Suspenders?

[edit]

As skinheads are a British phenomena, I have changed "suspenders" to "braces". Suspenders are what women use to hold up their stockings in the UK.

Edit request: image

[edit]

Now this isn't even a protected article, but I'm old and I've been trying for ten minutes to do this edit myself so if anyone could 1. if my edit is a good idea, tell me how to do it (or even do it for me, it's up to you) or 2. if my edit is dumb, tell me as such, either would be appreciated! Thank you

The current main image of the article is of two Portugese skinhead lasses. I say that's okay as a main image, but it should be *one of* the main images, because the main thing about skinheads is their... skin heads. Their short hair. And they are mostly men. And they don't wear whatever these lasses are wearing. And though they may have spread worldwide they started as, are and have always principally been: an English subculture. Not a Portuguese one!

The main image of the article used to be an image of the band the 4-Skins (nothing funny about the name) and I think said image represents the subculture, the fashion, and the musical aspects of it all in one perfectly. A few months ago it was moved to the Music section with no replacement. My request is put simply to move the image back up to the lead of the article, or alternatively to add an even better image if anybody has one.

Thank you! 2A02:C7E:2F68:AC00:DC3B:67F4:1D10:DE84 (talk) 23:17, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know who did it, but the band pic is not really very good, maybe one skin among them? And tbf, the current pic does show that (a) not all skins were male and (b) not all were fascists.
All the skins images we have (surprise surprise, there's not a lot of copyleft stuff out there) are to be seen at Wikimedia Commons, follow this link:
and suggest which one you think might be better. Just copy the url from the top of your browser window. --𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 23:39, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much! I appreciate that the article is specific about distinguishing between white power and original skinheads, and it is great to have a photo of female or non-English skins too like the one that is there already since skins spread worldwide. I still think the 4-Skins photo is the best personally but that's completely subjective of course. I'm going to be biased towards the older photos but my two suggestions (thank you very much for linking it) are, and I hope I'm doing this right:
Skinheads in London (1981)
Fairly classic skinheads as I remember them, though this is already the image for "Trojan skinhead" - don't know if that makes it better or worse to be used? Can you reuse photos?
Leeds skinheads (2012)
I would think it'd be best to use a photo from the peak of the subculture from 1960s-80s or so, but here's a modern English one anyhow
I lean towards the first one, on second thought maybe even more than the 4-Skins photo.
Again it's still up to you, these are just my suggestions, it's very kind of you to help. 2A02:C7E:2F68:AC00:DC3B:67F4:1D10:DE84 (talk) 00:17, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
(I have "Wiki-ised" the raw URLs, as agreed.)
Well it is not up to me to decide as we work by consensus. Personally I prefer the current image. So let's leave it a few weeks for others to pitch in. But I'd be happy with the Leeds one, as it has Docs as a bonus! --𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 11:05, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I mean, to get the blokey middle of the internet bell curve, there's always an image search. The current image is interesting! And not particularly male gaze-y – also a plus. Aingotno (talk) 23:17, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
