Oh dear. No doubt you've straightened it out though. In any event, I've moved the reference to Guest at Dr. Kiernan's suggestion. Please let me know if you object.--Wehwalt (talk) 13:46, 7 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, after investigation no copyvio was found. I've put on the Princess's talk page that I'm fine with your move.

Adela Tindal

[edit]

I have just edited the page you created about Adela Maddison, largely to insert her date of birth and parentage. However, you might like to review the assertion that she was an Irish composer, as I haven't found any direct Irish connections. Adela was born in London, her mother in Guernsey, and I think her father in England. Kvaratschelia (talk) 09:41, 8 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. The Irishness was as per my referenced source, Grove. I must admit I was a little puzzled by it (other than her mother's name looking Irish) but we have to go with the sources and Groves is obviously one of the highest authorities, and in fact the entry was written by Fuller who was also the author behind two of the other main references I used! I just couldn't find any reliable (or other!) source that said otherwise. I'm curious to find out where you found your material. Could you put the references you used for your bits into the article please? I also see you linked to Frederick Maddison (footballer). I had seen that we had an article for a person of that name, but I didn't link to it as none of my sources made the connection - no musical sources were interested in football and also I couldn't find any football source that was interested in music! I think the connection between these two, if true, is pretty interesting and should really be expanded on. By the same token though that link itself needs an explicit reference to support it - can you oblige? -- Aegoceras (talk) 12:44, 8 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I've added references for the birth and marriage announcements in The Times, and these can be backed up by various genealogical sites and my own correspondence with their direct descendants. Also, I have corrected the spelling of her first name to Katharine, rather than Katherine. As you say, there is quite a story to be told!Kvaratschelia (talk) 19:52, 8 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Looking good, I've now just reworded it slightly and put in some wikilinks. There's just one bit that I've tagged as still needing a reference, namely for her mother: the spelling of her name (O'Donel instead of O'Donnell, which is what is in the DNB) and her death year (which is not in the DNB). It would be great if you could dig up a ref for that. Please note though that any ref has to satisfy WP:VERIFY - personal correspondence wouldn't, nor would many websites. It sounds like you have a treasure trove of information though! -- Aegoceras (talk) 11:32, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I've put in a citation for the mother, as the death announcement in The Times confirms the spelling; but it can also be confirmed at various other sources, such as the marriage in 1853. She died on 1 August 1917 in Hordle, Hampshire, and is buried in the church there. I only started this because I am writing about her husband, so will leave her alone from now!Kvaratschelia (talk) 13:17, 10 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent addition to the article. Is Fauré a subject of particular interest to you? There are not enough of us. Best wishes. Tim riley (talk) 18:19, 7 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks very much, I'm glad you think I found the right spot in the article to put it. Yes, specifically mélodies though I wouldn't claim to be a technical expert. I've been working on Adela Maddison who it seems produced some songs following his style. -- Aegoceras (talk) 10:23, 8 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Good heavens! She comes as news to me. Most interesting. I'll rummage about and see if I can find anything else on her for your consideration. Tim riley (talk) 20:35, 8 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That would be great if you could, I've pretty much used up my available sources. She's a very interesting character but not too much is known. Unfortunately too it seems no-one knows the whereabouts of her scores from her Paris period, very frustrating! -- Aegoceras (talk) 20:57, 8 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Very meagre gleanings, I'm afraid, but such as they are you can download them from my webspace here. I'll leave them there till you've downloaded them. Tim riley (talk) 16:27, 9 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Got it, thanks - very kind of you. I particularly enjoyed her Musical Herald remark about "fat sheep" - very reminiscent of the Lutyens dismissal of the English school as "cow pat music"! (ouch) -- Aegoceras (talk) 16:57, 9 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I've just tacked on a couple of press cuttings, if you care to download it again. (Lutyens's jibe has rather backfired, don't you think? Most music lovers seem to prefer the English pastoral lot to her stuff.) Tim riley (talk) 17:09, 9 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again, I can't disagree with you about Lutyens. Does your magic extend by any chance to uploading images? I know there is a photo of her in "The Sketch" of Nov 1910, at the time of the Leipzig opera. If you do have access, is it to a version that's free of copyright? I must admit my grasp of the WP copyright protocol is shaky so I've never uploaded anything myself -- Aegoceras (talk) 17:29, 9 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
A 1910 image in a magazine would be public domain in the US (which is all we need for Wikipedia) but alas I haven't got access to The Sketch. I have looked through the publications to which I have access, but so far in vain. I'll keep looking. Tim riley (talk) 18:27, 9 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have found an image, but it is not a good one. I have posted it to the article talk page for you to see if you want to use it or not. I shall not be the least bit put out if you decide against. Tim riley (talk) 11:00, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Adella Madison photo

