NEEDS PROTECTIONS

SOMEONE IS VANDALZING!-DANO- (talk) 18:55, 6 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

He is an infielder, both according to MLB.com, our source for these matters, and reality. If you play in the field, then that is your position. A DH is someone who never plays in the field. – Muboshgu (talk) 16:28, 26 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You obviously do not understand baseball so leave the baseball pages to people who understand the sport. Check out previous seasons of American League teams at baseballrefence.com. The player that starts the most at any position is classified as the starter at that position. Dunn played first base sometimes last season but is still listed as the DH. Therefore Dunn is seen as the DH of the team. Carthage44 (talk) 23:03, 26 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Please watch your tone. Be civil. Dunn plays first base, therefore he is a first baseman. We don't use Baseball Reference for these templates, we use MLB.com, which is the link provided in the template. – Muboshgu (talk) 01:33, 27 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Dunn is the DH check today's box score. Check yesterdays box score. I have seen every White Sox game this season and Dunn have been the DH about 75% of the time therefore making him the DH. He played left field for one game this season when they played the Cubs at Wrigley Field so should we put him in the outfield part of the template? I don't think so. You put him in the part of the template where he plays the most WHICH IS DH! Carthage44 (talk) 01:42, 27 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
He appears to be being used mostly as a DH this year. He has played 29 games as a DH and just 16 as a first baseman and twice as an outfielder. Kinston eagle (talk) 01:53, 27 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
So that would make him a first baseman who is often assigned to DH. Again, it's not about where he's positioned most, it's about what MLB.com lists. – Muboshgu (talk) 02:05, 27 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
WHAT? So he plays 75% of the games as the teams DH so that makes him a first baseman? Again, you should stick to whatever it is that you update and stay away from the baseball pages because you have no idea what you are talking about. Paul Konerko is the teams starting first baseman so since you can not have two starting first baseman, that makes Dunn the DH! Carthage44 (talk) 02:17, 27 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The MLB.com page is a career summary. Our info should reflect how he is currently being used - which is DH. I would have no objection to his position being DH/1B since he has had some significant time at that position as well, but if we are only placing him under one position, his current position is DH. Kinston eagle (talk) 02:22, 27 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If MLB.com is calling Dunn an infielder, that is the most official viewpoint we will get on this subject. And before anyone questions Muboshgu's knowlege of baseball, perhaps they should take a quick look at his user page. AutomaticStrikeout (talk) 22:25, 30 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I would simply place him under where he plays a clear majority of his games. In this case, this is DH, so that's where he should go. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 03:01, 27 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't consider DH to be an actual position. I'd only list someone as the DH if they dont play any positions in the field.Spanneraol (talk) 14:35, 27 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That is your opinion that a DH is not an actual position but in the American League the DH is a actual position. Therefore the player on each team that has the most starts at DH is the DH. In this case, Dunn is the DH of the Chicago White Sox. Carthage44 (talk) 17:44, 27 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Dunn is a first baseman. Spanneraol (talk) 18:16, 27 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
WRONG!!! He used to be a first baseman. He is currently a DH which should be in both leagues but that is another discussion for another day. Carthage44 (talk) 21:16, 27 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I would caution against using the "majority" rule. Do we really want to manage verifying this as Michael Young or Jesus Montero fluctuate with playing more or less than 50% of their games as DH? No. It would be helpful to know what defensive position a DH could play, and in Dunn's case it's more than just some position he might only play in interleague play. Note that team rosters like {{Texas_Rangers_roster}} list DH as "None specified", to reflect what is on MLB.com, which is the source all these templates link to as a reference. Per ease of verifiability, consistency with other templates, and CWS listing him as an infielder (unlike Boston lsting Ortiz as a DH), Dunn should be an infielder.—Bagumba (talk) 23:39, 29 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I would agree that majority rules and in this case Dunn is a DH. He only plays first base maybe once a week. He was can to Chicago to be the DH and that is what position he plays. Carthage44 (talk) 06:23, 30 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Carthage44. Your position that he is a DH a majority of the time was already noted. You do not need to repeat it in the future. However, feel free to present new ideas to help build consensusBagumba (talk) 16:33, 30 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Quite simply, we should list him however the Chicago White Sox official site lists him, which seems to be as an infielder. To do anything else would be WP:SYNTHESIS. That said, if there isn't some way to note in these templates that someone frequently plays as a DH, there should be, because it would enable the best solution: list him as an infielder, note that he is frequently a DH. - Jorgath (talk) (contribs) 20:26, 30 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think I can buy the argument that we should list whichever defensive position he would likely play if he should ever be used for defensive purposes, as that often times is a decision made by the manager based upon a whole host of things. If he's listed as a 1B on the White Sox roster and under the section of "Infielder" [1], then there you have it. He may very well be the DH in the batting order but he would still need to have a defensive position listed, so why not go with 1B? I would also add we don't use a person's first-hand experience when deciding what to go with in article. We go with verifiable sources and consensus-building whenever there are cracks. A brand new user who may never have seen Adam Dunn play a game can contribute just as much as Dunn's neighbor, high school coach or fan who's never missed a game of his while on on his latest team. Zepppep (talk) 02:26, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. The whole point of following MLB.com is that there's no synthesis or interpretation. MLB.com says he's an infielder, so he's an infielder. – Muboshgu (talk) 04:28, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Baseball-reference.com lists him as a LF/1B not DH. IMO, going into gamelogs to justify another position is original research and reporting based on recentism.—Bagumba (talk) 16:00, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
According to the depth chart (which is also linked from the roster template), he is #1 on the depth chart as a DH. It's a mlb.com resource (that conflicts with itself from the roster page). In this case I think we should go with what makes sense, which is that he's primarily a DH. — X96lee15 (talk) 17:06, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
By that logic, though, Raul Ibanez would be the Yankees' DH, even though he's played 58 games in the OF and 15 at DH. Granted I hope he doesn't play OF again once Swisher is back in the lineup, but my point is that he's clearly an OF who DH's from time to time. – Muboshgu (talk) 19:06, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The name of this template is "roster", not "depth chart". We can change if there is consensus, but a true depth chart should break down by specific position and not generic IF/OF as is the current template format. —Bagumba (talk) 19:25, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

The links to the White Sox roster, coaches, nri's, and transactions on their MLB.com website need to be fixed. Whenever you click on one of them it says that there is an error. Sportsfan2004 (talk) 13:01, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Roster change.

[edit]

Should we change their roster from the spring training to the regular season roster or wait for the Hendriks status and whether or not Colas will be on the opening day roster? The opening day game for this team is tomorrow. Chicagosports2004 (talk) 17:20, 29 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Changes should only be made to reflect official changes made by the team. – Muboshgu (talk) 17:36, 29 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If we do make those changes, should we put Hendriks on personal leave since he's currently fighting cancer?Chicagosports2004 (talk) 17:59, 29 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The template should reflect https://www.mlb.com/whitesox/roster/40-man. When the White Sox make a move, we can reflect it. – Muboshgu (talk) 18:43, 29 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
