...it is....enthusiasm-dampening that's for sure. Though to be fair, moving two sections wholesale back and forth is not a big deal as the rest of the article can be worked on in the meantime. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 01:55, 8 January 2020 (UTC)
- Maybe not a big deal when you only deal with it once ... not worth it when it is your entire editing day, and pretty soon there's no place left to contribute. Well, I have tried to re-invigorate FAC and FAR, so I hope my time back in here left something useful. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 02:16, 8 January 2020 (UTC)
- You're stuck on ArbCom again. I thought that ArbCom members weren't allowed to have any enthusiasm anyway.

Of course, Prep 3 is that last filled prep, so we're badly lagging in that department as well. We may need to go back to one a day not because we've made significant progress (15 to 20 nomination days are crazy!), but because we don't have enough people building prep sets. - Dr. Blofeld, I just saw your note here, re the great event above!!!! could you please let me know more? I'm intrigued by your idea. this is precisely of great editor group event I had ion mind, when I proposed a new collaborative workspace for joint project history, to be named "Town Hall," or some other similar name. could you please let me know a little more about the effort that you mention above? for one thing, have there been other efforts like this in the past? If so, could you please give me a link where I could view the past pages for any such group effort?

- I thought you meant at template:cent (which I did), but then this happened. I have no idea where the global edit notices are made. Looked here but got confused. And am short of time. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 19:38, 21 February 2020 (UTC)
I responded on Discord but you haven't been on, so I'm leaving this on your talk page. Take it with as many grains of salt as desired. ~
The comparisons in the lead to BG are off-putting. So is the clarification about the name of the system. Generally, the lead doesn't seem to do a good job summarizing.
The multiple paragraphs about the nomenclature at the beginning seem to me to be of low import to the generalist reader (me :). A table might be preferable, and/or movement to the latter etymology section.
General vocabulary seems appropriate for the class of article but I do see that it would be hard to parse for non-specialists. Links are provided where appropriate. (This is standard jargon problem on Wikipedia.) Conversely, the bit about the H alpha line gets into a sentence or two not pertinent to the article. (The history.)
Which companion star? Though, I'm not sure that sentence is exactly necessary in general, especially since it's like "well, there's another thing but we're not really sure about that other thing" which doesn't really help the reader...

note re your comments
[edit]Hi there Casliber. it is really great to read your user page, and to hear about all your great efforts here at Wikipedia! I am writing to ask about your interesting comments at the Village Pump discussion on a new proposed workspace. Firstly, I am glad that you support the idea to add a new tab to Village Pump, for topics relating to "Projects."
However, I just wanted to get some details on your other suggestion, i.e. to merge the proposed page for "Town Hall" with the page for Community Portal. I don't really agree with this idea for one simple reason; even though I initiated the idea for the page "Town Hall," I don't think it has really caught on as of yet. so I don't think that merging it with another page would accomplish anything, since it doesn't currently have much of a following at all anyway. I wanted to write to you, just to ask if perhaps you could give me some more details on your idea, or why you think the page should be merged??
By the way, I have moved the bulk of the page to a draft in my own user space; since we don't have a consensus yet for the direction of this page, it seems better to keep it mostly as a draft for now. Anyway, if you could please reply when you get a chance, and let me know a little more about your thoughts on this, I would greatly appreciate it. By the way, please ping me when you reply. thanks. cheers!!! --Sm8900 (talk) 16:16, 11 February 2020 (UTC)

Throwback Arbcom
[edit]I noticed you brought back a remedy from years gone by. The "Probation". I was glad to see that. It's not just that I like Kudpung (although I do) - but rather I like to see more than just the "black and white" of desysop or not solutions to complex problems. Another one I remember from back in the day was the "Temporary Desysop" (usually 6, or 12 months if memory serves.) Not really any questions here with my post - just noting that I appreciated seeing some more ... expansive thinking on Arbcom, and I wanted to say Thank you for that. — Ched (talk) 23:06, 22 February 2020 (UTC)

