Villages of Kiribati

[edit]

Not in the least - on the contrary, I'm happy to see that someone with local experience is editing articles about Kiribati. Welcome aboard, and happy editing! --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 05:22, 12 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It is good to see somebody showing an interest locally. But Ser Amantio might be happy to see you redirect villages to islands but I'm not. Antai has a population of 199 people, seems to be an adequate settlement. Please try to expand the villages. If you are certain they are small hamlets and can't be expanded or something then perhaps redirect to the island but be sure to at least list the villages on the island page. It being a stub isn't purely a reason to redirect. If you want any assistance in expanding articles feel free to give me a bell. ♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 16:57, 12 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

My personal feeling is, as you wish. I've never been to Kiribati (I long to go someday), so I'd rather default to someone who knows the terrain there better than I. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 21:05, 12 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
OK then, that's a great map of Marakei BTW and you've given the pooulation data there so redirecting (if it can't be expanded) I guess is fine. But at least try to expand the larger villagers. I think the priority is to produce some decent articles on each of the islands and atolls and on general topics, always nice to have articles on obscure small villages though, but if they can't be expanded beyond population data then probably worth redirecting. Keep up the good work you've been doing!

BTW I made the flickr agreement for the images you see currently in the Kiribati article. We have so few images. If you could take photographs yourself or/and arrange with the government to release photographs of anywhere this would be very valuable and greatly help improve coverage on here. We badly need photos of the islands. ♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 11:32, 13 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, not really sure what to do about Pulaka. As for redirecting all villages to Tarawa, ones like Bikenibeu I think can be significantly expanded using sources like [1] [2]. ♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 13:22, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please see the expansion of Bikenibeu. It would be wrong to redirect all villages just because they're stubs. I doubt we could get every village up to such a status but I believe each atoll will probably have a few villages worthy of separate articles.♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 20:53, 19 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, stick with expanding the islands and atolls for now, leave assessing the settlements until a later date. I don't know if you are aware of WP:DYK but if you significantly expand an article, x5 in length, you can nominate it with an interesting fact and it will appear on the front page of wikipedia. Might be a fun way to share knowledge to the world about Kiribati. I and several of my collaborators would be interested in helping you expand any of the islands I suspect. Let me know what you are working on and we can help you expand and get the articles on the main page.♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 22:26, 19 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A Barnstar for You!

Kiribati National Award of Merit
Me, the sinister Ernst Stavro Blofeld sent a telegram to President Tong based on one of SPECTRE's principles of extortion. As a result he has decided to honor you with this through myself! Humour aside, you're doing a terrific job which the expansions, keep up the great work and may we see much more to come. Hope you enjoy working on here, your work is highly valuable. It's rare to find a native editor of such places and people such as yourself are highly important for addressing systematic bias. ♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 22:37, 19 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

New Challenge for Oceania and Australia

[edit]

Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Oceania/The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/The 5000 Challenge are up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. The Australia challenge would feed into the wider region one and potentially New Zealand could have a smaller challenge too. The main goal is content improvement, tackling stale old stubs and important content and improving sourcing/making more consistent but new articles are also welcome if sourced. I understand that this is a big goal for regular editors, especially being summertime where you are, but if you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Oceania and Australia like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1700 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for the region but fuelled by a series of contests to really get articles on every province and subject mass improved. The Africa contest scaled worldwide would naturally provide great benefits to Oceania countries, particularly Australia and attract new editors. I would like some support from existing editors here to get the Challenges off to a start with some articles to make doing a Destubathon worthwhile and potentially bring about hundreds of improvements in a few weeks through a contest! Cheers.♦ --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 02:12, 24 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
