Name Origin

[edit]

Article summary contradicts "Name" section of article.

Summary says "Though not named by Mendaña, it is believed that the islands were called "the Solomons" by those...". While the "Name" section says Mendaña did name it. Prime624 (talk) 05:54, 22 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You are right, Prime624! This has been corrected. Ex nihil (talk) 13:43, 23 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Isatabu

[edit]

The ancient native name of "Solomon Islands", should be mentioned in this article. 43.242.178.172 (talk) 12:34, 15 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

There was no 'ancient native name' for Solomon Islands, either for the archipelago or the current nation state. There was no concept of the Solomon Islands as a cultural entity, the islands were sometimes at war with each other, or unknown to each other. Isatabu refers only to Guadalcanal and is already included in that page. Ex nihil (talk) 14:49, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"The"

[edit]

The "Name" section of the article says the definite article, "the", has not been part of the country's official name since independence. However, the most recent revision by Mandsford added the word "the" to the beginning of the article. Should this be reverted? Donotforgetmycode (talk) 14:57, 6 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Is this the way the country is talked about domestically? In New Zealand I only ever hear “the Solomon Islands”, in the same manner as “the Netherlands”, and dropping ‘the’ would be very unnatural to me. — HTGS (talk) 08:35, 8 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ottoman Turks

[edit]

Did the Ottoman Turks ever send a fleet to the Solomon Islands (or Isatabu) during or after the "American Revolutionary War"?