New events to be listed
[edit]Hi. As per our discussion above, I would like to add the following items to the list of items at the Wikipedia:Community bulletin board. Is it okay with you if I do so? I just wanted to keep you posted on my efforts. I appreciate if you could please let me know if that's okay. Please ping me when you reply. I really appreciate your help. thanks.
DRAFT:
- Women in Green. On 10 February 2020 the project became a WikiProject in its own right after about four and half years as a task force. The project is dedicated to promoting articles on women to Good Article status. Currently only about 4% of GAs are about women, and very few core articles have reached GA status. New members and interest in this would be appreciated.
- Wikipedia:The Great Britain/Ireland Destubathon. The Great Britain/Ireland De-stub-athon is an edit-a-thon contest that aims to vastly decrease the number of stubs we have for the UK and Ireland. This focuses particularly on places and listed buildings, but the contest will include everything. It aims to eliminate as many of our 44,000-odd stubs as possible, and to see content improved for every single county of the UK and Ireland as evenly as possible. It covers all 48 counties of England (as well as the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man), 32 in Scotland, 32 in Ireland and N Ireland, and 22 of Wales, 134 counties in total. Wouldn't it be great to be able to browse a Google map of the UK and Ireland and to read a consistently good quality article for every village and monument you zoom in on? That's the primary goal we have in mind long term here!
- Wikipedia:WikiProject_Military_history/March_Madness_2020. March Madness is a backlog reduction drive, which will run from 00:01 UTC on 1 March through to 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2020. The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project; however, only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. This year the drive is focused on the following areas:
- tagging article and non-article talk pages that fall within the project's scope, including adding articles to MILHIST task force
- assessing articles that fall within the project's scope, including Good Article nominations
- updating the open tasks template on Milhist task force pages (e.g. Template:WPMILHIST Announcements/Japanese military history)
- adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages (e.g. Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/African military history task force)
- creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Blitzes/February 2020. This Copy Editing Project Blitz is a one-week-long effort of the Guild of Copy Editors to reduce the backlog of articles that require copy editing; those carrying the {{copyedit}} tag or listed on the GOCE Requests page. It began on 16 February 2020, at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on 22 February 2020, at 23:59 (UTC).
- The theme(s) of this blitz is/are:
- Articles tagged for copy-edit in August 2019
- Requests
- Blitz participants can earn barnstar awards based on the number of articles—and the word counts of the articles—they copy edit. Awards will be given out once the blitz has finished.
- The blitz is open to all; you don't have to be a member of the Guild of Copy Editors to participate. You must, however, be competent in your use of English grammar, spelling and punctuation. We strongly advise you to read Wikipedia's guide to basic copy editing before you begin working. If you're unsure about spelling, grammar or punctuation, consult the Wikipedia Manual of Style. Skilled use of English is especially important for articles listed on the Requests page.
- Art+Activism: 2020 Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon
- Wikipedia:Meetup/ArtAndFeminism#Art+Activism:_2020_Art+Feminism_Wikipedia_Edit-a-thon
- Art+Feminism is pleased to announce the theme of its seventh annual Wikipedia Edit-a-thon is Art+Activism. Activism is something that is deeply rooted in the fiber of this organization. Art has long been a vehicle to reflect and urge social, political and cultural change. Just like the word “feminism” can have different meanings to the individual, “activism” can as well. We welcome all interpretations, wide and narrow, of Art+Activism to be part of our 2020 campaign. Visit our Tumblr to learn more about this year's theme.

- To Organize an Event
- Consult our Organizers Quick Guide. Currently available in English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese.
- Contact us by email at info@artandfeminism.org to learn more and to let us know that you are organizing an event.
- Create a program on the Program & Events Dashboard (instructions below).
- List your editathon by submitting your event details via this form.
- Learn how to edit clicking the Resources tab on this Meet up page.
- How We Organize
- From the beginning Art+Feminism has paid careful attention to how and where we organize our events, prioritizing off-wiki channels of communication. We use the Programs & Events Dashboard instead of meetup pages, and we are collecting the list of events on our website, rather than here. We do this because our UX/UI review found that, because we had so many events and the wiki interface is confusing to new users, this main meet up page was difficult to parse and folks were missing events in their towns.

