No need, BoonDock, it won't be deleted unless it's unused in any article for more than seven days. Most of the articles that I uploaded such images for lately required a virtual rewrite, and Stefan2 has a hair-trigger and tags the images long before I'm done with editing the relevant article to add the picture. His present record is 30 minutes after upload, while I prefer the "several previews and one edit" way over the "multiple edit" way wherever possible. ^_^ So, unless one of the 7 stents in my heart fails or I run out of coffee before next Tuesday, it probably won't be a problem. -- André Kritzinger (talk) 22:18, 27 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ja, right, I saw. And the first one out of the blocks tells us the 9/11 article's lead needs to be rewritten to suit (I bet that will happen in a hurry...) and should not serve as example. May as well invite Patsy de Lille to comment as well, given her roots.

The issue is pretty clear to me as well. At the time, in 1993, I was sitting in boardrooms for a large part of the year and getting to know representatives from six of the eventual seven constituent military forces, to discuss the way forward to create the SANDF. The spirit was, for the most part, one of cautious goodwill, and in the middle of all this, these terrorists decided to go ape on soft targets.

See the wild (actually slanderous) statement by Thuvack on Talk:1993 in South Africa on 28 January: "...the army could easily fit the definition of a terrorist organization if the bench mark to be used is killing women and children in a place of worship. His colour is irrelevant. His ability is not, however. Same with Obama and Thatcher. And Mandela. Mentioning their colour or gender as "events" is actually racist/sexist and should be considered an insult to them, since it makes one wonder whether they were elected because they were able, or because they were coloured/female. And since all the sources you quote are media, here's my opinion, for what its worth:

One of South Africa's (and the world's) biggest problems is the media who stirs the racism pot at every opportunity. So what if Maimane is black?

When I look at Maimane, I don't see black. I see a young man that has, so far, impressed me.

• There are no more instances of ISBN 9771682584003 left on Wikipedia; I fixed the last one this week when it showed up on a Checkwiki error listing.

• Given your previous description of the location of "9771682584003" in the hardcopy--"below the barcode at left"--it's probably an EAN, not an ISBN.

I tried "9771682584003" in {{EAN}} and {{UPC}}. The EAN / UPC databases both say that "9771682584003" is valid, but neither database has an entry for it.

• On Wikipedia, there are 160 instances of OCLC 72827981.

• Only the six citations that I fixed contain the sentence "In the document, the printed identification number is 9771682584003."

• The Bad News: OCLC 72827981 is probably not the best page at WorldCat for Republic of South Africa Government Gazette. Much better is OCLC 31578734 because its page specifies an ISSN and it lists many more libraries where the gazette can be found.

They are "your" 160 articles, so you can decide how to handle the situation. Here are a variety of possibilities:

• Replace every instance of OCLC 72827981 with OCLC 31578734

1. Goes to a specific page on WorldCat
2. Will require a bot run

• Replace every instance of OCLC 72827981 with ISSN 0250-4391

Re: this revert, first of all, I know almost nothing about trains, and maybe 'front of loc, to the left' is a standard way to refer to wheel layout diagrams. However, in ordinary English 'to the left' is fairly meaningless (except 'could you move to the left', or 'his house is to the left of mine', both of which still beg the question 'whose left?'). Being able to see the wheels means one is looking from left or right, and not looking at the front at all. I think we both understand that this is a diagramatic representation of wheels as they would be seen by someone looking FROM a position directly left of the locomotive. • Every one of the last 10 articles you edited uses "Cape gauge" to refer to 1,067 mm.
• Articles on South African railways use "Cape gauge" to refer to 1,067 mm and "standard gauge" or "international standard gauge" to refer to Gautrain.

South African sources now agree on "Cape gauge" for 1,067 mm and "standard gauge" for 1,435 mm. Here are some of the top results on Google:

Cape gauge is the accepted term for 3'6" gauge in South Africa (and some other countries), and has been since about the 1880s-1900s. The 4'8½" gauge existed here for about 15 years on an approximately 60 mi (97 km) stretch in the Cape, and 17 years (with two locomotives at its peak) on a 5 mi (8.0 km) stretch in Durban. These were replaced by Cape gauge from 1872 and 1877 respectively. By 1936, Cape gauge consisted of 13,600 mi (21,900 km) route distance in South Africa, Namibia and Swaziland, not even counting the additional extensions into Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia, the Congo and Angola.

In 2009, the 80 km (50 mi) long 4'8½" gauge Gautrain route came into operation. With 80 km (50 mi) of 4'8½" gauge and 20,000 mi (32,000 km) of 3'6" Cape gauge, which would you consider as standard? I was not, however, suggesting that every page on South African Railways be edited to change "Cape gauge" to "standard gauge". Cape gauge is correct.

