how common is this?

[edit]

I have never seen it. Is the practice waning/waxing?

~~Very common, every orthodox Jewish male 13 and up has at least one set.Saxophonemn (talk) 11:47, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Totafot(h)

[edit]

Totafoth is not the same as tefillin. The tefillin are both the tefillin shel rosh (head) and the tefillin shel yad (hand/arm in biblical Hebrew). Totafoth is an ancient word of Anatolian origin. According to Rashi, totafot(h) means literally two-two, referring to the four compartments in the tefillin shel rosh. Reference: Vers 8 here: https://www.chabad.org/dailystudy/torahreading.asp?tdate=7/31/2020 SaksischRos (talk) 19:01, 28 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Edited accordingly. Ar2332 (talk) 04:55, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

phylacteries

[edit]

I've never heard anyone, ever, calling Tefillin "phylacteries". 139.138.6.121 (talk) 21:38, 19 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Well that's what they're referred to everywhere in English when not calling them Tefillin. Saxophonemn (talk) 11:48, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Biblical source section

[edit]

"The obligation of tefillin is mentioned four times in the Torah:"

This doesn't sound right in wikivoice, IMO it's a statement of faith, and the lead says The biblical verses often cited as referring to tefillin are obscure. Also, per WP:RSPSCRIPTURE, some brilliant secondary sourcing would be good.

My suggestion is something like "The practice of wearing tefillin is based on these four verses..." but it should have a good non-primary source. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:16, 26 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Except that the Tefillin contain the 4 passages that mention Tefillin. A secondary source would be the Kabalistic declaration that mentions the 4 passages as well. Saxophonemn (talk) 11:49, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Customs

[edit]

Hi all, I would like to start to due a library of the various customs, it looks like there could be many, from knots, winding directions, hand wrapping, etc. Saxophonemn (talk) 11:50, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