- All seem like a good idea to me Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 19:56, 25 February 2020 (UTC)
- ok, that's terrific. thanks! here is another idea; would it be good if I set up a whole new section for that page, to be entitled "group activities and efforts"?
- All seem like a good idea to me Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 19:56, 25 February 2020 (UTC)
- If you do agree with that, then I would propose that on the talk page for that page, and would include the full draft text above. after sufficient time has gone by, and if we get consensus, then we could add it to that page. does that sound okay? Feel free to let me know any comments, or any alternate approach or steps that you might prefer. thanks. --Sm8900 (talk) 21:50, 25 February 2020 (UTC)
j'accuse
[edit]I find the complaints lodged against Kudpung to be so weak that they're laughable. I also find your assessment of Kudpung's behavior unreasonable and your decision to remove his mop unmerited. While I have great respect for our admins that remain polite and unflappable in every circumstance, I think that attitude is neither required nor reasonable for all admins. While you may think that you protected this project by punishing Kudpung or preventing personal attacks, your actions today have only played into the hands of a certain clique of editors who took advantage of this opportunity to remove an obstacle to their plans. I can only assume that you've joined the "hasten the day" crowd. (I am not watching this page, so please ping me if you want my attention.) Chris Troutman (talk) 01:07, 1 March 2020 (UTC)
- @Chris troutman: I found it a hard call as can be evidenced by my changing my vote. I am sure if the decision had ended the other way we'd have people complaining about that too. WikiCup 2020 March newsletter
[edit]And so ends the first round of the competition. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2, with 57 contestants qualifying. We have abolished the groups this year, so to qualify for Round 3 you will need to finish Round 2 among the top thirty-two contestants.
Our top scorers in Round 1 were:
- Epicgenius, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with a featured article, five good articles and an assortment of other submissions, specialising on buildings and locations in New York, for a total of 895 points.
- Gog the Mild came next with 464 points, from a featured article, two good articles and a number of reviews, the main theme being naval warfare.
- Raymie was in third place with 419 points, garnered from one good article and an impressive 34 DYKs on radio and TV stations in the United States.
- Harrias came next at 414, with a featured article and three good articles, an English civil war battle specialist.
- CaptainEek was in fifth place with 405 points, mostly garnered from bringing Cactus wren to featured article status.
- The top ten contestants at the end of Round 1 all scored over 200 points; they also included L293D, Kingsif, Enwebb, Lee Vilenski and CAPTAIN MEDUSA. Seven of the top ten contestants in Round 1 are new to the WikiCup.
These contestants, like all the others, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. In Round 1 there were four featured articles, one featured list and two featured pictures, as well as around two hundred DYKs and twenty-seven ITNs. Between them, contestants completed 127 good article reviews, nearly a hundred more than the 43 good articles they claimed for, thus making a substantial dent in the review backlog. Contestants also claimed for 40 featured article / featured list reviews, and most even remembered to mention their WikiCup participation in their reviews (a requirement).
Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.
If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! [edit]There was an error in the WikiCup 2020 March newsletter; L293D should not have been included in the list of top ten scorers in Round 1 (they led the list last year), instead, Dunkleosteus77 should have been included, having garnered 334 points from five good articles on animals, living or extinct, and various reviews. Draft of advice for a particular noticeboard
[edit]Comments invited before I put it up:
A couple of things I found recently. I'm sure everyone here is familiar with them, and found them equally positive and inspiring:
I've been keeping them in my mind, and thinking that it really is something incredibly positive that we are doing here, and yes, there are a few rough patches we can work on.
We rely on admins to mop up the spills and it can be a pretty bloody thankless task, so let me say thank you for your efforts. God knows that I prefer being able to run away and do something else when things get too hot, but you folk have to put on your admin boots and wade in. Thanks.
Speaking of hot, I'm sure everybody has been aware of the bushfires in Australia. There's a regular article we put out, for example 2016–17 Australian bushfire season, because of course we have most of our bushfires in the Southern Hemisphere summer which spans two years. We've been doing this for years, and it's usually a pretty uncontroversial thing.
Not this year. There have been all sorts of political aspects, and supporters of various political positions have been having a go at our article, not wanting to talk about the fires so much as make sure that they get their particular views into Wikipedia and that makes it official.
Sigh.
It's turned into a bit of a hotbed, and it's just massive compared to previous years: 2019–20 Australian bushfire season
I've tried to stay out of all that, but I got pulled in when I saw some edit-warring over something really stupid. (Story of my life, I guess.) The end date of the bushfire season. In previous years, we've gone along with the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, and they have a graphic showing the season in various regions, and it starts in winter (June-August) in the northern parts where the summers are really wet, and ends in spring (March-May) in Tasmania. So the Australian bushfire season really goes all year round from June of one year to May of the next.
I didn't know this at first, and the question in this year's article was that if all the summer bushfires were out, then perhaps the season was over? One guy said March was the end of the season because all of the bushfires were out, and another said the end of the season was ongoing because there might be more. This sounded like he had a handy view into the future to me, and I got sucked in over the philosophical implications.
Anyways, it got pretty heated there, with edit-warring and some trolling and a personal attack or two.
I was proposing an RfC on the season end date, going by the advice of Cas Liber who had waded into the flames and told us to stop throwing rocks at each other. I didn't see that this particular comment was anything but personal, so I looked up WP:RPA, removed it and left the suggested template.
The other guy complained to Admin Cas, who presumably sighed, grabbed his fire extinguisher, and jumped in once more. No criticism of Cas Liber, but I'd put in a comment about my philosophy on Wikipedia:
- God forbid that any article should be seen as the personal preserve of a clique who launch personal attacks and edit-war over trivia. Let us set aside ego and attachment, and calmly accept that wikiprocedure will guide us through any difficulty.
and Cas removed it, saying that if I could remove someone else's personal attack, then he could remove my comments, which were not actually directed at anybody in particular, and are sentiments I hold pretty close to my heart and consider could usefully be employed by more people, not just in Wikipedia, but in wider life.
- I think that civility piece, that minimum standard, is incredibly important, what I want us to do is to raise the level in the entire community, to raise the spirit of what we're doing, and I think that thinking about love, is the right way to do that. - Jimbo
Again, not a breath of criticism toward Cas, but where does the community of admins stand on the matter of humble editors pushing the line of civility and tolerance so eloquently expressed by Jimbo?
Is it really the place of admins to remove comments which while not strictly dealing with the business of the article, are aimed at promoting cooperation and a positive working environment? --Pete (talk) 23:44, 6 March 2020 (UTC)
- Yes - see Wikipedia:Do not disrupt Wikipedia to illustrate a point and Wikipedia:Gaming_the_system#Gaming_the_consensus-building_process. Making a page a wall of text inhibits productive discussion. Feel free at attract other opinions at WP:AN/I if you really want to defend the comments that I have removed. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 23:51, 6 March 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks. I've put it up. I don't take your actions personal, as I stick by the philosophy quote I hold close to my heart. --Pete (talk) 00:00, 7 March 2020 (UTC)

