A MovieBook is a physical book that incorporates written text along with QR codes that when scanned with a smartphone or tablet, direct the device responsible for scanning the QR code to a webpage hosting video footage that depicts specific sections (scenes) of that book. Each QR code within a MovieBook contains a URL that hosts a visual adaptation (video clip) of a segment of words within the same book.
To differentiate a MovieBook from any other ordinary book, magazine, comic, or other written literature containing one or more QR codes, every video clip linked to each individual QR code within a MovieBook must correspond and align to a section of written text within that book. For example, if on page 10 of a MovieBook, the author has described a male character called Peter "... wearing a yellow jumper while walking his dog in a park," and a QR code is situated directly before or after this passage of written text, then that QR code, when scanned, must direct the reader to a URL that hosts video footage of the character described (Peter), wearing a yellow jumper while walking his dog in a park.
To be recognized as a "MovieBook", a manuscript, novel or any written body of work must first be submitted to the MovieBook webpage, whereby it will be analysed and examined to ensure that all elements of the written text and video footage linked to the QR codes present in the book meet the MovieBook criteria. The examination of each submission will carefully compare the actualities of each filmed scene submitted with the original text in the written body of work submitted. Comparisons of submitted footage and written text include but are not limited to events, characters, storyline, setting, location, dialogue, and action present in both the video footage linked to the QR codes in the book and the written text. MovieBooks must additionally adhere to guidelines governing the total run time of video footage in the book, word count, and other regulations.
The term "MovieBook" was registered with the [[Intellectual Property Office (IPO)]] under trademark number UK00003934138 on 15th July 2023 under the Trade Marks Act 1994 of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Created by Leon Williams and Robbie Peter, the term refers to the merging of two separate forms of entertainment (a movie and a book).
The first MovieBook, A Life Not Lived (which is set to be published in December 2023, was directed by British actor/director, Terence Maynard (The Witcher, Dream Team, Edge of Tomorrow, Reign of Fire, Revolver), and produced by the publishing house/production company - BTWN The Lines (winner of London Metropolitan University's Big Idea Challenge 2023). MovieBooks were established and created with the purpose of enhancing the reading experience by offering visually moving imagery along with literature as a way of incentivizing people to read.
According to the National Literacy Trust, statistics published on their website in September 2023 state that, 'There has been a 26% decrease in the number of children and young people aged 8 to 18 who read daily in their free time since 2005' and that in 2023, 'fewer than 3 in 10 (28.0%) children and young people aged 8 to 18 said that they read daily in 2023.'
To create a MovieBook, it is likely that not only an author will be required to write the book, but also some form of film crew will be required, whether small, medium, large, experienced, or amateur. However, since these kinds of books remain a relatively new concept, there is limited information regarding the processes involved in creating a MovieBook, its benefits, drawbacks, costs, sales potential, popularity, and how well they have been received by readers.