Both terms (standard and broad) have been used for 4'8½" gauge in South African documentation and literature over the years, but the South African standard gauge is still referred to as Cape gauge - the term "standard" could obviously not be used here. A rather bizarre statement, since you appear to have edited Honoris Crux Diamond, and that's certainly not what it says there! It says it was discontinued in 1993, not that it is not considered to have existed. Very different things. In addition, the reason for my edit was that the wording of Walker's current article suggests to me that he won a decoration at the level of the Victoria Cross or Medal of Honor twice, whereas in fact he won a decoration at the level of the Distinguished Service Order or Distinguished Service Cross twice, which is again rather different (i.e. he may have won the highest decoration to be awarded, but it was essentially a second-level decoration and not a first-level, since the first-level was never actually awarded). -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:02, 11 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

See South African military decorations order of wear for the official order of precedence, as published in 2002. (OK, I wrote that, too.) No decoration or medal which was never awarded, is included in the list - there are seven. All of them were included in earlier versions of the official order of precedence list, but prior to 1994 it was still possible for all seven of them to be awarded. The HCD therefore remained official until the whole Honoris Crux family was discontinued in 1992 - after that, having never been awarded, it no longer officially exists and the HCG became SA's top honour in respect of the era concerned. Hi Andre. I see you have recently added an article on this topic, thanks. I hope you don't mind but I've made a few amendments. A question for you - where did you find out that the tractors (actualy built by Yorkshire PSW Co, not Beardmore) from the Singlewood line went to Wembley for the exhibition? I haven't seen any reference to this anywhere else and it seems unlikely as in 1924 they would be needed for the construction and subsequent operation of the Singlewood line - and NG6 No 98 did not appear on the line until some time after opening. Most of the trains on the Wembley line seem to have been worked by Beardmore-Sentinel steam tractors or Beardmore-Halley petrol ones, or a Burford half-track. I have seen no picture or report of the Yorkshires appearing there.

Incidentally did you know that there was a Dutton line in Natal, from the Leuchars Estate to the SAR at Sandymount, a distance of 5 miles? It seems that the Dennis tractor from Canada Junction worked there. (The Times, 31 May 1923)

The Yorkshires appear but I think only at home in SA, but there is plenty of footage at Wembley with several different tractors of other makes. OK, now I need some advice. The WP:C2D listing format

makes provision to list categories one by one, even though you said it can all be in one listing. Finding and listing them one by one will be just as tedious as manually finding and renaming them. Hi Redrose64, To use the outside diameter of a boiler in loco specifications is useless and you'll likely find it to be the exception, not the rule. To determine boiler capacity (volume, heating surface, etc), the inside diameter of the boiler, the outside diameter of the boiler tubes and flues and the inner distance between tube plates are needed, all those surfaces that would be covered by water or steam in a working order boiler. All boiler measurements in loco drawings are given this way. The only exceptions I've found so far were really old engines, usually because factory drawings of them could not be found and someone had to clamber about the engine with a measuring tape or guesstimate the diameter. In such cases I add "outside" after the diameter just to be clear about it. Outside diameter is of no use unless the thickness of the boiler skin is also brought into the equation, but draughtsmen and designers preferred the KISS principle. For that reason I would also argue against, for example, adapting the infobox to make provision for an outside boiler diameter. - André Kritzinger (talk) 23:18, 20 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I know how to calculate volume and heating surface, thank you: I have been studying the subject for over thirty years. My point is that texts on British locomotives rarely give an inside diameter - the only cases that I've ever seen have been in detailed engineering drawings, the kind that also specify plate thickness, the corner radius of flanges, size of rivets and their spacing. Other than such engineering drawings, where boiler dimensions are quoted (either in tabular form or on a diagram) it is always the outside diameter which is given, normally that of the largest ring, but there are exceptions. Tapered boilers - such as those used on the GWR from 1902 and the LMS from 1933 - often have a minimum and maximum diameter quoted, but again, other than on engineering drawings they are always outside diameters.

It is misleading to place a figure into a parameter that was not intended for it. The parameter was added by you at 22:29, 2 January 2016 during the first of a long series of edits (example) which made massive changes to the infobox. There was a discussion at the time concerning a large number of additional parameters, now archived to Template talk:Infobox locomotive/Archive 2#Additional fields required: Steam, mostly, but only two people - yourself and DePiep (talk · contribs) - commented there. Previous to your edits, it was possible to use the |boiler= parameter to hold these outside diameters; now, it is not. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 08:18, 21 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

That's not quite a true reflection of facts. It was possible to hold both inner and outer dimensions without any indication whether it was outside or inside diameter, which was not a particularly accurate portrayal of specifications. That was misleading! Way back when, in the SA loco articles, I began adding "outside" in those cases where the drawings specified as such, i.e. the exceptions where the inside diameter was not known.

Just to clarify: What precisely is the outside boiler diameter defined as anyway? Around the boiler's skin? Around the boiler cladding?

In the few UK loco articles I edited the past few days to fix parameter errors, I could find no indication in any of them that the measurement was the outside diameter, and I honestly never expected it to be outside by default, hence the need for you to re-edit them. If, in the sources used for these articles where boiler dimensions are quoted either in tabular form or on a diagram, it is always the outside diameter which is given, why was this fact never mentioned as such in any article's text?

I suggest you do what I used to do with exceptions until the infobox was expanded. The parameter calls for inside diameter and if only outside diameter is known, simply add the word "outside" after the measurement.

Meanwhile, I suggest you put Category:Articles with unknown parameter in infobox locomotive in your startup list. It's in mine to highlight erroneous use of infobox parameters, or use of non-existing parameters. The present locos in there are all GCR as well, so maybe I'd better leave them for your attention. Please note that in these nine remaining articles with infobox errors, nowhere in the text or table of any of them is any mention made of whether boiler dimensions were measured outside or inside. - André Kritzinger (talk) 11:49, 21 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi and I did use sources for wikipedia on some steam engines like you told me to do so, and they're is one from Issuu.com site I used SARI Volume 4 November 2015 magazine which in that case got some guidence but it's is an old one from 2015 but should work out just fine. I checked into the 6A 462 and it's at believe it or not The Big Hole Museum in Kimberley which I used as one of the scoures. and the Big Hole Museum scorce.