Since one of the main protagonists at that article now seems to be otherwise engaged, and discussion on the Talk page has died right down (apart from some good suggestions for improvements), do you think it's time to unprotect it so that sensible editing might continue? Perhaps with some sort of caveat that any change in the area that caused all the heat (the end date of the fire season) be discouraged. HiLo48 (talk) 05:26, 8 March 2020 (UTC)

May I beg your indulgence?
[edit]I try to speak with a gentle voice, and to steer discussion toward wikiwork, not personalities, but it seems that one editor on the bushfires page prefers otherwise. I'd remove his latest as an obvious personal attack, but based on previous form, he'd revert and claim the mandate of heaven for his abuse, and it would all turn into more disruption.
I'll ignore him unless he actually makes some response which is on-topic, but I shouldn't have to cop such abuse. Nor should any editor.
If not yourself, do you have some thoughtful friend who might guide editors to wisdom? --Pete (talk) 01:03, 11 March 2020 (UTC)
- It will take time for the heat to die down at that talk page. I recommend leaving it for two months, by which time it will be May. Wikipedia is a big place. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 06:59, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

- No. But neither does it invalidate their arguments. Fact is, your position did change and it seemed that in the end, if you want it to say 'May' then waiting till May when sources say it has ended in May would be prudent. So just leave it till then. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 11:37, 11 March 2020 (UTC)
- Pish. My position is unimportant. We editors are not sources. I changed my stance when I found what we'd done in previous years. We're never going to get an official source saying this season ended in May. The only sources I can find indicate February or March.[4][5][6] Try it for yourself: Google "2020 bushfire season end". --Pete (talk) 20:38, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