[edit]

If you upload it on en.wiki, it only has to be public domain in the United States. All images before 1923 are public domain. Tag it {{PD-US}}. For uploading to the commons, you'd have to determine whether it's also public domain in England (assuming the photo came from England). Calliopejen1 (talk) 19:53, 27 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have this new article at peer review, if you have time and inclination to look in and comment. I have made reference to Adela in re the 7th nocturne. Tim riley (talk) 15:23, 12 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Towns, townships, etc

[edit]

While applying MOS changes to List of township-level divisions of Shanghai, I noticed some of your SH town creations. I must say, they are better than almost all of the town articles I (and many others) create. Although the project will still be far off from complete coverage, if you could write articles for the rest of the towns in SH, that would be an enormous boost. Help

[edit]

hi Aegoceras, I see that you are the creator of a number of great articles, all of which should be nominated for DYK, but that is up to you. I started a number of them which I think could need some expert attention. Would you mind improving and expanding on a number of articles? Englefield House, Normansfield Theatre, Normansfield Hospital, The Olde Bell, Hurley, Ingress Abbey, St Alban's Church, Teddington, and Holmbury St Mary. Only if you have time of course, but it would be great. Thank you. Gryffindor (talk) 23:30, 14 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate the work you are doing on the Oliver Hill article. Margaret (Titania) Hill was my godmother and I spent some summers at Daneway in my youth. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. If you fancy taking the rest of the year off, I occasionally remind myself in fear that there are no listed garden categories! What would they be called? Grade II* etc listed parks and gardens? Gareth E Kegg (talk) 20:44, 27 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Better keep very quiet about that topic, or we'll suddenly find ourselves presented with hundreds of script-generated lists of listed gardens to correct and wikify! Aegoceras (talk) 21:01, 27 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I've begun the categories! Take a peek at my contributions. Wales and Scotland just have their historic gardens lumped into a parent category w/out specific grades. Fortunately we can use the NHLE template to ref them in articles, Edwardes Square is an example listing I think. Gareth E. Kegg (talk) 14:23, 6 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good, I will start using them! Didn't you mean Northern Ireland and Scotland above though, not Wales and Scotland - I don't think Wales has a category for listed gardens yet? -- Aegoceras (talk) 15:03, 6 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Another Lutyens house?

[edit]

Hi Aegoceras, nice 'hear' from you from time to time. My 'last two Lutyens houses' were also used as filming locations; that is my reason for uploading the photo's to Commons. A little frivolous compared to your work on Wikipedia ;-) Nevertheless I would very much like to know if you can identify a certain house used in another Agatha Christie's Poirot episode. It reminds me of Munstead Wood, but it's different. My own searches have not revealed anything so far. I have some still's for you to see if you want to help. Will you? If so, how do I get the stills to you? They are copyrighted, aren't they, so I cannot just upload them. --Judithcomm (talk) 19:03, 16 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Judithcomm. I'm afraid I don't have much detailed knowledge about Lutyens houses beyond the articles I've written to date, so I don't think I'd be much help, sorry. I'd say that you are way ahead of me, based on what I've seen of your recent work on Commons! Of the houses I've done, only Orchards comes to mind - very like Munstead Wood, but bigger. -- Aegoceras (talk) 17:13, 17 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the tip. From the images I have been able to find so far, I cannot say for sure if this is the one, though. But maybe, some day.... --Judithcomm (talk) 08:39, 18 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The West Country Challenge

[edit]

I presume you have heard about The West Country Challenge?

The The West Country Challenge will take place from 8 to 28 August 2016. The idea is to create and improve articles about Bristol, Somerset, Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, Dorset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire.

The format will be based on Wales's successful Awaken the Dragon which saw over 1000 article improvements and creations and 65 GAs/FAs. As with the Dragon contest, the focus is more on improving core articles and breathing new life into those older stale articles and stubs which might otherwise not get edited in years. All contributions, including new articles, are welcome though.

Work on any of the items at:

or other articles relating to the area.

There will be sub contests focusing on particular areas:

To sign up or get more information visit the contest pages at Wikipedia:WikiProject England/The West Country Challenge.— Rod talk 17:22, 18 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for noticing that the image on Custom House, Poole couldn't have been taken in 1815. Turns out I misread the copyright, and the image is actually still in copyright, so I've requested its deletion at Commons. Joseph2302 19:33, 4 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Europe 10,000 Challenge invite

[edit]

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 02:00, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