Virus TFA
[edit]Cas and Graham Beards, I am very confused by the feedback here, and suggest that if we must overcome bureaucracy to run a relevant and topical TFA, I don't know what the process is about any more. I am not going to jump through hoops to advance someone else's helpful idea ... and helpful it was, considering we had the chance to showcase something worthy and topical on the mainpage. The coronavirus content all over ITN is pretty disappointing. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 23:36, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
- SandyGeorgia, I have not taken part in the discussions because there is a possible COI. I think it is being suggested that the Introduction article should be "updated" to include the emergent viruses such as SARS and SAR-2 (the current pandemic strain) and then approval of the new content to be obtained from the med project. The former I am happy to do (although I always regarded the Introduction article to be an overview) the latter I am not. To be frank, from what I have seen with the plethora of COVID articles, where our treasured WP:MEDRS seems to have all but abandoned, the project no longer has my trust (and hasn't for sometime). Graham Beards (talk) 02:00, 19 March 2020 (UTC)
- I hear you. The COVID articles are a wreck across the board, and it is appalling that this odd and hard-to-understand logic is being applied to a virus FA which would be a perfect complement to the mainpage. I guess ... it was a good and sensible TFA idea but I wash my hands of this little ... whatever it is. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 02:10, 19 March 2020 (UTC)
Hang on, what approval of what content do you mean @Graham Beards:? I am missing something...? Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 02:52, 19 March 2020 (UTC)
- Apparently there are some “leading lights” of Wp:Med and “they” are to be consulted. Curiously, none of the Wp:med fa writers know who these luminescent ones might be or how we seek their approval without canvassing. This whole thing is very odd, and considering it was someone else’s idea, I have no further interest in advancing it. There was already a thread at wt:med. I guess wehwalt just doesn’t want to do a bit extra to add value to the FA process. Oddest set of TFA requirements I have ever seen. Yet Ealdgyth was all set to go with it ... SandyGeorgia (Talk) 03:13, 19 March 2020 (UTC)
- Meh, going over the article as I suggested is straightforward enough and would be good regardless of it being mainpaged or otherwise. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 04:24, 19 March 2020 (UTC)
- I have been asleep, it's early morning in the UK. Sandy's synopsis is accurate. I have responded at Talk:Introduction to viruses. I must stress that this was not my or Sandy's idea and up to now I have not partaken in any discussions. Perhaps my skin is too thin, but there have been hurtful innuendos regarding my competence which are demoralising. I brought a vital article to FA, served as FAC coordinator for years but still have to get my worked checked by "leading lights" at a dysfunctional project. I have had my fair share of exposure on the Main Page. There is nothing in this for me apart more concern about inaccurate edits on top of all the problems I am having to deal with at the plethora of coronavirus articles where some helpful input from leading lights would not go amiss. Graham Beards (talk) 07:58, 19 March 2020 (UTC)
- Graham Beards where might I help that I won't end up blocked? I created White House Coronavirus Task Force, which led me to look into 2020 coronavirus pandemic in the United States, which is so horrid I had to unwatch before I blew a circuit. (I did make a few changes first, and suggested on talk page that the article is dreadfully POV and not useful to our readers.) If there is a place I can help without getting into trouble, please point me to it, but all of these articles are in gross violation of not just MEDRS, but everything else (UNDUE, POV, NOTNEWS, the works). They shouldn't be on the mainpage. But I will help you if you can point me to an article that is medical and not political. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 15:17, 19 March 2020 (UTC)
- So, I see the problem mentioned by Graham Beards. Seeing his post, I dug in to try and help, but with stuff like this, I am pretty sure it is better to unwatch. This is futile, apparently, and WPMED is NOT doing anything about it, and who needs the headache. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 22:20, 20 March 2020 (UTC)

Any chance of a DYK prep to queue promotion?
[edit]Cas Liber, at the moment Prep 3 is ready for promotion. If you have time, do you think you could promote it to Queue 3, assuming another admin doesn't get there first?
Right now, we need to open up one more prep so we can move the lead hook (and any others) out of Prep 1 so it can be used for assembling the April Fools' Day list, so it would be very helpful to have that done. At the moment, the planned lead hook for Prep 4 is a subject of intense discussion, as there is a disagreement about what the best approach is, so it may be another day or so before it's ready for promotion.
Many thanks for whatever you can do. BlueMoonset (talk) 02:51, 26 March 2020 (UTC)

- Another day, another set of empty queues. Might you be able to promote Prep 6 to Queue 6? I'd leave Prep 1 there a little while longer, since there's a plan to move the lead hook to a different position in the set so the image doesn't give away the joke. Many thanks. Banksia ashbyi
[edit]Hi Cas, and other lurkers :D My Banksia ashbyi plant is being particular helpful and productive this year it has given a nice little show of the various stages of the flower growth all at once you can view the photos on commons. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Banksia_ashbyi_flowering_stages I'll keep adding to this as the progress over the next few months. This plant was from Lulfitz a few years a go it wasnt identified as a subspecies or cultivar. Gnangarra 06:55, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
- If it is short and stubby it is most likely the northern subspecies boreoscaia. George thought that one was cool. The progression is really cool. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 07:45, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
